First time patrons. No inside seating was available at the time we came. So we were seated outside. It was 31°!! Heaters were hanging from the ceiling just high enough to barely feel the warmth. Better than none right?! Lol. Anyway, our waitress was pleasant and attentive. She took our drink and appetizer orders promptly. After entering them in the system she returned to get our dinner orders. The cheese appetizer was alright. Not what we expected but we ate it! We ordered a cheeseburger with fries and catfish dinner that comes with hush puppies and fries for the kids. The cheeseburger was charbroiled. It had good flavor and the ground beef was moist. The catfish was crispy, good fries. Be advised the hush puppies have whole kernel corn in them. They would have been really good except every single one of them was raw in the middle. The batter needs to be a little more dry so it cooks all the way through. It's too wet which causes it to look done on the outside (color) but still uncooked in the center. My adult daughter had the filet with asparagus and baked sweet potato. The steak was cooked perfectly. It had excellent flavor and was tender. I had the Cajun shrimp with Mac and cheese. I understand it's a Cajun inspired dish so a little heat is expected. But I think the cook was a little heavy handed with the spice. Way too spicy. And the shrimp would of had a better texture and flavor with a nice sear on them. They tasted like they were cooked with the pasta. Too wet and squishy. The pasta sauce was dry and barely covered the pasta. It was not creamy at all and honestly couldn't even tell you if it was made from scratch like the menu claimed. It was supposed to be made from Gouda cheese. I didn't pick up the flavor at all. The Cajun seasoning overpowered the whole dish. I think it sat under a warming light too long also. Maybe why it was dry. I still ate all of it because it was $25. My dish did come with a really nice side salad. Some of the best Bleu cheese salad dressing I've had in quite a while. We also we're pretty excited to order bison chili. But sadly we were told right before our entrees arrived that the kitchen was out of it. Bummer! We got some peach cobbler to go. It was alright. Truthfully I don't think it was worth $9 but I'll try anything once at least. Oh! And be prepared for messy floors. They must have been really busy earlier in the evening before we arrived for dinner. The bus boys were really dedicated to cleaning off the tables in a timely manner and I'm sure they cleaned it as soon as they could. Just a fair warning if you're a clean freak. All in all I'd say our experience was good...
Read moreSharing only because I felt like my experience with this restaurant wasn’t the best however I will say our waitress was NOT the problem and by all accounts was doing the best she could with what she was dealt. I will also say that it was the only restaurant in town that was open today and I did take this into consideration. I came in to eat with my husband and kiddos tonight while passing through Helen, we absolutely love the town and come often but usually go to Hofbrauhaus to eat however because of the snow storm Cowboys and Angels was the only place open. I ordered the Maverick Fried Chicken sandwich, my husband had a burger and my kids had chicken tenders… When my plate came out it was already messed up because I had asked for no cheese and cheese was most definitely on it and melted over top so I had to send it back. When they brought it back I could tell the kitchen had just peeled it off because there were still chunks of the cheese on it but iat this point I was hungry (I am pregnant for reference and this was my first meal of the day due to food aversions) so I go to put the bun on top of my chicken which was face down on the plate and sure enough it has three spots of green mold on the bun. Immediately my appetite was gone, and at this point I was just sick. I mentioned it to the waitress who immediately tried to take it to her manager and I’m not really sure what happened after that. I never received a detailed copy of my receipt and the manager never even came to our table to speak or apologize to us. With the weather how it is and previously working in food service I STILL left a generous tip however I feel like the whole situation should’ve been handled differently especially since when my daughter got done with her plate I notice there were two red short hairs on her plate (she has long brown hair) I didn’t even mention this at this point because we had already paid and I was just ready to go home. Definitely won’t be recommending this to anyone which is very sad because we come to Helen GA a lot. I’m not sure what the managers name was because we never even got that but she was working the bar I think. After leaving I wish I could’ve asked for a refund for my daughter plate but she ate it not realizing the hair were there so I wasn’t going to throw fire on this problem but the manager definitely needs to figure out what to do in these situations because ignoring the problem isn’t very...
Read moreA meal for four cost about $100. For the meal, the price was fair. The staff is friendly, the atmosphere is nice, and the facility is clean. I might recommend a more proactive approach to guiding guests through the renovations in progress.
We opened with the Reuben Egg Rolls. I was a little concerned about the effect that deepfrying would have on the ingredients of a Reuben, but I was wrong. The result was interesting and delicious.
We ordered a Cowboy Ribeye, and they brought out a 24 oz monster! It was beautiful and the grill work was very nice. The seasoning needs some work, but it was well worth the price and very satisfying. The sides were a Gouda Mac & Cheese and Collard Greens. The Mac & Cheese was good; I think the roux needed to be cooked more or needed more fat. The flour was not incorporated into the final product enough.
The Collard Greens deserve special mention. Not only would I not change a thing about their collards, I want the recipe. If I order collards in the Georgia hills, this is what I want. Outstanding. Well seasoned and beautifully cooked.
The burgers were a wreck. We ordered medium rare, medium, and medium well. All three were medium well, under seasoned and too dry. The buns were burnt and even though the back of house proved they know cheese with the swiss in the Egg rolls, the cheddar was a greasy flap and the Bleu cheese was either low quality or handled in a way that left it slimy and bland. Most disappointing was the way the burger patty it self was already broken and fell from the bun when I peeked under the lettuce. While I'm thinking of it, I would recommend placing the lettuce under the patty when it is served; it will stop the bottom bun from getting so soggy. Those burger needed a lot more tlc to live up to the quality of everything else in the place.
Finally, the fries. They are great. They go the extra length to make a fry that is unique, golden, crisp, and delicious. In the end, if I had only ordered the fries, collards and appetizer, I would issue five stars. The lackluster (but decent) steak and Mac & Cheese don't move me too far from that, but the burgers were rough.
I will try them again. What was right was right enough to get me back...
