I moved to Hoboken, New Jersey in 1988. Let me tell you, where there once were bars on every corner in the 40’s and 50’s there were now pizzerias on every corner in the 80’s and 90’s. Guess what? If you were lucky, 2% of those were good at best. Little did I know all those years ago that only a short distance away on Cerntral Avenue in The Heights was one of the most simple and delicious pizzas ever. The Grandma pie. The Grandma Pie is square, similar to a Sicilian Pie but about half if not a third of the depth. The dough / crust is slightly oily compared to regular pizza dough but still has firm and crispy moments throughout. There is no traditional pizza sauce here just beautiful plum tomatoes cooked down in a perfect complement of spices and resting amongst random piles of cheese. Nothing is worse than an overly cheesy pizza and the grandma pie is proportion perfection. On a good day I can eat a maximum of three slices of regular pizza. I can devour an entire Grandma Pie and instantly look forward to next Friday’s delivery. As an added bonus you need to cover the slice with Mama Lil’s Goat Horn Peppers. Whether you like hot or sweet peppers it don’t matter. The flavors compliment each other in a way that is unimaginable when you think you are just eating pizza. We always order a large house salad, which I usually eat myself. The salad is simple with a nice vinegar and oil dressing and if you are lucky it comes with two or three rolls made from pizza dough. You’ll find yourself cracking open the rolls and making little salad sandwiches. I know they must have something else on their menu that is delicious but to be honest, I just...
Read moreStick with me.... Last night was EXCITING! We took a spur of the moment trip to Jersey to see the NYC skyline. (My wife was literally in PJs and a blankey while it was FREEZING) I have never seen so many lights in my life, it was truly AMAZING! We ran around Liberty Park, saw the Empire State Building, Empty Sky Memorial, and Lady Liberty. THEN it was getting late and we were hungry, close to NY we need pizza so I call a place in Jersey City that has great reviews and been around family owned for decades. I'm ready to give all my order details, size, toppings, name, number, etc. You know the drill. BOY WAS I WRONG! I'm apparently a novice to this NY/NJ PIE thing. Lady answers the phone... Me: I'd like to order a pizza. Lady: 1 Pie. Me: Yes Ma'am.... as I continue to stutter over my words to tell her a size and toppings(we only wanted a cheese) Lady: See you in 20 minutes. Me: Umm do you need my name or anything? Lady: Got it. We hang up. No questions asked, no size, no toppings, no name, no price, nothing. PIE! That's all she knows, its all I know. We get there and luck out with a prime parking spot, jump out, place is packed! WHOLE Italian family working, dudes in the front making fresh dough the whole nine. Our PIE was just ready, in and out 2 minutes, still no questions or details given, still no idea the price! We literally ate the pizza in the Jeep and it was DELICIOUS!!! Turns out it was only $16.50 with tax! Such a steal! And the most exciting, real deal pizza experience...
Read moreWe had lunch at this restaurant, which offers both a restaurant and a bar for dining. The establishment is divided into two sections, allowing customers to enjoy their meals either at the front or at the bar. Adjacent to the front desk, there is another shop that serves the same delicious red pizza as fast food. Upon visiting with my friends, we opted for the mozzarella and cheese steak pizza. The waitress provided excellent service, displaying a friendly and welcoming demeanor.
The cheese pizza surpassed my expectations and stands out as one of the best pizzas I have ever had. Its thin and crispy bread provided a delightful texture, while the aroma of the cheese was truly enticing. I thoroughly enjoyed this mouthwatering creation.
However, the cheesesteak pizza left me somewhat underwhelmed. The slices of onion were overly large, which disrupted the overall balance of flavors. The cheese layer on this particular pizza was slightly thin, resulting in a less satisfying experience. Furthermore, the scent of the meat was not particularly pleasant, and it lacked the freshness and quality that I had hoped for. Consequently, the cheesesteak pizza did not meet my expectations.
Overall, this restaurant deserves a high rating for their delectable cheese pizza alone, which I would easily award five stars. However, due to the shortcomings of the cheesesteak pizza, I cannot offer a perfect rating. Nonetheless, I would still recommend Pinza for their exceptional cheese...
