I was trying to find a local salon that could give NYC quality service. Since Shampoo JC had the most number of reviews on Yelp, I decided to walk in and have a consultation with whoever was available - which turned out to be FRANCESCA. She was very nice and I felt like she really understood what I wanted done, so I decided to take a chance with this salon. However, she wasn't available til a couple of weeks out and I couldn't wait that long. She assured me that JACKIE was more than capable of taking care of me and that she (Francesca) will be there on the day of my appointment to make sure Jackie knows and understands what she and I have talked about and agreed on.
A week later (3/29), I was back for my appointment. Francesca was NOT in the salon. I was disappointed but thought that if Jackie was as great as Francesca said she was then I have no problem explaining what I want done again. I sit in the chair and showed Jackie photos of the cut I wanted and the color that I wanted. I told her that I wanted a long bob, and pointed a few inches below my collarbone to show her how long I want my hair to be. All through this she was nodding yes, and even said, "I know exactly what you want."
She then cut my hair in chunks and joked that she was done with the cut. I thought it was distasteful but just smiled. She then proceeded to cut off more chunks of hair (I thought she was done) and then -- EVEN MORE hair! This was when I asked her what she was doing. ONE HALF OF MY HAIR WAS THE RIGHT LENGTH BUT THE OTHER WAS CHIN LENGTH! She looked surprised that I was panicking. And then it slowly dawned on her that she cut off WAY TOO MUCH. She apologized of course, but the apology can't really make me feel better. I didn't have a choice but to have her continue and finish the cut (I'm not walking out with half short, half long, choppy hair) but to be honest, I just wanted to get out of there.
I'm not one to make a scene but this is the first time in my entire life that I felt so upset/frustrated/disappointed/agitated about a haircut especially when:
I showed a photo of the length and color that I wanted. I told her I wanted a LONG bob (how anyone can misunderstand this is beyond me) I pointed with my finger exactly how long I want it, even saying it should be a couple of inches BELOW THE COLLARBONE.
Then Jackie had the audacity to say that it was a MISCOMMUNICATION. I don't know what else I could've done to be any clearer! She then asked me to still let her color my hair. I refused because I simply CANNOT TRUST her anymore. This is when the floor manager walked up and apologized, asking if I would let the owner fix my hair, or they will give me a complimentary service when I come back, etc. Yes, I understand that they are trying to fix things but I am SO UPSET and I HATE THE CUT so much (TOO SHORT and LAYERS ARE CHOPPY) that I WOULDN'T DARE COME BACK.
I really wanted to like Shampoo JC. I liked Francesca. Maybe if she was the one doing my hair, I would've been singing praises instead.
Oh and I'd also like to mention that one of the girls in the salon (the one with silver/grey hair) was telling Jackie in a VERY ANNOYED voice, "She's done. Just let her go." (note that Jackie still needed to "polish" the cut) She probably thinks I didn't hear her. To me that just speaks volumes of how she treats clients.
At least Jackie sounded like she was sorry and was trying to fix it. Though it still doesn't change the fact that EACH TIME I look in the mirror and see this HORRIBLE cut, I will be reminded of this AWFUL experience. Needless to say, I will NEVER step foot in...
Read moreMost of my adult life has been dedicated to the barbershop mentality of simple haircuts with little-to-no direction or discretion. Snip snip, buzz buzz, be on your way. That all changed about a year ago when I stepped into Shampoo JC, on a whim, to get my first haircut from Christina.
It was at Shampoo JC that I learned how much thought and taste could go into a man's haircut. For just a few shekels more than I would pay at the traditional barbershop, I could receive a complimentary beer, a deliriously awesome shampoo, and the high standards of someone trained and passionate in the aesthetics of hair.
Christina has continuously blown my mind with her nuanced and deliberate sense of style. Her skills are beyond reproach. The first thing my girlfriend of 2+ years told me when I got home from my first cut was, "That's the best haircut you've ever had." In fact she promptly made an appointment with Christina herself. And in the months between appointments, I receive numerous, sporadic compliments in the form of, "Did you get your hair cut yesterday?" No, I got my hair cut a month ago, but Christina cut it such that a month later it looks like a fresh job.
My hair has always suffered from a kind of puffiness around the edges that has rendered it impossible to grow out. This problem is history at the hands of Christina. I'm due for another cut next week, but I am by no means shaggy (as I usually am before needing a haircut). My hair is long, but it has grown so well along the tasteful contours established upfront by Christina. I intend to grow it out longer still, which I can do for the first time in my life because I don't have to fret about the awkward phases between here and there.
And beyond Christina - who, well, seriously guys, get Christina if you can - the establishment itself is so welcoming and well put together. It is simply a pleasure to go. A beverage served upon arrival. Eclectic art all over the walls. A fine range of products at reasonable prices. Excellent customer service all around. I'll usually schedule my appointments after the work day, and Shampoo JC always offers such a nice disconnect from a stressful day.
I currently live in Grove Pointe, which is a 30 second walk from Shampoo JC. I'll soon be moving to Harrison, which will be a 10-15 minute train ride away. For what it's worth, there is no way I'll be changing my hair salon for the sake of convenience after I move. Hell, I could move to Brooklyn, and I would still make my way out to Jersey City to get my haircut from this place.
Thank you Shampoo JC for such a consistently...
Read moreI absolutely loved their service and hands down this salon is the best and cleanest salon in Jersey City. Tracy did my hair balayage and I love love loved it. She was extremely patient as I wanted to change the hint of my color after the first application and she redid the coloring as per my request. The results were exactly as I wanted.
Also the place follows proper sanitation guidelines due to COVID-19. Here is what they do: They check your temperature and your stylist's temperature before entering. They also send an email about this prior to your appointment so that you are prepared. 2.You are provided with hand sanitizer to sanitize your hands after you clear temperature check. 3.You cannot wait inside (including stylists who are entering with you) due to social distancing rules, so you will have to wait outside until they sanitize the seats and clean the area before entering. 4.You will need to wear a mask with ear loops and you must wear it the whole time you are inside the salon. This also applies to the staff inside and none of them removed it. I had hair coloring, hair cut and blow dry service which took approximately 4.5 hours and we wore masks the whole time. 5.The seats are covered with disposable sheets and are changed after every client's service is done. No adjacent seating rule. The next client is made to sit leaving a seat in between you and them. Also the in between seat is never used and huge transparent shields are placed next to the seats. In a nutshell, you are seated at a distance of more than 6 feet from the other client with shields. You probably can see the shield in the picture but it is transparent. The rules apply to hair washing station as well. 7.All their hair tools are properly sanitized before a stylist uses it on you.
Overall I was extremely pleased and most importantly I felt safe to go here. If your looking for an excellent salon, go here and you wont...
