Met a friend at this restaurant last week, it was the first time for both of us. Upon walking in we heard a shout from the back that someone would be right with us. A few minutes later a woman came up the register, handed us one menu telling us to decide then come back up the register to order. So after taking turns with the menu my friend and I placed separate orders then sat at a table directly in front of the register. As we sat and talked a young man brought my friend's food in two paper bags (1 Jamaican Patty and 1 Coco Bread) even though we had intended on eating at the restaurant. Neither of us were asked if it was to eat at the there or to go. So my friend and I talked as we waited for my food, figuring it would take a little longer since I had ordered Jerk Chicken with two sides. Finally, after waiting about 25 minutes I went up to the counter and spoke up trying to get the attention of an employee since none were around since we were seated. When someone arrived I inquired about my order only to find out it was packaged to go sitting on the bar for who knows how long because no one ever announced my order was ready and we were the only customers there. I took my food bag to the table to dine with my friend only to find I was not given a fork. Back up to the counter I go looking again for an employee who finally came back in to view and gave me a fork. Why did they bring my friend's food to the table but sit mine at a bar to sit and get cold? I will never know. My friend enjoyed her Jamaican Patty and Coco Bread. I did like the Jerked Chicken which I ended up eating back at the office since I was on my lunch and ran short on time. The two sides I chose were the Rice and Peas (bland) and Fried Plantains which seemed more boiled than fried. It was just a really...
Read moreMy (Jamaican) husband and I were craving some good Jamaican food when we came across this place. It had great reviews, but boy were they misguided. I don't usually like to complain much, but considering the price of many Jamaican dishes, customers deserve to be warned.
When we picked up, they said that the online ordering system is incorrect. It was weird and some prices were missing, but there was also an issue of selecting two sides when the online platform only allows for one. Okay, no biggie.
We get to the car and try a fried dumpling. It was really good, so we were excited to try the rest. I got Escovitch snapper (my absolute favorite Jamaican dish), husband got the curry goat.
The snapper was extremely dried out and over-fried. There was also no sauce to go with it to help it at all. The only way it had any flavor was if you ate a forkful of the pickled veggies with it, but the fish was so dry that there wasn't any flavor of the actual meat in it.
My husband's goat curry had so much black pepper in it that it was grainy. There was a large portion, but it was tough and nearly inedible. Even the rice and peas tasted like it'd been sitting out a while- the peas were hard, the rice was dry and flavorless. The fried plantains weren't the soft and crispy, sweetened goodness we expected. It was literally an under-ripe plantain, cut, and thrown into the fryer- the flavor. ~$70 later, we're pretty damn...

That said where ever I am going in the world I will often plan my vacation spot, my travel schedule and hotel room based on where the local Jamaican restaurant is and always will order first visit the Jerk Chicken and rice and peas. If these have the authentic taste I remember growing up in Jamaica then undoubtedly I will return and give my recommendation to all that I can!! 80% I never return to or even bother reviewing, but this Fern Gully place, the nice friendly lady at front and the lovely Miss Rose that came out from around the back, de food did nice, it did propa!!!!
