We love history and wanted to know how Helen, GA came to be a German town. We thought there would be a creative story of German families. Nope! We learned, the township, in 1969 wanted to win a contest!!!! They designed roofs so the plain concrete buildings were more true to the look of Germany, and the people dressed in costumes, winning that contest. I have to say, we were disappointed! Read moreFull disclosure, I am a volunteer and an artist here. This is a great group of people, very friendly and welcoming. Prices for art are very reasonable. Half of the building is the Helen Historical Museum which explains what Helen used to be and has information about the annual Hot Air Balloon Race. The other half is a gallery and gift shop with local artists. The gallery and museum both change their displays several times a year to reflect current events. We were greeted immediately by the friendly team that works there, learned about the history of Helen, and then hit up the Gift Shop which was the highlight for me.
