There will come a day when Shoo Loong Kan makes it to 4+ stars (being that it's pretty much the only legit hot pot spot in downtown JC right now), but today is not the day.
The clearly under-staffed, overwhelmed shop felt like the "before" scene of a Valium commercial before the beleaguered heroine serer takes her medicine and all's right with the world. Except we didn't get any downers and mostly just got jostled and bumped a lot until we were done.
Anywho, broth-wise, the House Special Chili Broth delivers the LA in mala, and sensitive stomachs should definitely pre-game with Tums beforehand. The Pork Rib Broth is classic bone broth goodness and definitely the way to complement if you're opting for yin yang-style hot pot.
Al the ingredients we got came out fresh and firm, but there was one odd item none of us could figure out. It LOOKED like soft tofu, but was much harder, with an almost cartilage consistency. No idea what it was, but none of us died from eating it, so I'd consider that a winner.
Also, they don't offer bok choy. How does a Chinese hot pot spot not have bok choy. Boooooo! Boo in the name of the cabbage family!!!
Also boooo for charging $2.99pp for the sauce bar--a feature that's free in every other hot pot restaurant. They do try to sweeten the deal by also including small appetizers (spicy pig ears, seaweed salad) and desserts (weird-flavored jelly, sliced oranges, blueberries), but none of them were very good so I'd still grumble...
Read moreCame here for lunch on a Saturday and got lucky with no wait, then it filled up really quickly with an hour long wait.
Easily the best hot pot I have had outside of Flushing or Brooklyn. The portions are really good, everything tastes fresh, and the staff are super attentive and helpful (shoutout to Jason).
I eat spicy, think spice competition level, and ordered the spiciest soup base they had. They warned me that it would be too much but I got it anyway. If you’re a heat-seeker, I highly recommend. It was definitely spicy, but doable and delicious. If you only eat sriracha or grocery store hot sauce, I strongly recommend you order mild. I know others who “eat spicy” that couldn’t handle it.
The beef balls are the best I have had in the US. Also recommend any of the beef including the spicy marinated beef, the lamb, shrimp paste, and fresh noodles.
Only critique is that the sauce bar is pretty small for how big the place is and it can form a big line rather quickly. Two sauce bars might make it a bit...
Read moreSimply put, I'm obsessed. This is the BEST hotpot in Jersey City. Undeniably one of the best hot chili broths I've ever tasted. You can choose up to THREE broths. Wish they had the pickle broth here, but hopefully it's on the way. The mushroom broth is my favorite. SO MANY ITEMS. This is not AYCE, but the a la carte options are priced beautifully in relation to the portion sizes. High quality meat and seafood. Who knew I'd fall in love with fresh bean curd. THEY HAVE EEL AND IT'S DELICIOUS. Even the sauce bar is elevated; they have ice jelly, and I never realized how perfectly it cleanses the palate and counters the heat in the hot chili broth. I hesitate to write this review because I'd like to walk in without signing onto the waitlist, but it's too good not to share. I hope they have every success as they expand. I'm transitioning jobs, so I'll be eating here religiously till it's time to move on. Move over KPOT, you have some serious...
