Abby’s Pub – A Disappointing and Discriminatory Experience

I had an appalling experience at Abby’s Pub in Jersey City tonight that left me deeply unsettled. Despite it being two hours before closing, I was unfairly accused of walking a tab. My only offense was ordering three waters with cranberry and an appetizer, while a drunk patron offered to pay my bill and then changed his mind.

This misunderstanding spiraled when the bartender, who knew I was sober from my order, decided to believe the inebriated man over me. As a Black woman, I couldn’t help but feel that my race played a role in how I was treated. She chose to berate me loudly both inside and outside the bar, publicly accusing me of theft. Despite the fact that I tipped her $10 on a $15 bill to smooth things over, she continued her aggressive stance.

It was only when two other patrons confirmed my story that she reluctantly backed off. Yet, her apology was tepid and lacked the sincerity of her earlier accusations. This lack of professionalism and respect, compounded by what felt like discriminatory behavior, is unacceptable. I have witnessed a few unsavory times from the staff at abbeys but I gotta say what I saw today was crazy. I went to an open mic today to see my friend perform. She went inside to close her tab. It took a while so I came in to check in with her. She was talking to a man who was chatting to her while she waited for her tab. The man asked about her tab and said “I got it”. She kindly thanked him and we headed outside to say goodbye to the rest of the performers. Suddenly the bartender storms out of the bar yelling and flagging down my friend as if she was trying to skip out on her tab. My friend explained that the man offered to pay and the bartender said NO he didn’t very loudly. As someone who SAW HIM OFFER, it was extremely rude to treat my friend like a criminal and chase her down, yell and tell everyone in the bar that she attempted to steal. It was degrading embarrassing and mind you all over a tab less than 20 dollars Where I’m from accusing someone of stealing is a very grave offense.

Awful service, obnoxiously loud music, dirty. There were only three other patrons when we walked in around 7. We ordered some wings and a quesadilla and immediately paid because we had plans. We waited a very long time with no one updating us on the wait. Meanwhile, we could see the cook touching our quesadilla on the grill with bare hands, walking up and down the stairs, drinking, never washing his hands, and still continuously touching our food with his bare hands. After just about 45 minutes, still not getting the food, and witnessing the chef, we decided to leave without anything and the staff didn’t acknowledge us. While we were still waiting, despite only three other patrons in the whole place they had the music so loud we couldn’t hear each other talk, and then staff turned it up even louder. While ignoring us and never bringing us our food, staff were hanging out with the three other patrons and taking shots. Awful place. Awful service. Super unclean. Paid almost $30 to leave...
