UPDATED REVIEW 6/16/2024: We decided to get Cafe Rio for dinner today since it’s Father’s Day and we didn’t want to cook. We aren’t happy with the new ordering system. If you order a salad, it doesn’t come with everything on it. You have to pick and choose what goes on it and you’re out of luck if you don’t remember what goes on a standard Cafe Rio salad. We always order extra meat and they never give us extra meat. This time it seemed like they actually gave us less meat and the portions are getting so small. I remember back in the day when the salads would fill the lid and we’d actually get good thick slices of lime and a heaping scoop of guacamole. The salads are so small now that they could use a flat lid for the to-go containers instead of the tall lids. I will say that tried a bowl and I really liked it. I ordered the Chicken & Elotes and I was very unimpressed with the size when I first saw it, but I ended up feeling full after eating only half of it. The flavor was on point and I think I’d order another one in the future. Flavor is still good, but I’m not happy with the portion sizes getting smaller. It’s frustrating. UPDATED REVIEW 12/24/2023: I haven't been impressed with this location lately. We called Cafe Rio on Christmas Eve to see what time they closed. They said 8:00pm, so we made sure to put in our order at least an hour before closing (6:55pm). Our order was supposed to be ready at 7:10, but it wasn't ready until 7:27. We stood there for at least 15 minutes before someone even spoke to us. I'm not sure why our order was so late because they weren't very busy. Right after we walked in at 7:10, one of the employees locked the main doors and then put a note on the other door that said "we are closed because it is 24. No enter." A few people walked in right after he put up the sign (which he shouldn't have put up yet) and he got mad at them and kicked them out. Another employee spoke to him in Spanish and told him he shouldn't do that because of the cameras. He didn't seem to care though. The food and service at this location has definitely gone downhill. ORIGINAL REVIEW 2021: Delicious! We had this for our Christmas Eve dinner. I had the sweet pork quesadilla on a wheat tortilla, my boyfriend had the sweet pork burrito smothered in sauce (with habanero sauce on the side), my oldest had the chicken salad, and my youngest had the chicken quesadilla. All of us loved our food. I usually always get the red sauce (hot), but I think I’m going to get habanero from here on out. It was sooo good and not too hot at all. We placed our order to go. When we got there, it was all ready for us and sitting on the counter. We were in and out in less than 3 minutes. We love cafe rio and will be back soon.

My family and I frequent cafe rio often, we love the food however service recently has taken a turn downhill. We ordered online from the layton location and when the order was brought back home we realized several of the salads were wrong. Specifically I had ordered a veggie salad with no cilantro. The salad I got had cilantro on it and was missing the pico, tortilla strips, and only had one scoop of guac (the veggie salad typically comes with two scoops). I had also specifically ordered the tortilla with melted cheese to help the tortilla from getting soggy. The salad however came with the cheese on top of the rice and beans not protecting the tortilla from getting soggy at all. We also had orders 2 large tortillas on the side and instead they swapped them and gave us 4 small tortillas. We specifically wanted the large tortillas. Where they redeemed themselves was when we called the general cafe rio number and they gave us a credit to go back and get it fixed. We returned to the store and without telling any of the employees what had happened and why we were back we ordered, this time in person. I was amazed to see the difference in ordering in person vs online. In person they made it correctly and I had no issues (I never told any of the employees in person I was coming back to get it fixed from their original mistakes). But also the amount of lettuce between the two salads amazed me. The salad I ordered online (pictured on the left in the photos) was skimpy and kinda sad looking. The salad I ordered in person (pictured on the right) was what I remember as a typical cafe rio salad. Ultimately I do love cafe rio and would return. However maybe not to that location AND I recommend ordering in person and not online, I frequently have issues when ordering online. They did fix their mistakes and I greatly appreciate it. I hope in the future they train their staff better on online orders so they can give customers an equally good experience whether in person or online.

I love this restaurant. The sweet pork barbacoa salad is hands-down my favorite thing. I love the dining experience and it feels really at home when you go. I am giving them a bad review though at this location, because this is the third time that I paid for extra meat, but I don't get it. This issue has happened before and they just say that they're sorry. Even the manager has asked me to have them put the meat on the side, so I know I'm getting it. With all the virus issues going on right now, I did a curbside pickup. I had to place the order online and there was no way that I could ask for the meat on the side, so I called. The individual stated they couldn't get ahold of the store, but I could ask them to remake it when I get there. When I arrived, I nicely asked if they were 100% sure that I got double meat with my order. The first gentleman that was at my car said he did not see it on the ticket. Another gentleman came up to my car and I showed them that I paid for double meat [for 2 salads), so the other gentleman said if it was on the ticket that it should be in the salad. I told them that I had had an issue before and I didn't want to risk it. They said that they know the people making the salads would see it and to not worry. I came home and I dumped my salad into a large salad bowl. I measured out the meat for 1 of the salads and I used 1/3 cup measuring tool. It was above the line, so double meat is only about a 1/2 cup? I don't think so. I paid $2.00 extra each salad for double meat and it's not the first time I didn't get it. It is frustrating and it makes me angry that my pickup orders can never be quality like my dining experiences. You guys need to get your act together and assure your customers that they get what they pay for. Very disappointed again!

If I could give no stars, I would. Cafe Rio has great food, which is why I wish so much I could use them for work functions where lunch is provided. Unfortunately, under no circumstances should you EVER rely upon their catering service to arrive on time, with the correct order, or even at all! I ordered twice from Cafe Rio and both times the driver was late and the order was wrong. So I quit using them. Then a couple of weeks ago I got a phone call from someone in catering asking why I hadn't used them in quite some time and had something gone wrong. I was very honest with him and said that yes, something had gone wrong. Orders were late and wrong and I needed work orders to be right and on time. He asked that we give them another chance because they were working on improving their catering service and he'd appreciate it if we would try them again. So I did. I had a meeting scheduled for the following Monday and needed to have lunch delivered for approximately 20 people. That was a mistake. I should have been paying better attention to the clock when meeting time rolled around but had been busy with work and realized too late that it was 30 minutes past the time when they said they would be set up and ready to go. I called the catering number and was told that the order had left the store but they couldn't locate the driver. By this time it was 45 minutes late and I suggested they contact the police since this driver had been missing close to an hour (should've been a 7-8 minute drive to deliver to my workplace from the Layton store). She very kindly offered to keep trying to reach the driver, but in the end was unsuccessful. I quickly went to plan B, which was to contact Cutler's Deli in Layton, who came through for us in a fabulous way (had lunch ready in 30 minutes)! Lesson learned and relearned. DON'T USE CAFE RIO CATERING unless you don't mind late, wrong,...
