My first visit here was an emotional verging on religious experience. Jill Marks, the owner, is a delight and her baked goods are INCREDIBLE! I walked in expecting coffee shop with some baked goods for sale. I stopped in my tracks when I realized it was a bakery. As a sensitive celiac I considered leaving, thinking it was a standard bakery that also made some GF items. Clearly the bread loaves, cinnamon rolls, etc were too big to be gluten free. Was I wrong!
Jill explained the whole operation is gluten free. Including her sourdough bread. Even the starter for her sourdough is gluten free! And it tastes like real bread! Well I haven't had real bread since the 80s, I know ehat GF bread tastes and feels like. Jill's sourdough is a bit more dense than "regular" but it is delicious. No metalic, butter, tart or any of thr other funky tastes that fo with GF. And definitely not like eating styrofoam.
The cinnamon roll I tried is equally amazing. Perfect amount of cinnamon. Perfect amount of icing. Large enough that I actually cut it in 3 pieces. It is NOT a small, hard, dry hockey puck with token cinnamon and a smear of cream cheese. It is the cinnamon roll I enviously watch other people eat and enjoy.
And the black walnut scone!!! Possibly my favorite (though I see the bread becoming a staple of my daily life). I am not adverse to scones, but I know F scones to be a dry pastry with a texture of playdoh or styrofoam. Jill's scones are everything a scone should be. Moist, tender, melt in your mouth. And if you have never had black walnuts before, you're missing out on one of the most incredible flavors.
Jill Marks is the local saint of gluten free baking. She is a commercial baker who lept into selling direct to the public as well. What a blessing and gift to the celiacs and gluten-free...
Read moreSaw the vegan GF brownie from Central Market and wanted to support local so I tried it (plus points for using medjool dates for sweetness as second ingredient). Chocolate flavor is there but I'm not sure if it was underbaked or if it was the combination of ingredients (which included cashew butter) but the texture was like eating chocolate paste. It stuck to the roof of my mouth and my teeth so I had to use my tongue to scrape it off. Swallowing was kind of difficult because it was so thick it didn't break up into smaller pieces the more I chewed, hence why I called it paste like. I had to have some extra fluid in my mouth like coffee to help move it to the back of my throat. I was a disappointed by the texture but...
Read moreThese are the best cookies of all time, they are always cooked to perfection! Cookies Crumbs and Crust is my all time favorite place to get cookies to bring to a dinner or a party! I’ve been ordering cookies from here for almost two years and they never disappoint. Each time I bring them to a gathering I always have someone ask “where did you get these cookies?!” My favorites are the classic chocolate chunk, the Carolina, and the gingerbread cookies at Christmas time! CC&C also has the best, most rich and savory crackers I have ever had! It’s no wonder they sell cookies to Neiman Marcus, Chip and Joanna @ Magnolia, Central Market, Market Street, and countless other retailers around...
