My wife took me here for my birthday and I'll be honest: by Google review I figured "probably just another dime-a-dozen burger pub place"..
I. Was. WRONG!
Their music selection created a perfect ambiance that, with the crowd spacing, kept things lively but not SO much that the wife and I couldn't hear each other.
The service was prompt and charming, and the waitress even designed some of the cocktails we tried!
I have never had Detroit style pizza before, but if you like deep dish Chicago style...OR wish that style had a little less bread, I think you'll both love it!
It was like the shape of the old school cafeteria square pizza, but the crispiness and perfect consistency of those personal pan pizza hut pizzas, and flavor, toppings, and plating all top notch!
I had a surgery years ago to help me breathe and it hindered my sense of smell, flavors are still there, just weaker. So now texture is one of my MAJOR experiences of taste left to me and their pizza was a delight, on all counts but especially there (my wife has a wolf nose and also tried some of my pizza and said it was delicious too, if that helps for nose-havers.)
Lastly the beer and dessert. They have wonderful beers on tap including a few unique ones like a graham cracker stout that you couldn't just get on any stop on nearby mass street.
And I had their donuts with chocolate ganache for my birthday boy dessert. They weren't donuts. They were perfectly made custard hiding in a fried dough cloak.
I have never had anything like them, fresh, piping hot without burning me, and the ganache was high cacao heaven.
It's been many years since I visited a place that literally got EVERYTHING perfect like this on first go. And that they did it while the wife was treating me for my birthday and made an already lovely evening with her next-level?
I will definitely be coming back sooner than later and I cannot recommend these guys enough. Also the mill itself has a cool backstory if you like a little history with your beer and food.
These guys blew my socks off. ...

I suggest skipping fries and trying their Dill Slaw ----- omg. YUM. I could easily eat a bowl of this. My friend got the blackened chicken sandwich which she really enjoyed. She had an IPA that tasted like a summer Shandy which was lovely and I had the Black Widow cider. Hands down a really good meal. Now comes my disappointment and suggestions; so this note is for a manager or whoever does the menu. Your dessert menu is lack-luster. Like, really sad. For starters, the Pot de Creme was nice, love the orange zest on top. But $9 for the size you get, you have to be kidding me. At the very least, have it be the size of a coffee mug. Serving me a child size dollop of pudding that comes in a baby food jar isn't cool. We also tried the Ricotta Doughnuts... this is a hard pass. Yet again, $9 for something that isn't satisfying. You serve 6 balls with no powdered sugar and a 2 tablespoon size sauce that does nothing for this "dessert". My suggestion is ditch that old lady jam and add hot fudge instead. A side of vanilla ice cream would make it worth it. You can even remove 3 of the balls to make it decent. The doughnuts are dry, like zero moisture. It desperately needed some type of filling. So, after having an AMAZING meal, we ended the evening with these MEH desserts. Bummer. I give the place an overall 3.6 grading. Sadly, Google doesn't do half stars. It's not worthy of a 4 star rate but it is above the 3 mark. Would I return? Totally. But I'm...
Read moreI went to Big Mill for the first time today. The host was friendly. The waiter did his job, nothing more, nothing less, which was fine with me. The food was amazing. To drink had, I had the apertif sprizer, which was well balanced and muted, just as I like it. Then for appetizers we had the smoked wings and the French fries. The wings were the best I've had in Lawrence. Sooooooo succulent and smokey! Also, the blue cheese and pickled celery were amazing!!! I added the big mill sauce on the side, which added some kick. Order these! The fries were good, but the garlic aoli and parmesan kicked them up a notch. The big mill salad with the yogurt dressing was unique and very refreshing. I would have to say that the best part of the meal was the pizza! Omg! The crust was so light, and the crunchy cheese.... to die for! This is my new favorite deep dish pizza. My favorite was the exterior. The creamy ricotta on top added to the texture bazaar anfd I ended up eating the elective cold as a snack.... almost better, because the flavors had melded so well! I appreciate the well crafted recipes. Big Mill obviously has a great chef and a unique menu offering. I will be back, and I noticed the pizzas are buy 2 get 1 on Thursday evenings, I will have some friends join me one Thursday soon. Thanks for a great meal! The only thing that would have made this visit better would have been some personality in the wait staff. Just a little more communication and opinion.... but I know how hard it is to staff right now. If love to work there and...
