Some friends and I decided that we would step away from our normal bars to check out 77 Degrees on Friday 4/5/19. When I initially got there, I was wowed by the potential this place had. From outside the establishment, the lights really wowed me. Unfortunately as I was about to walk up the stairs, I was told by the bouncer that I could not get in because I had on "athletic tennis shoes", and that everything else I had on was fine (mind you my shoes were $230, but not the one to price drop; however, it's valid in this review). Being that I have dealt with this type of discrimination in Atlanta's Buckhead bars, I was no stranger to the reasoning for me to get in, but after Ubering back to my apartment to change into some $50 converse, and Ubering back to 77 degrees, I was able to gain access to the establishment. This was not before the bouncer then told me to "tuck my lanyard (key chain) into my pockets. Frustrated with the pickiness of the bouncer, I said, "Ok."
After getting inside, I was determined to still give 77 another chance. The lights and ambiance was spectacular. It almost seemed like I was going to a very nice place where everyone dressed the part...I was wrong. Most people had on attire that was appropriate for this rooftop bar; however, there were several people dressed in casual shorts, t-shirts, TOMS, Brooks TENNIS SHOES, and New Balance TENNIS SHOES that looked like orthopedic shoes. Not ragging on peoples' attire; however, it needs to be listed out here because I could let a lot of thing slide, but to prohibit me into the establishment based off of my shoes, but allow this is unacceptable. The main people I noticed getting turned away were my fellow POC (People of Color) who were more appropriately dressed than the men I saw inside.
The service for getting beverages was ok; however, the drinks were not strong at all. My titos and sprite might as well been a full glass of soda.
Overall, I would like to give it another chance, but after things get better,...
Read moreSo I have been to several bars/clubs etc in Houston and around the states and I understand that most establishments do have dress codes. I try to respect that because I know how vital it is to the success of a business like this. Today I called before coming to 77 degrees because I was concerned about putting on shorts. I was told my shorts were okay as long as they are not athletic. But when I got to the door at 11pm, I was denied entry. I have no problem with denying me entry because of my attire. However, I do have a problem when the same rules and standards are not enforced for everyone. Just for the 20 to 30 mins that I was out front waiting on my car from valet, I saw people who are white get in with shorts and tennis shoes without being stopped. People who were even more casual in their attire than myself. And they got in at midnight.
I was discriminated against. I don't think I would get the same treatment if I were white or if they knew I was going to spend $1000 that night. I expected better from 77 degrees but I was wrong. I think they are the same as the typical American bar that would treat you differently because of the color of your skin or socioeconomic status. Would allow you break the rules as long as you are white and wealthy.
I'm never going back and I hope other POC and people who care about equality take note of this and choose locations that will be more welcoming and...
Read moreWow, this place is stunning! We decided to start early here for a friend's birthday coming from the Clear Lake side of town. Upon arriving in Midtown to park, my friends and I were in awe of the beautiful lights of 77 Degrees. We arrived early about 8 or so and found a lovely spot to sit in the 2nd level. The white decor and couches are beautiful. Love the swings. Great photo ops! Our server Angie was a sweetheart and offered us all a round of complimentary shots for my friend's birthday. We all tried a few cocktails. My personal favorite was the Grape Expectations. I love the fresh ingredients. It was a gorgeous evening for a rooftop bar and this place was just perfect!
We stopped by a few other nearby bars after and when we walked by 77 Degrees around 11 or so the line was already wrapped around the block. I would love to check it out again later in the night. It looked completely packed and I can see why. It deserves the hype!
My only suggestion would be to add a happy hour drink/food menu soon. I can't wait...
