Last night it was my first time here although my family goes often to the Summerlin branch. Overall a good choice for Mexican food and casual ambience. Service was good. Our waiter provided decent service but could have done it better and I will tell you why later. The choice for chips and salsa as soon as you arrive is a good but here my first suggestion for them ….. the chips are way to salty - less salt will be key to make it perfect because the sauces have enough salt too. This was the impression of many people in the group. With the chips there are two sauces: red (type of pico de gallo) and the brown one which is the winner, mild, not spicy but very tasty. In the menu you can find appetizers, tacos, burros, etc and about 3 choices for dessert. They offer a selection of margaritas too. We didn’t find anything extra special in the food ordered for a group of 15 people. I went for pozole soup and I requested not to add onions, the waiter said that it wasn’t possible because the onions were already cooked in the soup. I ordered that soup anyways knowing that I will have cooked onions but my surprise was to find a bunch of chopped fresh onions in the soup, this ruined my experience because I was specific about not having fresh onions in the soup. I wonder if the waiter doesn’t know well about the menu or simply he didn’t care about my request. I ended up removing all the pieces of onions manually and when I finished my soup was cold (see picture). Please take in consideration your clients request. The little ice cream with the candle and the Mexican hat to celebrate birthdays is a good idea. It would be nice to hear Mexican music because you are in a Mexican cantina however the mix we heard was from Colombia, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic with salsa, bachata, regueton , merengue why not rancheras or Mexican music to complement the menu and name of the restaurant.? Small details that can make a big impact at the end...
Read moreWe came in yesterday (Mother’s Day), which we expected to be busy. After a small wait we were seated with menus, and were greeted shortly after by our server. She was excellent, and I have no complaints about her service or the food, even though a very hot plate was brought out with our kids food on it. (Why would a very hot plate be given to a child anyway?). My issues are actually with a lack of staffing and how management seemed SO poorly prepared for a busy holiday. Our server was seated with SEVEN tables within 10 minutes of us sitting down. This is insanity and reflects poor management. If I had not been aware of how crazy this is (either because of the hosts/FOH/management) I would’ve been more pissed about a beer sitting at the bar for 15 minutes (we counted) or never getting water and chip refills. Our server was constantly running around greeting tables and I could tell she was in the weeds. When she stopped to check on us and our food, I told her she was doing fantastically but I’d like to speak with a manager because the way her section was seated was ridiculous. She was being set up to fail. I then noticed who I assumed was FOH manager taking drink orders, but this was after 7 tables went down. A manager came out to prebus our plates, and as I tried to explain what I had seen, I felt I was being talked over and not really listened to. He explained how he had only been there 2 weeks (which my husband didn’t believe because he has been coming for a few months and has seen this manager before) and how short staffed they had been, but I just saw that as excuses rather than realizing Mother’s Day is a day to be better prepared for. Even if he was new to this restaurant, someone in a management position knows better and should staff correctly. If being short-staffed is actually an issue, I can see why nobody would want to work there for very long- they aren’t being...
Read moreMan I wish margaritas weren't so delicious and refreshing.
When you walk into a place and the barkeep tells you they are the inventors of the "Original Margarita", well you might as well stick a fork in me, 'cause I ain't going nowhere anytime soon.
In case you're wondering, the "Original Margarita" is a damn fine margarita.
My barkeep was House, and he was just about as brilliant as his more famous medical namesake.
I started with the Mexican corn. Mexican corn is a truly odd experience for a Midwestern kid who was raised on corn-on-the-cob. Back home, the only way people cooked corn-on-the-cob was in a pot of boiling water, a method which all but removes every bit of flavor from the corn (it's a wonder I wasn't culinarily scarred for life).
Forgive the tangent here, but if I could travel back in time, I would go back to my grade school self and introduce myself to Mexican Corn (and then we would explode into non-existence when we make contact in the congratulatory high five).
Needless to say, there is a reason the Mexican Corn is pretty much the only picture on the menu. No matter what else you try, you need to try the Mexican Corn.
House picked two tacos for me and kept the margaritas flowing. I will honestly admit I cannot remember which tacos I got, but that may be due to House's master mixology skills. I can say, without a doubt, that they were two of the best I have ever had.
The prices here are quite high, which is the sole reason for the missing star. I'm not completely saying the price point doesn't match the food and service quality, but the prices need to come down a little bit to be a 5 star joint, especially on the "Original Margarita", which hits you at a whopping $10 a piece.
But the good news, happy hour has the "Original Margarita" at half price. Guess where you'll be finding me...
