Until yesterday, I could say that my friends and I often went to South House. We were frequent customers on the weekends. Last night's interaction has turned me off to going back.
I ordered a few apps on UberEats. All simple/quick things to make.
I got the notification that the food was ready and then I walked to south house which is about a 5 min walk from where I live. When I arrived, they couldn’t find my order. 10 min later they found it but told me the food had not been started yet. A manager, I heard the hostess call him Eddie, told me they will have the food ready soon. Since I was waiting so long the hostess let me know that they will refund my whole order. Finally the food comes up stairs from the kitchen 25 min after I arrived (30 min after I got a notification that the food was ready. Want to note that I orders very easy to make apps). The food runner looks at the bag before he hands it to me with a weird look (as in he already knew it was not right but waited for me to call it out!!). I looked in the bag and the food runner said “oh is there something missing? I think it’s the chips, I’ll go get those”. Then he came back up and I said what about the green tomatoes?? And he replied “oh we don’t have those anymore so we didn’t make them”. No one offered to give me something else in exchange. I still have not gotten refunded as promised so I just stopped into the restaurant in person now and they said I have to dispute it through the app. Well, that isn’t even an option on the app!!
Seems South House wants to give me the run around instead of solving the problem by offering a different app. in place of the one missing or since they offered to refund the entire order, they should have just given a gift card for that amount.
Also, on a side note - the food runner in the above story also hangs out in the rec room when off the clock and is a real d* to people trying...
Read moreAn Utter Disappointment and Disrespect to Patrons - Never Again!
My evening at South House in Jersey City transitioned from eager anticipation to sheer disbelief and frustration, marking an experience so dismal it demands public sharing. As a traveler who values reliable service and honest communication, the treatment I received at this establishment was nothing short of appalling.
I specifically called ahead, ensuring my visit was timed perfectly to enjoy a late meal, being informed the kitchen welcomed orders until 11 PM. Imagine the shock, arriving at 10:45 PM, to be bluntly told the kitchen had prematurely ceased operations for the night. This blatant disregard for customer service and failure to honor their word is unacceptable.
This isn't merely about missing out on a meal; it's a reflection of a deeply ingrained unprofessionalism and a lackadaisical attitude towards patrons. To travel, especially, and to plan around a business's commitments, only to be met with such unreliability is infuriating.
South House's inability to provide consistent information or to cater to a guest who had taken every precaution to align with their guidelines is not only disappointing; it's disrespectful. It showcases a profound failure in basic hospitality principles.
To the management and staff of South House, consider this a lost opportunity to impress and retain a customer who values dining experiences and the integrity of a business's word. The inconsistency and lack of professionalism displayed are inexcusable, and it's clear that my patronage, let alone any recommendation, is entirely unwarranted.
To fellow diners and travelers seeking a reliable and respectful dining experience in Jersey City, let this serve as a cautionary tale. There are establishments that will value your time and patronage - South House, regrettably, is not...
Read moreI rarely will review a restaurant when the food is subpar, preferring to let everyone have their experience which may be much different than mine. But the meal my companions and I had at this restaurant on this day is worth noting. I had high promise for this restaurant by the prior reviews I had read and that it had been recommended by a few of the locals. Unfortunately, there was no one in my party who had a good experience with their meal. I would consider the menu to be solidly Tex-Mex, a menu which I know well. As my first meal of the day I was going to order the chilaquiles (sort of like a breakfast nachos with eggs). I was a bit confused when I was asked whether I would like this as a burrito or a chimichanga. I opted for the burrito. The chips, meat and cheese were heated and wrapped in a flour tortilla and cut in half. The problem was that the dish was not hot and the center ingredients were absolutely cold, as if everything had been refrigerated and warmed just enough to be able to wrap. It was inedible. Three people ordered the breakfast platter and it was clear that the biscuits were not fresh, but had been reheated making the exterior very hard and no fluffiness in the interior at all. Even the bacon seems to have been from a prior meal service with a few of the top pieces being fresh, but the under pieces were over done and some downright burned! The chicken wings were okay, but just okay as a few of them had pretty dry flesh. The steak sandwich did not fare any better. No matter how much processed cheese it is drowned in, it will not make the beefsteak tender. The wait staff tried as best she could to make us happy with offers of other options, but the damage had been done. I wish any of you willing to try this place a better experience. Unfortunately, it did not work for us. Good luck...
