Disappointing service, disappointing food, hefty price tag!
I ate at American Slang twice, once for breakfast, and once for dinner. The drinks I had at dinner were expensive and poor/mediocre, their smokey martini tasted mostly of vodka. It was supposed to have Artbeg scotch in it, but it only had a splash of it on top which was gone with the first sip. The rest of the martini was vodka and a couple stray ice cubes that passed through the strainer. We ordered another drink with rosemary and it was OK. The chicken we ordered was so overcooked and dry that it was actually difficult to eat, and the steamed green beans were probably the best part of the meal. The grilled salmon was overcharred and overcooked to the point of being slightly rubbery and bitter. The baked mushroom and Yukon mash was OK. The green beans and fingerling potatoes were fine but nothing special.
We had breakfast and got a KC omelette and a KC breakfast. Here the food was mediocre/good, but slightly overpriced as expected of a hotel breakfast. The service, however, was bad. Despite not having a lot of customers, we had to struggle to get the attention of the wait staff. Common requests such as creamer/milk for coffee was initiated by us and no forethought was given by the wait staff. None of that is absolutely deal breaking, but it is not worth the price with so many better options nearby. There are better restaurants across the street, with a 5 min walking time, that have wonderful drinks for dinner and are even cheaper than American Slang. If you need to grab a bite and are staying at the hotel, try to take a walk around before eating at...
ย ย ย Read moreAmerican slang is the restaurant at the Intercontinental hotel in KC. Recently we had a great experience that protends well for the future of the restaurant and the hotel. Last Sunday there was a pounding rain. As a result, many hotel guests got breakfast at the hotel rather than venturing out. There is no way anyone could have predicted the large number of people coming down at the same time. They were understandably very short staffed. The server Adam and the rest of the crew did an amazing job handling the crush. It was very impressive to see the new General Manager of the hotel leave his office and come to help clear tables. He was wiping things down and clearing up in his suit. This teamwork and positive attitude was refreshing. Great...
ย ย ย Read moreI went with 4 girlfriends for the high tea. It was nothing like we thought. Starters the tea sandwich selection that was advertised was not what was offered at all. There were about 8 sandwiches for 4 people the dessert selection was also not as varied and lacking in volume. To top it off our waiter didnt speak English and was clearly rushing us.The experience was not great and I would never recommend this for a girls afternoon. Also there were 2 weddings going on and the expectation of an upscale experience was lost with all the noise and staff members running around. Lastly this"high tea" per person was $34 plus tax needless to say over priced for...
