We decided to try this place recently. I'm not usually a big fan of pho, but that does not factor into this 1-star review: the food I personally received was fine enough and would've warranted about 3 stars; there's not that many places that sell frog leg, after all, and it wasn't overcooked or anything.
However, we were scammed on our receipt and I did not notice until the friend who paid the check requested our parts from us a few days later. In the first image, you can see our receipt: it is entirely obfuscated what anyone got. My friend had asked for a more clearly itemized receipt (to help sort things out when we got home) and was told 'no' by the server as he was smiling. We thought that was pretty funny at the time to be honest, and we didn't really hold it against him.
Today the venmo request was for over $30, where the item I thought I had ordered was $16.95 on the menu. That didn't seem right, but my friend showed me an image on the menu of what he thought I'd ordered. You can see that item, frogs legs in chili sauce w/ lemongrass (U4) circled in the second image: it has a price of 25.95. However, what I had actually ordered, while pointing to the menu and also saying the item number out loud to the server, was item 124, also frogs legs in chili sauce and lemongrass. I did not know item U4 even existed since I had only planned to spend in the $10-$20 range. When my food came out, I had no suspicion that I had ordered a larger item as the portion was modest; I would not say it was small, just that it was a 1-person serving and I would not imagine being served a smaller size for $17.
Normally I would chalk this up to an honest mistake, but 1. I did specify the number of the menu item, and 2. the staff intentionally did not provide a receipt with sufficient information. I would not have assumed I had made the $25.95 order looking at that receipt; I would've assumed someone else in my party had. In any event, I would personally avoid returning to this location. My friend ordered the $27 pho and that looked like a 1-star bowl (they used broccoli and cauliflower), but this 1-star review pertains solely to my own experience, both in receiving the incorrect order and receiving a small portion for...
Read moreWhen New Thanh Hoai closed on May 31 there was literally no Vietnamese cuisine available in Jersey City. To my pleasant surprise I ran into Kung Fu Pho, well more because I live down the block.
I was there on their 3rd day of opening and everything I ordered was on point. No not like your typical run of the mill bs half Chinese half Vietnamese spots you find in NYC. Iâm talking a Houstonian palate review here.
We ordered the goi cuon with shrimp, bo tai chanh (raw beef salad), pho Dac biet with Bo vien, banh cuon, banh Xeo and banh mi Dac biet. All I can say is I forgot about the other place that closed.
Legit all around. All of it. The banh mi bread was crispy and flaky and they used all the correct meats and pate. Yes reread that. All banh mi spots here in nj and nyc are trash. They donât know what a banh mi is here. Bo tai chanh could use a bit more dressing (fried shallots and basil). Banh cuon was fire. Banh xeo was good, except could use more shrimp.
Will def be back. Honestly Iâll probably eat here 4 times a week since itâs so close.
Update: portions have been reduced significantly and quality has gone downhill noticeably. It may satisfy a craving for Vietnamese cuisine on the spot but beware of unjustifiably high prices to portion ratio and subpar flavors. The pho broth is bland and missing all the...
Read moreWe came here for the first time 3 years ago, there was a fly in our vermicelli dish and the food tasted mediocre. We didnât come back since. Today we tried this place again cus I was craving and the pho is honestly 5/10. Itâs average but the meat portion is lacking and the meat itself is overcooked (it becomes gritty in your mouth). The broth is lacking depth. The Viet ice coffee is about average. The avocado smoothie literally tastes like milk and froth, there is no avocado taste at all. We took 2 sips and left it. The waiter asked if we wanted a cup for it to go after telling him it tastes like nothing, which we were so confused about.
Service was mid but the atmosphere is good though! Really wish the food was just better. A decent place to go get your pho cravings temporarily (especially since thereâs no other good pho around here). I would like to also say they charged us $2 for a small plate of onions (legit like 2 cuts worth) ⊠like what? Weâve never been charged at other places. Thatâs like charging us for the bean sprouts or basils⊠also they give you lemons...
