Second Visit as Charming as the First!
Our second trip to Helen, Georgia, was just as delightful as our first, solidifying this Bavarian-inspired mountain town as a must-visit destination. Nestled in the North Georgia mountains, Helen’s Alpine charm, unique shops, and authentic German cuisine make it a perfect getaway.
The shops in Helen are a highlight, offering a mix of quirky, locally-owned boutiques and German-themed stores. We loved strolling down Main Street, popping into places like the Hansel & Gretel Candy Kitchen for their delectable fudge and chocolates, which never fail to impress. The gift shops, like Wildewood Gallery, are packed with unique souvenirs, from handcrafted ornaments to Bavarian cuckoo clocks. We also enjoyed browsing the Christmas Shop, a year-round festive wonderland that’s hard to resist, even in September. Each store has its own character, and the friendly shopkeepers make the experience feel personal and welcoming.
The real star of Helen, though, is the food. The town’s authentic German restaurants transport you straight to Bavaria. On this visit, we dined at Hofbrauhaus Restaurant, where the schnitzel was perfectly crispy, and the sauerbraten melted in our mouths, paired with a hearty Black Forest cake for dessert. We also revisited Hofer’s of Helen for their warm, fresh-baked pretzels and bratwurst, washed down with a crisp German beer. Every dish feels like a celebration of German heritage, with generous portions and flavors that hit all the right spots.
Helen’s charm lies in its ability to feel both familiar and fresh, even on a second visit. The shops are a treasure trove of unique finds, and the German food is as authentic and satisfying as it gets. We’re already looking forward to our third trip to...
Read moreEvery year there's something new up in Helen! Gorgeous photo op. The flowers are so beautiful and of course, you can lock in your love by adding your own lock to the heart- shaped lockwall in the center of town. There's a lot of picture taking and kissy- kissy going on in front of this wall. Downtown Helen is both nostalgic and overrun with interesting shops. Just go in and out of each one of the shops and you will see so many cool items. Candy makers, cookoo clocks, beer steins, all kinds of jewelry, tee shirts, hats, hiking gear... Or just sit out and enjoy the fresh air. Maybe listen to the music... Maybe plop down on one of the many benches while you eat some candy or ice cream and do some people watching... There's so much to see and do here in the village of Alpine Helen that you could spend the entire day just perusing the town. Be sure you explore all the nooks and crannies.. Don't be afraid to skirt down and around, be brave seek and you will find those hidden gems. I called them back-o-beyond alleyway shops, up-the- stairs shops, down the stairs hideaway shops..oh it's an adventure. Want a steak? Want some hearty German food? Baked goods, funnel cakes, icey cold lemonade? Or maybe a frozen Marguerita? How about an espresso or some Gelato? Helen has it all.. As I said, its like shopping mania. And definitely, it has a huge impressive selection of German beer at ever turn. I mean German beer for days at the outdoor bar, at the indoor bars, and at Betty's Country Store down the way... If you like beer, this...
Read moreNot what expected. Some German style architecture. All stores except one for clocks and original German handmade wooden toys, have regular Chinese trinkets and stupid nothings. Oh yes, there is also a glass shop, interesting but toom many things of the same type: 10 classes below any Swarowsky. Restaurants so and so. Lots of bikers. One restaurant by the river, with a terrace right next to the quick mountain river, was great.
As service, everywhere excellent. Fast waiters, all efficient. Visitor Center outstanding, nice, helpful, professional, super ku d useful associates.
The river is great and a beauty, yet the bridge is crossed continuously by construction trucks, big busses, noisy.
The city is sort of dirtish, and not accommodating. A million of stores, yes, but the same and same useless things everywhere.
Some culture of natural leather objects, vyes, may be art, but I am so much against animal slottering.
All together, thank you all working there for their hard work and benevolence, I am glad I have visited. But once per...
