Let me start by saying that I love thai food and I try to never leave negative reviews because I'm aware how they can affect a restaurant's ratings. After a truly horrendous experience at One Dee Siam I feel obligated so others do not make the same mistake and eat there.
We booked a reservation for 5 pretty early in the evening on a Friday and took advantage of the BYOB policy and bought a couple bottles of wine purchased nearby. Service was lack luster to begin with, requests for some ice or an ice bucket to keep our white wine cold was met with stares then eventually an ice bucket after some protest. This however was not the worst of it.
I wanted to try something new and ordered the BBQ Pork Chinese Broccoli. What was brought to me was a flavorless plate of about 2 ounces of grey pork and ton of Chinese broccoli. I separated the pork from the broccoli into a tiny little pile to confirm that there was close to no meat on the plate. I tried it and it had no flavor, no heat, no spice, no sauce, just bland. I called over one of the waiters and explained that the meal wasn't to my satisfaction, had very little flavor, and also very little meat. I asked if it was possible to send this dish back and order drunken noodles with chicken (my standby). This is the same guy who stared at me for asking for an ice bucket and his reaction was the same. He stared at me as if I was insane then said no, I cannot order a new dish, they will remake the same dish for me. I thought this to be extremely odd and rude but I didn't want to raise too much fuss in front of my guests so I agreed and said it was okay to add a bit of flavor or spice as well, since the dish was so bland. Previously working in the food service industry I was worried that this was the kiss of death - my food would come back freshly microwaved with a nice bit of spit mixed in. What came back to me less than 5 minutes later was the equivalent of a nice hardy FU from the waiter and the kitchen - the same exact dish absolutely drenched in chili paste, so much chili paste that it made the dish completely inedible. I looked at this dish in horror and felt the anger of being slapped across the face. I called over the same waiter and he stood there smugly and asked how my meal tasted. I calmly leaned over to him and explained that I know exactly what he did, that the dish was inedible as is, and asked him if he would eat it, and after much protest and back and forth he said no. I asked to speak to the owner and 5 minutes later the same waiter came back, removed my dish, and said he talked to the owner and it will be taken off the bill. That was it.
No apology, no offer of making another dish (that I would have gladly paid for and eaten), no customer service. Just a horrible place with horrible food and horrible service. I ended up leaving and getting pizza across the street while my friends finished their meals.
The rating of 3.8 is generous, this is easily one of the worst restaurants I have ever had the displeasure...

We tried One Dee Siam again after an abysmal first visit. Sadly, the second visit did not impress as well. We arrived at dinner time the day after Thanksgiving and noticed there were only 3 other parties dining. We waited a bit to be acknowledged by a worker and we were seated thereafter. The service was slow albeit it was a day after the holiday. Onto the food
Tod Mun Pla ($7.95): The spicy fish cakes, 6 small cakes in an order, were tasty. It's hard to screw these up. They were spiced nicely and had a nice chew to them. They were not spicy to me but the accompanying sauce provides a nice contrast and cooling effect if you find it spicy.
Crispy Pork with Chinese Watercress ($16.95): Deep fried pork belly strips with stir fried watercress. This was just an ok dish. They're pretty stingy with the pork belly and the watercress made the dish too watery. They rate it a 2 out of 3 spice level and I could not detect any spice at all. The flavors were too muted for my liking.
Basil Fried Rice with Seafood ($18.95): Rice stir fried with Thai basil, curry paste, and mixed seafood. I asked for this dish Thai spicy and it failed miserably. This dish was too sweet and visually pleasing.
Unfortunately, I do not recommend this restaurant although it is the best Thai restaurant in Jersey City, though that is not saying much. The service is friendly but slow, the food is not flavorful and not the worth the price. I'll stick to Elmhurst for the best Thai food food.
We were so excited to hear of a new Thai restaurant in Jersey City and one with a good reputation in NYC. We came at dinner time on its grand opening and man it was a mess. There was no coordination between the staff so people waiting in line to dine in were skipped for others just arriving and food orders taking well over 1 hour to arrive.
Onto the food. Catfish salad, Crispy pork with watercress, Pad See Ew were ordered. The catfish salad was tasty. It had the right mix of salty, sour, sweet, and crunchy from the green mango and catfish. The catfish is not fishy tasting so don’t be afraid, it’s more of a texture thing. All the foods had a good balance of flavor, more sweet than anything though. I think the flavors were toned down on the spicy and sour flavors as many might not like it. I would ask for more spice and less sugar when ordering. The service was friendly but understaffed and uncoordinated.
So far it is the best Thai restaurant in JC albeit their organization and structure. We will try One Dee again hopefully they will have worked out...

So I came and met some family to eat some authentic Thai food. We found the restaurant online and reviews were stellar so we decided to come.
Anyways, when my family (party of 3, remember that for later) got to the restaurant before I and food was ok, nothing in particular to write home about. We ordered spring rolls, chicken wings and curry puffs as appetizers. I get there 20 mins later and when I walk in, no one acknowledges me but i find my family. Then I am ready to order my appetizers we are waving and our server walks towards us, turns about face and starts going to tables filling their water glasses. I assumed maybe she didn't notice so when she makes her way closer we wave again to see if she could stop over. Visibly annoyed with us she takes my order. Food comes. It's pretty good to be quite honest.
We eat and ask for the bill. Now, no where does it say there is a mandatory minimum gratuity of 20% either at the door, table, in the menu or told by the server. So the bill is $113. We give $120, for $7 tip. Service was less than desired and it wasn't that busy. Anyways, so one of my family members goes to the bathroom and another server brings the change. We say keep it, it is tip. The server then proceeds to tell us minimum tip is about 20.00 due to the total bill price. So my family member returns from the restroom and he stands over his chair and we get up to leave. The server then goes back to the table opens the check book immediately and sees there is no additional tip. Again she has an attitude saying we need to give more tip. The reason being it is for the resturaunts services. I am confused, is the bill not paid she is like yes but the tip is not enough. So we tell her we have no more cash but if she returns the cash I will pay the bill on my card and leave a 22.00 tip. She declines. She says the bill is already paid. So I suggest well if I order another item can I add tip on that order. She is no, cash. So we decide to leave.
She slams the check book hard on the table making the other patrons take notice. I was so embarrassed. Like I get you should tip your server well and resturaunts are trying to recoup their money for covid, however service was lousy. Also your server was rude. Why would I pay more for your services? You mean doing your job as a restaurant? But when I come with a solution and it's not what you like you try to make a scene. Never will I ever come back here. Not because of the food but the service and...
