I wanted to eat Italian, but they didn't open until 4 pm. Then Soul Food, but they didn't open until 2 pm. I was super hungry, hot and tired, so Buddy's it was. Since moving to WV from NorCal, I have to say the BBQ here generally makes me sad. Oakland, which was my town, has top notch BBQ, which usually sells out by noon. I will not give up though, and continue to try every BBQ place I can find. So I went to Buddy's. Their logo reminded me a bit of KPIG (Blues, R&B, Rock radio station in Cali).
I expected more sad BBQ, but they could compete in Oakland, and they may win with their chicken. WOW! I got the 4 meat platter, and a variety of sides. I am no stranger to low and slow, and my ribs and pork shoulder are restaurant quality. Brisket I don't do, as it's too expensive. I'm all about the poverty food. But I cannot make smoked chicken right. And often the chicken I've bought has been overcooked and dry, or juicy and undercooked. But Buddy's chicken? Juicy, perfectly done, and full of flavor.
I didn't know it could be that good.
I got a variety of sides, and a few of them were not to my taste. Nothing wrong with them, but I'm fussy about some things. My grandparents had a chicken (egg) farm, so I'm no stranger to farm fresh veggies. I believe corn is best cooked on the day it's picked, and barely cooked so the kernels pop in your mouth, and the juice sprays around. So I can't eat well done corn, and this was. Also I'm super fussy about corn bread and hush puppies, and while there was nothing wrong with these hush puppies, they just didn't work for me. So they stayed on the plate, while I packed up the rest of the food. I tried two desserts, both also excellent: Toffee Butter Cake, and a peanut butter and chocolate pie. (My doggie bad was huge, and I will eat well for days off of this meal)
The Chef came to my table, apologized about the sides I didn't eat, and offered me two more, for free! Again, blown away! Fabulous young man, with such courtesy and manners. My waitress was also excellent, but he was beyond the pale.
Moving is hard. I'm exhausted physically, and emotionally. Buddy's was an oasis for me, just when I needed it. And while I will continue to try every BBQ joint I find, I now have a go-to: Buddy's.
I look forward to working my way through the rest of the menu. Side Note: I have heart issues, which is why I cook most of my own food. There is just too much salt in most restaurant food, and my feet swell up like pillows. I had no adverse salt reaction at all to Buddy's food, and I ate the rest of the pulled pork when when I got home. Pulled pork is usually full of extra salt, either in the rub, or the sauce, but not Buddy's. It's safe for the...
Read moreWow this place!!! Every single item was awesome! Seriously! I got the homemade cracklins for my filipina wife. They love that stuff. My mother did too. I normally hate them. The store bought ones. Wow these were amazing!! A little hot spicy tho. I got the two meat for me and the wife. All the meat we had was wonderful. Brisket, pulled pork, supposed to be half chicken but was a quarter, and the chicken wings. Love the mango habanero sauce it's our favorite wing sauce we have had elsewhere too. Mac n cheese was delish! Wish they offered 10 hush puppies Bec it's too expensive just for the 5 pc appetizer. But some come with the meal.... Omg so good!!! Also got the potatoes skins w pulled pork. They were awesome! The BBQ sauce was amazing too! Perfect! Only reason I have 4 stars for service was the bar tender where I Sat to eat she had no idea about the beers Bec she's "not a beer drinker". So she can't answer anything about the hops or taste of the beer. To me that's absolutely silly to have someone bar tending like that. Basically clueless. But she was very polite and attentive. Hard working. So for that I can forgive her.... LoL both ladies in reacted with were very nice. When I asked about the chicharones as they call them in the Philippines or cracklins here. She was enthusiastic about them and sold me on getting them. I wanted to experience fresh hand dipped ones. Overall the food was th BEST BBQ I've ever had. Never have had every time hit a 5/5! Even better than the BBQ spot that Rick from Pawn Stars...
Read moreI eat here with just my children last night and have spent the whole day in the hospital due to food poisoning from their spinach I am done, Two bad out of three tries and that is it. If you eat here DO NOT GET THE SPINACH!
UPDATE: Went and eat in and everything was great. Got exactly what we ordered the staff was very friendly and attentive. The things just fall off of the bone. If you go I recommend eating in.
This was my first time trying this place and I am quite disappointed. I am not even sure where to start. I ordered the $39.99 sample platter, The pulled pork had bones in it.... The ribs were not too bad, The chicken was tender and seemed good until I reached the middle and found blood, not smoked coloring but blood. I ordered mashed potatoes and did not get them instead they sent cole slaw and Mac n cheese which I did not order. The baked beans were so so not my favorite and the corn was like getting it from a left over elementary school lunch tray. I was so excited to try a new BBQ place just to be let down. I give 2 stars only because it was ready at the...
