Giving this place the benefit of the doubt that within the next few weeks things will change but the experience I had a day ago was not ideal. Started the dinner off with ordering guac and chips for a table of five - a couple of my party were a few minutes out so wanted to get something for the table for when they got there. The order of guac and chips took about 30 mins to get to the table even after the waitress checked in a couple times. The first drink I ordered was incorrect. So had to wait about 10 mins to get the right version (Sparkling spiked Jamaica) but granted the bar was full. When I got the Sparkling drink it was very good.
When the table place our order we added - Camarones Al Ajillo - the shrimp lack flavor almost as if the shrimp wasn’t cooked in the sauce it comes with so it tastes plain. But the couple bits of chorizo with the shrimp was tasty. And also ordered the ceviche which was fine but, the Serrano chilies used in the sauce overpowered the dish. Wish we could taste more of that lime/acidity base with the fish.
Items ordered for dinner - The Carne Asado, steak was flavorless Chile Pablano - Rice needed more flavor, beans and pepper were good Enchilada Suiza - Good sauce Fish and chips - Good batter on the fish
In the beginning service was slow, but everyone nice. We had to ask for a few things over and over again like plates or utensils, checking in on food etc. But at the end of the night the waitress gave us a small sampling of the frozen Irish coffee drink which was tasty. I think she noticed all the delays with food/service. And we were there to celebrate a birthday so she mentioned we shouldn’t leave without a treat to celebrate it.
In a previous visit a couple nights prior to this - I sat at the bar with my partner. Felt the staff was friendly and attentive. We ordered the scotch egg. Now looking back it’s been the best most flavorful item I’ve tried so far. Other items had - Chicken Curry Tacos, chicken needed more flavor. And Birria tacos - which were good flavor wise. The tacos are a tad small for the price. And the nachos - the queso seemed gritty but good flavor and the chips were fine, no homemade or warmed.
Im sure they are still working through the kinks of service, but next time would go here to sit at the bar and spend the money on the drinks...
Read moreSan Patricios is a very welcome extension of the Dead Rabbit series in the highly underrated spot of Jersey City! 👏
The Dead Rabbit is my favorite spot in New York - the drinks are exceptional, innovative and well crafted, and the aesthetic of the pub is my favorite. When I saw they were announcing a Mexican-Irish spot I was so excited - overall very good, though some things naturally differ from the Manhattan location.
As I said, the aesthetic of the Dead Rabbit and curation of the space is why I love it so much. I was very happy to see the signature saw dust on the floor here, as well as the eclectic and cultural art celebrating both the Irish and Mexican traditions. The custom banderas de papel picado were my favorite, as well as their resident artist’s design on the Guinness glasses! I did notice at least one poster that was AI generated, which stood out to me since Dead Rabbit usually puts such emphasis on design. (I’m looking at you Mexican grand Priis poster…)
The best part were the drinks, we tried a bunch and every single one was expertly handcrafted and delicious, as always! While nothing crazy extensive, the menu and the drinks had a very welcome cultural transfusion of Irish and Mexican cuisine that worked very well together. The chicken curry tacos and Irish coffee tres leches were fire 🔥 . The Irish take on queso fundito wasn’t quite my favorite, but still creative. I usually never comment on staff as I have faced the horrors of working in the restaurant industry, but service was just a little on the slower side with receiving check and food, totally understandable for a new spot and nothing that took away from the overall experience.
Will definitely be back whenever I’m in the JC area for drinks and light bites!
EDIT: No worries at all on the poster, I thought that’s what happened, and I appreciate the team clarifying they hadn’t realized when purchasing! All in all, it was a great experience, I enjoyed the experience and will be back, and thank you to the staff for the wonderful...
Read moreThank you Jennifer and the Hudson Hound team for making our birthday celebration a memorable one. It was truly an amazing night, and I am so thankful that we were able to work with you and the team. We contacted Jennifer a couple months ago to rent out the full downstairs bar (Nucky's) for the night. After looking at a few locations in JC, we found that Hudson Hound was the most accommodating and least pretentious. Jennifer was so hospitable, accommodating our needs seamlessly. Their premium bar package allowed us to cater to our favourite types of alcohol brands. Some other locations were going to charge us an additional premium price to swap Absolute for Titos. They don't charge to plate dessert, which is a plus. We had an ice cream cake, and was able to store it in their freezer without a fuss. On the day off, I was able to arrive early to set up and decorate. I was able to come and go as I needed, which made the day of planning so much easier. We rented a photo booth, and Jennifer was able to help accommodate, finding a perfect spot for it. She even helped source decorations when party city was just too far away. FYI there's a dollar store across the street. The bartenders of the evening really took care of everyone, and were so fun and gracious! I can't thank them enough! They worked with the playlist (the ever so long playlist) we had, and even queued up songs that worked with the feel of the party. All in all, we had a fantastic experience working with Jennifer and the Hudson Hound team. She was very responsive, and honestly, went above and beyond to help us out. I highly recommend if anyone is looking to rent out the space for a party. We had about 45 people downstairs, which was perfect amount of space for people to move about. It's close to the path, and there's some parking lots/ street parking in and around the area. Super convenient and definitely...
