El Bolillo — Restaurant in Houston

I always picture coming in to buy just a few pastries and breads and end up leaving with at least two filled bags full of goodies. But still spent less than $20 today so that is pretty good self-control. Lol

Everything tastes delicious here. It really just depends on what your preferences are in terms of flavor and texture but so far everything I've bought is well made. The following are just a few comments on a few things we bought today since I'm a bit bored waiting for something.

The empanadas are yummy with fillings that are not overwhelmingly sweet - we usually get pumpkin and sweet potato. The sweet potato fillings are sweeter than the pumpkin ones so choose your poison. I only took a star away because we bought 6 empanadas. They were packed weird so 2 were broken when we got home. This is weird incident since the people who pack the breads and pastries are usually like magicians - despite stuffing them in bags, everything comes out perfect.

I love the muffins. They are soft but hardy and at just the perfect sweetness to make you want to keep eating and munching and snacking. Be careful as they look and taste innocuous but are addicting. I just found a muffin or cupcake here today that they cut a slit into and filled the slit with cream and decorated with two raisins. The whole thing is then covered with sugar. I'm not sure if it's supposed to look like an abstract monster but it is delicious. If I wasn't a mother, I would have inhaled the whole thing. As is, the bigger half is wrapped up and stowed out of sight so I can share it with my daughter when she wakes up. Regrets for only buying one.

I am not a lover of a panaderia cookie. The flavor is good but the texture is just not my preference. Don't get me wrong, the cookies here are of a better quality and taste than any grocery store or packaged cookies but I'm the type to choose a processed and packaged cookie if the texture is just right. It's a comfort thing. Daughter loves the cookies here so she would highly recommend them.

We also got a churro today. It's very tasty with the cinnamon sugar and caramel filling. For novices, only buy what you can eat on the same day. Old churros turn into a rock and if you try to reheat it, you get an oily but slightly more pliable rock stick.

Let me start off by saying this bakery has good baked goods . I have no issues with the sweets they have there . I would give 5 stars for that . However my last two experiences there have been a pain . Last time I went I was in line and I did not have a big tray with sweets since I was only there to get some tres Leche cake which you buy at the register, so the last time the cashier thought I was with the family in front of me and then I informed her I was next . She said sorry and I was like hey it’s okay no worries . Then today I went and the same thing happened . There was the cashier which I had no issues with , then their was an older lady bagging people’s sweets telling the cashier how much to charge them . The bagger skipped me which I was not supposed . I then told her excuse me I am next . She looks at me and acted like she did no hear me . I then told her two more times I was next . She says nothing to me and I then ignore her and tell the cashier I am next and tell her I wanted two pieces of cake . Then the bagger lady tells her to skip me and charge the person behind me for her bread . Excuse me what ?!!! Then the lady behind me says sorry I went in front of you today , I then say yea they just skip me and act like I am not here !!! And I did not receive an apology or anything they just skip me and act like i am not there . This is extremely upsetting ! If I wait in line and I am next then I am next simple as that this is not rocket science ! Best believe I am going to call tomorrow . So highly upset . I ordered a tres leches cake for my daughter’s birthday. To send the inspiration of what I wanted I sent it to an email provided by the bakery. The person attending me did verify she received it. The day and time came to pick up my cake. She opened it so I can revise it. Everything was as I order it. Happy birthday and my daughter’s name was written in front of the cake. I was very careful to drive with it home, not my first time I’ve picked up a cake from here. Once I got home and open it to take it to the fridge the cake was a mess caused by milk mixture coming out of the cake. Since the milk mixture spilled out of the cake causing the cake to move and touch the box and ruined the part of the cake that had writhing on it. Since the bakery was a bit of a drive I try calling to speak to someone. Each option was either full invoice or leave a message they never returned. I emailed the same email I sent my inspo picture to and no response. We had to fix it in our best ability and had that part face my daughter. During the time it was in the fridge we had to continue to take it out and continue to clean the milk mixture coming out of the cake. They’ve added way to much of the milk mixture as I ate the cake it was too moist. I’m upset I wasn’t able to reach anyone to resolve this issue. Not...
