Today I am going to talk about a disturbing experience to help spread awareness. On Wednesday night my fiancé and I decided to go out, and ended up walking into the Black Rose Public House. Upon entering we were immediately met with hostility because of Dexter, my service dog. For those of you who don't know, Dexter is a highly trained autism service dog. Before him I struggled to leave the house, was overrun with anxiety and OCD, battling an addiction to self harm and starving myself. I felt hopeless. When dexter came along, he showed me a life I never knew I could have. He saved me. And he comes with me everywhere, as most service dogs do. I was told by an employee, who I am not going to name because I'm not making this post to throw any individual under the bus, that if I didn't have paperwork I couldn't come in. I explained that under the ADA there is no paperwork. He just scoffed at me, and continued to tell me I had to leave. Getting in my face to the point that customers were uncomfortable, saying it was wrong. I was shaking. My heart felt like it was going to come out of my chest at any moment. In the end I was denied access. I was discriminated against because of my disability. And it felt terrible. But from this I want to build awareness of the true problem here: lack of understanding of the law and people faking service dogs. By going online and buying a "certification" for your pet and then saying it's a service dog does nothing but hurt people like me, who truly need these animals to function. It takes away the validity of my rights, and the rights of so many others. There is already such a huge issue with a lack of understanding of the ADA, and having people reinforcing the idea that service dogs need certification by pretending their pet is a service animal makes it even worse. I do plan on taking further action because of this event, and fighting for my rights and the rights of so many others who experience this. It's time for a change. So please, talk about this to everyone you know. Spread awareness and help be part of the change. Even though this experience disturbed me to my core, I am grateful it happened to me so that I can use it to make a difference. As individuals with disabilities we have rights, but when people step on them and we don't do anything, they aren't really rights at all. We deserve to live a life just like everyone else. One where our disabilities don't rule us. One where we don't just...
Read moreReally disappointed with what Black Rose turned into. Went there for what I thought would be a quick bite at an Irish-American Pub. When I walked in, I sat down, and waited a solid ten minutes to get a menu. When I ordered my drink, it took me ten minutes to get it. I also told the waitress my order, the Irish Whiskey Grilled Salmon. On the menu, it looked pretty appetizing, and that the fresh salmon on a plate of fresh vegetables and cherry tomatoes with garlic bread would surely compensate for the poor wait times. I gave the waitress my order. She asked (in a very rushed fashion) how I'd like it cooked. I told her blue rare. She quickly said "Well done? Okay!" and went on her way before I could correct her. So I waited. And waited. And waited. No refills for my empty sweet tea for the 45 minutes it took them to get my order to me. I wish I had a refill or two, so that way I could adequately swallow the amalgam of salty, soggy greens and a burned (a little too well done) salmon fillet, with two plain slices of a store-bought baguette with a sprig of rosemary on the two tiny slices. At the end of the nearly two hour-long ordeal, I ended up paying $18 for something I didn't even order. My advice for those considering coming here? You'd have better service at the dumpster behind the restaurant. My advice for Black Rose? Have enough waitstaff to accommodate the amount of people you have on a daily basis, and make sure the waitstaff are properly...
Read moreAte with friends during lunch time and we were served promptly. Orders were all correct. The place has a nice atmosphere and friendly service. The restaurant was noticeably VERY cold, as if no heat was on, so that actually took away from our enjoyment a bit. I didn't particularly like the fries and wouldn't order them again given the choice, because they were just meh, totally flavorless. I noticed that a friend didn't seem to want hers either. We bet the sweet potato fries would be a good alternative. I thought the classic burger was good, and especially the bun. It was fresh, cooked just right and was as good as you'd expect but not better than I expected for the price. My friends ordered bison burgers and were both pleased with their burgers. The bathrooms were definitely not in good shape at all! I was surprised that the owner had not dealt with the poor condition. I think it reflects quite poorly on the operation as a whole because if the bathroom is THAT run down what is going on in the kitchen, behind the bar etc. Just left me with an awful impression of the place. My friend absolutely loves the place and made it her first choice for our lunch, but for me it just didn't live up to the hype, the expectation and completely failed to provide an acceptable restroom for the employees and the customers. The fact that it felt like the heat wasn't on certainly didn't help. Sorry, but I think based on my first experience I wouldn't be...
