Last time I came here I had the Athena Gyro, the first bite reminded me immediately of eating one true to life in Athens a few years ago. Somehow Xenia out does the birthplace of the dish itself in a humble corner of the Harrisonburg shopping center. I came back to ensure that I was right about this place, and I'm delighted to say I was. I also promised to leave a review but had devoured my Athena Gyro so quickly last time that I didn't have the presence of mind to take a picture.
I wanted to grab an appetizer first and chose the falafel. It comes as warm and crisp little disks of potent herbed flavor topped with clearly home made hummus.
The star of the show was the Shawarma, this power packed pita is so insanely good at a great price. The pita is pillowy and warm, holding a generous portion of golden chicken shawarma, cool house made taziki sauce, crispy diced cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, and lettuce. The depth of flavor is so rich and is so satisfying that it's hard to imagine that there is the rest of the menu with it's untold treasure of appetizing flavors to be discovered.
The worst part of Xenia is that eventually you'll finish your meal. I cannot wait to come back and try their...
Read moreThis place has amazing reviews, so I’m sure I just had a bad experience and that the restaurant is normally great. I stopped by at 8:40 pm, which was 20 mins before the restaurant closed so this could’ve ultimately been my fault for choosing to get takeout 20 mins before closing time. I got a lamb kabob which was one of the worst cuts of lamb I’ve ever had. The meat smelled bad, had pieces of chicken thrown in my dish, even though I ordered lamb, and also, there were random pieces of noodles that came with my rice. This was clearly a last minute attempt to serve a meal, which again, I take responsibility for, but restaurants know customers walk in 20-30 mins before close especially since it’s a Saturday night. I would have not chosen this location if we were dining in as it would be rude to the staff, but I didn’t think takeout would be an issue. The chickpeas I got were also bad. They were soup like which I am used to but the soup part tasted like straight dirty water. Anyway, I recommend not going to this restaurant even a hour before closing. Very disappointed with my experience. The reason that I wanted to give two stars instead of one was because the...
Read moreMy husband and I tried to eat here the other night. When we walked in there were un-bussed tables and no staff in the front of the restaurant. There were a couple people sitting and eating and the food did look good. There was a woman in front of us at the counter presumably wanting to submit a to go order. Finally after 5 minutes a gentleman peeked out from the back and told her someone would be right out. We went ahead and grabbed our own menus and seated ourselves. At least 10 minutes went by and nothing - and the poor woman was still standing at the counter waiting. One guy did emerge to serve a person their food and again said "I'll be right with you" but that never happened. You could hear a few staff in the kitchen working but talking at full volume about their personal lives. Finally we left and went somewhere else. We really wanted to patronize this small Kurdish restaurant but it just got too painful. Might try again someday - looks like they are normally pretty good but we must have caught them...
