Okay, I didn’t take a picture of my shave ice because I was sooooo distracted with how good it was. Having been on the Island for only 5 days, I managed to try as many different shave-ice spots, and I have learned some things!! Island Vintage Shave Ice always has a line, and took longer to make than any of the other spots (hence their long line, but I mean I waited 40 minutes on Christmas night) There is a reason for this line which I’ll explain. All of the OTHER shave-Ice spots I went to gave a spoon and a straw. Island Vintage does NOT give a straw. Why? Because Island Vintage Ice makers take a long time to meticulously pack the ice TIGHTLY! I was annoyed when I was waiting, but when I got mine, it was AMAZING. Their syrups are unparalleled. Mango has REAL mango in it, a lot of real mango, for instance. What does the hard packed shaved ice mean? It means that the thick, amazing syrups that they pour onto the ice will not permeate into the center. But, don’t I want it to permeate?? NO!! You want it to permeate in about 1/4 to 1/2 way, then stop. Why?? Because the flavor stays concentrated that way! You can spoon into the ice and blend the outer flavors with the inner ice, and THAT makes ALL off the difference. They have pack the ice TIGHT so it stays cold and fluffy the whole time!! You get even flavor with each spoonful and there is MORE ice in their ices because of the tight packing! THAT’S why you don’t need a straw!!! I found that all of the other spots that offered straws used less ice, packed it looser, causing the inner ice to melt almost immediately, which made all of the flavors mix together into one kind of blah flavor drink, rather than a shave ice. The mochi at Island Vintage was the best I had as well. Believe me, I am addicted to these things, but I can say without a shadow of a doubt that out of the five different shave ice spots I tried (including one on the North Shore) this was the best by a landslide.
