When you live in a large metropolitan area like Houston, you are inundated with places for food and drink. I frequent these eateries and taverns at least a few times every week and while I prefer variety, there are some establishments that are consistently pleasing to warrant multiple return visits and one of them is Jakes Sports Bar.
Jakes is located in Houston’s Galleria area and it features a large size interior with plentiful seating along with a small outdoor patio. There are lots of televisions for sports viewing and several video games for your own personal entertainment. If you prefer to sit at the bar, there are about 10 available seats, so you may need to wait if that is your preference.
With food, Jakes Sports Bar serves typical bar fare, but the specialty here is the cheesesteaks. And they have several from which to choose- much more than the limited options at other restaurants and sports bars. Look at the menu and you will almost certainly be able to find a cheesesteak with toppings to your liking. They serve other tasty bar food too, but I find myself always going back to the cheesesteak part of the menu.
Drinks are plentiful at Jakes Sports Bar. They have a full service bar for your drinking pleasure and about 20 taps of beer, plus bottles and cans. I like that they keep the taps rotating because it means I can find new products to try each time I visit. And I like the emphasize on local beer! Houston has a good number of breweries and many tasty suds so it is nice to see so many different Houston beers on tap, some of which you will not be able to easily find elsewhere.
Sports bars are my favorite type of bar and I also prefer places that are casual and unassuming. Jakes Sports bar fits this description well and it will continue to be my go- to place for sports, food, and brew in the Houston...

Been coming here for 30 years but hadn't gone there in the past year. What happened to the size of the sandwich? The Italian Supreme is puny and has very little meat on it. I requested extra onion and lettuce and was charged $0.75 for the lettuce. The barmaid said she didn't charge me for extra onion. Gee, thanks! I could've just about bought a whole head of lettuce at that reduced price. Total for a 5.5" sandwich was $8.16 with the extra lettuce included. And based on their condiment pricing practices, why not credit me for the oil and vinger I asked to be left off... that should've been worth at least a buck, right?
Sadly, Capriotti's (closest I've ever had in Texas to the food I grew up eating in Philly) just went out of business at FBC Town Center in Sugar Land. Their mistake was not opening close to Jake's and putting them out of business where they belong. Cap's understood how to make customers happy, which Jake's fails miserably at doing. They made generously sized sandwiches and never charged extra for condiments. More Capriotti's will be opening here soon and I can't wait because I'll never be ripped off by Jake's again. Keep an eye open for new Capriotti's franchises here. I sure will.
PS - Thanks for taking "Philly Steaks" out of your business name. It's now appropriate since your food is a poor approximation, at best. Someone needs to open a competing establishment on the same block to help you return to your former greatness under long-gone previous ownership. And the claim that it wasn't rib-eye back then by the current owner is a lie. I knew the owner then and brought him 2 gallons of San-Del peppers on a flight from Philly (hot and sweet). I don't think he lied to me about...
Read moreI went into Jakes yesterday evening. I normally just go in to pick up an order I have called in, every now and then I decided to stay and eat. Yesterday I walk in and the older guy behind the bar was so nasty to me, just rude. He mimicked me, like he had a matter of fact tone when he was telling me where the restroom was, then I feel like he sent the lady to come find me because I took too long for them in the restroom. I went back to order food with him and he was rude again, like the way he asked for my payment was just nasty. I didn’t even say anything and The lady tried to apologize for him saying he’s just very blunt, but no the fact is he is rude!! It’s NOT okay. I hope management has a conversation with him. The sad part is if management reads this, y’all know exactly who I’m talking about without a description. Fix it. I appreciate the lady for trying to fix the situation, but the only thing that could have fixed it was an apology from that man. But he’s a coward of a man who is so angry in life that he passes that negative energy on to the patrons of Jakes, I won’t be one of them. I’m typically not a sensitive person but I was so shocked by his rudeness. Side note I thought I was tripping but the philly I normally love did not taste the same.. wasn’t nearly as good as...
