Being from a major NE city with a very significant Chinatown, I’ve grown up having some of the best Asian food around. That includes: Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Japanese and Korean. So, my experience with finding good Asian food in smaller cities hasn’t been the most positive—let alone “The Deep South”.
So one day when are large party, all gassed out on some great southern food called for a “light” eating day, I figured “let’s go Asian”. I forewarned my wife witch has the most unreasonable food standards, and the fact that she’s Asian that she would have to take one for the team. We needed to eat, and everyone was pretty much in agreement with Chinese—trade war aside.
Strike one! The name. Any restaurant with the name “Bistro” in it is almost always sure to disappoint. Strike Two! The restaurants subtitle claims it makes: Chinese, Japanese and Thai food. In my experience, like in football, if you got three Qb’s then you really have none. In other words, if you specialize in more than one type of cuisine, they’re prob all bad. Strike three! We pull up to the restaurant which looks more like an abandoned tile outlet from the 70s with reflective mirror windows. I turn to my wife with look of apology in my eyes knowing I’ll be hearing about this for years to come.
We walk in and are immediately seated. The inside looks like we stepped in to Tao on Columbus Circle in NYC. Plus they had Plum wine!!! We ordered Sushi—excellent!!! A couple Chinese staples: fried rice, lo mein, General Tsos chicken—-fantastic!!! We also ordered a Thai dish, shrimp in red curry sauce—-unbelievable!!! Everything was excellent!!! Waitstaff was awesome and the owner— she was the friendliest ever!!
.......throw the three strikes rule out, and the idea you can’t find good Asian food south of DC. This place can stand with those in NYC, Philly, or DC. Asian food in Boston? Terrible!!! Haven’t been out West but, this is NE big city Chinatown quality. Def...
Read moreHurricane Elsa swept us into the Bistro before she hit the city. After a long day at the beach, the creatures were HANGRY and started to be rude so we needed to feed our 3 Gremlins before midnight and before Elsa hit us. We were looking for Chinese buffet but Google gave me fake news. It was raining and the Gremlins needed to get fed so we parked and entered. First be aware it's a hidden place that is surrounded by other restaurants. Also the parking is limited and tight so if you have a new or expensive SUV don't park there you'll get a Door Tattoo. You need to be seated and it is a small venue that if you have a large family like us seating is a challenge. When we sat our drink orders were taken and we were given complimentary dry noodles with sweet dipping sauce. Our server took her time to take the order, which happened all evening, and was gone only to be seen 3 more times. The kids ordered orange chicken, wife had house noodles and I had the eggplant in garlic sauce. The boys went to wash their hands and the restroom along with the restaurant look was A+. The orange chicken was a large portion with broccoli. The noodles had pork, shrimp and chicken but not as large as the orange chicken. The eggplant was served in a fancy bowl ( look at picture) with a flame underneath. The garlic flavor was well balanced with the brown sauce. We all had to share the bowl of rice but we did ask for more and it was provided. Our server came back and knew she had not paid attention to us and provided us with ice cream. The gesture was appreciated. I feel for $67 plus tip the service and portions needed to be better. It wasn't bad but I'd look for a less expensive place if you have...
Read moreWent for dinner on a Monday evening with a party of six. Quite a few places are closed on Monday in Hilton Head so this was an unplanned Asian dinner which turned out to be quite enjoyable. First of all the atmosphere was very nice inside, which was a nice surprise given the strip mall location. Our server was very attentive and everything came to our table promptly in spite of the restaurant being relatively busy. The menu ran the gamut with Sushi, Thai and Chinese choices.
Nobody in our group tried the Sushi or Thai options, all opting for Chinese. We had three different chicken dishes, the Sesame, Orange and General Tsaos, which were all very good.
The menu choices were pretty standard as well as some more authentic type of options if you wanted to be more adventurous. We also had the crab Rangoon and spring roll appetizers, which were also very good. Prices were very reasonable for the portion size and the area.
I just ate Chinese food in Chinatown in Chicago a couple of weeks ago and I won’t say this was as authentic, but I will tell you Asian Bistro was a highly satisfying meal for our...
