Update 12/23/23 Downgrading to 4 stars. Buffet variety is way down. Many items can be ordered separately. Now feels pricey. Great variety of sweets. They can make to order anything! A Hidden GEM! BEST FOOD EVER! I have eaten at many posh places, the quality of food is absolutely out of this world. I was starving to death, and had plans to eat at another restaurant. This was the first restaurant since I was entering from tonnelle. It is way on the other side of Newark Ave if you come from the popular entrance from Kennedy Blvd. Looking at the exterior, I was hesitant to open the door. I had time to kill so decided to explore because my chole bhature order at Canteen restaurant had Wai time of 30 min to get ready. Incidentally the BEST CHOLE BHATURE ever like the ones if you have eaten in Amritsar street vendors. Very authentic. Anyway I digressed. I saw some buffet lined up. Decided to take a look. Boy was I surprised by the variety of vegetable curries, like 8 of them. On top of it various types chillies, you know they are loaded with healthy goodies like all vegetables. Frankly I was doing a sort IF, intermittent fasting, on top of it I had burned over 1600 kcal in my workout. I was wanting get electrolytes and eat different veggies. This was perfect. Ms Megha and other staff was serving with such love and affection like you are at home. This stuff money can't buy. They even had DAL-BATTI, a solid rajasthani dish: batti bathed in butter, done to perfection. That's not all. Pani puri, ras malai, two types of rice. You begal is well known for sweets. They had more variety of sweets than any place. Since I am eschewing sweets I did not try any. They had pakoda of so many types. So much food. But limit and take only what can eat, coz there is, aptly, a fine if you throw away food made so lovingly, it hurts. On top of it the even had masala dosa. I found about as I was done. I first refused, but then decided to take one. The best dosa, I need to stop saying ever, but it was so so delicious. The fermented dough started to digest the food, thank God, so I could walk, lol. If was to go again I will avoid the roti and rice, instead indulge in all the other goodies. Incidentally the buffet is the from 12 noon to 10pm 6days a week :off on Mondays. All for $12, what a treat. Be careful not expect too much of an ambiance. Bathroom is okay. Use plastic ware. Tear off paper from a big roll for napkin, must be temporary measure. All in all it stands tall in all the stuff that really matters.

Bengali Sweets Corner is NOW Desi Tadka (Veg & Non Veg Restaurant). This is another authentic Indian Restaurant in Jersey City, New Jersey. The speciality of this restaurant is, everything tastes like homemade food at very reasonable prices. It offers unlimited Buffet with variety of items including Chaat as one of the options with special Dosa of your choice. Masala Tea is a must try. They also offer various Lunch boxes depending on the need, which includes Rotis, Vegetable Curries, Dal, Sweet etc., We can find plenty of variety of fresh delicious Sweets. The staff here is very patient and cooperative. Must visit!!! If in Jersey.

We went to get some authentic Indian sweets- mostly the Bengali sweets. Although they named the shop by ‘Bengali sweets’ we didn’t find anything Bengali per se, except the rashogolla. I’m not a big fan of rashogolla, so I chose from whatever available. They had a good amount of varieties however, everything looks old. We selected a few and later discovered all of them to be dry, flavourless, and aged! Nothing was fresh. I don’t know how long they were kept like that. The place runs a vegetarian buffet style restaurant also- however, we didn’t eat there. From only the sweets, it was not much impressive at all.

The erstwhile 'Bengal Sweetshop' is renamed to Desi Tadka. The name changed. The ambience improved. But, the quality of food drastically deteriorated. This is a buffet place. In two months, visited 4 times. Two times, took a friend. In one visit, food was okay. But, the other times, the food was not even average. One time, two vegetables were stale and had foul smell. Upon informing the manager, she tested the food and immediately removed. Another time, salt was extremely high. Today (Aug 11, 2024), the experience is the worst. We went an hour before the closing time. None of the items is eatable.

Toooo spicy (even veggies, including paneer item) or cold. One dal was completely out. Another vegetable was out. That left us with three items: cabbage (cold and tasteless), paneer (very spicy), and a watery-dal.

Usually, do not eat dessert here. But, today, purposefully tried to check the quality of three sweets that were part of buffet. All of them were stale and tasteless. Since they also have a sweetshop, it seems that they have been keeping close-to-expiry sweets in the buffet as if they offer many options. Rasgulla is dry. Jilebi is juice-less.

My friend tried a piece of chicken (it's okay as it is less spicy than paneer), a small piece of fish (horrible), and a small piece of egg (too spicy)... ended with some yogurt and a sweet (which is dry and tasteless).

We gave feedback to the owners/manager. They tried to convince us that they make food in small batches throughout the day and taste might change. This stated inconsistency does not sound well. I have known this place for over 10 years (i.e. before it is renamed recently). Have thought for a while before leaving this feedback. In the best interest of the prospective customers, sharing the experience. I hope that they improve the quality of food, do not keep stale food in buffet, and maintain the consistency.

Even after seeing our plates partly unused (means we did not get refills after trying tiny portions), visibly seeing us that we hardly ate anything, and listening our feedback, they charged the same price, which is $14.99. We did not say a word as we have left it to their wisdom and customer service. We will not eat this food even if someone gives...

I used to dine here all the time pre-covid back when the old chef was around and his navratan korma was just off the hook!! So last Saturday I decided to for the buffet ($15) after work and there are some pros and cons but for the price its not bad, its got the ambience of a 90s cafe and lots of traffic so you'll hear the horns honking while you try to eat but on the plus side the staff is very friendly...I miss the old chef though... so what did i have?Everything! There was tawa noodles that were pretty good, they had fresh unlimited dosas ( only for the weekend)w/ coconut chutney, pani puri with 2 types of pani, there were samosas and pakoras too that were room temp., but the server was more than happy to warm it up when I told her, for main course there was lauki daal ki sabzi, shahi paneer which was decent, and malai kofta which was full of dryfruit so it had the richness, the butter rotis were hot and unlimited, and also rice.. for dessert, there were tiny gulab jambun that were ok but the Mango Pulp(Ras) was delicious! I couldn't stop at just one cup, It was soo rich and thick and its sweetness was just perfect it made my meal extra delicious. The only issue is other customers some folks are just nasty one man didn't bother washing hands and started handling the food and his body odor was off the charts and disgusting and its not a cheap place so for future customers please have the decency to look and smell appropriate i don't care if you live close by and don't feel the need to look or smell presentable but out of etiquette if you're going out to eat don't ruin it for others with your...
