Island Country Markets — Local services in Honolulu

I’ve been familiar with this location of Island Country Markets since it opened at the Old Wailana Coffee House (there are locations at the Ritz Carlton in Waikiki, in Kapolei across from Aulani, and on Kauai at Coconut Marketplace). All are owned by ABC Stores, and you’ll find that they offer the same type of merchandise as the regular stores.

All of ICMs have great plate specials, and the prime rib is as good as most restaurants! The deli and management team at this location is one of their best, they’re always innovating with new foodie items.

When a Yelp group I was helping wanted a catering option, I immediately thought of this location. Not only do they have a wide menu of affordable options, the team from the store manager on down provides excellent customer service.

We provided our order of 45 meals a week ahead of pickup day, which turned out to be seamless. They boxed the orders according to each type, and one of the staff put the boxes on a cart and wheeled it out for me to my car.

Everyone at my event loved the food (which was still warm at pickup!) and asked where we had catered it from. Their satisfaction with the meals and the event overall helped make our event a success, which raised enough money to help provide Thanksgiving meals for five needy families.

I work security here, and let me tell you — this isn’t just another ABC Store. Island Country Market has the BEST ABC Store (#205) hands down.

First off, the deli. The cooks and employees in the back move fast, coordinated, and are constantly pumping out delicious food. We’re talking garlic shrimp, steak, pizzas, gyoza, spaghetti, even sushi — and it all hits.

Then there’s the coffee bar. The staff there are always cracking jokes, making you laugh while they carefully craft your drink exactly how you like it. Ultra-customized, done right every time.

And don’t leave without trying the gelato — it’s a must before you go.

The store itself has everything: from eggs and cheese to batteries and toothbrushes. Lost? Just ask any employee and they’ll gladly help. Need extra assistance? The managers go above and beyond to make sure customers leave satisfied — I’ve seen it countless times with my own eyes. Overall:

This spot is a gem....

I bought a pint of ice cream here (among other things like drinks and some snacks). The texture at first seemed a little off. But by the time I'd gotten to the bottom, it had become clear that it had previously been allowed to melt partially, that the ingredients had consequently separated, and that it had been re-frozen after that had happened. I would not buy ice cream from their freezer case again.

Also, the prices generally aren't any better than at the Food Pantry grocery store just around the corner at Eaton Square, and in many cases are even worse. When I heard this was going to be opening, I was hopeful that it might generate some competition between the two stores that would benefit those who actually live in the neighborhood, but it doesn't look like that's going to be the case.
