Was a bit surprised to see the hostess wearing a hoodie, a sign of the times I guess, however charging the prices they do, this seemed out of place which brings me to the food. Ordered the artichoke dip and it came with chips and cucumber. Cucumber was out of place and did not blend well with the dip at all. The dip was great- the chips made in house, a bit stale, certainly were not fresh. Ordered the filet mignon with extra shrimp, so a $55 dollar plate. The steak had no discernable seasoning and I had to salt and pepper it extensively bite by bite to get flavor. It was tender, just completely unseasoned. I was asked for my preferred potato and asked for a baked- they didn't have any. The appropriate question would have been, "would you like fries or mash" since that's all they offered. Fries were great & the first round of shrimp was great. Husband had mash, that was terrible- texture, taste & appearance. Even though we ordered the same plate, his came with cole slaw mixed with broccoli - an odd combination for sure, but mine only had slaw on a fried flat wonton- no broccoli. Both our slaws were saturated with an Asian dressing- so Asian, I forgot I ordered steak and fries. It just didn't flow with the plate- it had no business being on the plate. The slaw was unpalatable, and we both left it on the plate. Husband also ordered the lobster plate- wood fired. How does one ruin lobster? By saturating it in oil. On the plate was rice, and that dang slaw again. The lobster was covered in small tomatoes and other veg, but it was all saturated in oil. The lobsters sweet flavor was destroyed by the excess flavoring coming from the stir-fry like tomato addition and the plate pooled with oil ruining the rice and the veg. We ate the lobster after using a napkin or 3 to soak up what we could on it, but the rest was inedible. When the server came to collect the plates, I pointed out we ate the lobster, but the oil in the plate was so much it ruined everything else. Biting a tomato left a greasy slick feeling in your mouth and I had to spit it into a napkin. She said it was butter. It was orange oil, likely from the stir-fried veg, but offered no apology or even a tiny discount for an entire plate of inedible food. I ordered an extra four shrimp at this point because as mentioned, those were great. What came back was 4 shrimp on a skewer balanced on the plate. Under the shrimp was the same oil that was on the lobster plate. This oil wasn't on the first order of shrimp and it felt as if the server told the chef of our complaint and the chef added the oil to the plate feeling offended- and I say this because it had no business in the plate, proven by my first order being without. Thankfully , the shrimp was balanced just so that it didn't touch the oil, so we were able to eat that, but remarked how odd it was for a chef to load a plate with orange greasy oil. My tea was refilled repeatedly and that was great. Dessert- we ordered the creme brulee. It physically looked like creme brulee, but on top was plain whip- no sweetener at all, might as well just blend up whipping cream. It was bland, added nothing. The sugar topping was hard as expected, but the burned black charred pieces were an unwanted surprise. Flavor in general lacked and I stopped eating after only a few bites. Overall, there were parts that were good, but overwhelmingly, we were both disappointed. The bonus was that we were not paying with our hard earned cash, we had received a gift card, so it took the sting out of it a bit, but it would have been wonderful to have a full meal that was on point, and it just didn't happen. This was supposed to be an exciting dinner for our 17th anniversary and it just fell flat with greasy food, odd textures, flat flavors and competing flavors that just didn't belong. It was $215.50 of mediocrity and I know they...
Read moreTwo of us showed up at 7pm on Saturday, February 22, 2020 to an overflowing entry area. The Newport Wine Festival is this weekend so that would explain the crowd. Kyllo's does not accept reservations as it is first come, first served. However, if you are a bigger party, I'd say 5 or more, you will be given priority over the couples. We were told the wait would be 35 minutes so we decided to wait. An hour+ later, we were seated in a booth which was greatly appreciated. 🤗
The ambiance was welcoming and the waithelp polite. We knew what we wanted so we ordered our meal the same time we ordered our drinks. Much time had passed with only water on the table, yet we noticed everyone else getting bread baskets. We never got one and felt gypped. 🤨
Our dinner arrived with our bar drinks which was kind of a bummer. It would've been nice to have our drinks first instead of having to wait until the entres were done to be brought out all at the same time.
We ordered the halibut fish and chips and the blackened salmon king crab hazelnut salad. Both were very tasty and expertly prepared. Fries were hot and crispy and seasoned perfectly, and the halibut moist on the inside and crunchy on the outside. Not oily at all, which tends to be a problem with fish and chips at some establishments. Strangely though, the fish and chips were not offered with malt vinegar, just tarter sauce. We had to wait at least 10 minutes for the waiter to come back to check on us so we could ask for the vinegar.
The salmon portion in the salad was generous. Slightly overcooked but seasoned well, and the salad dressing nicely distributed in the salad. Not overdressed at all.
Overall, the experience was good but could've been better.
On a side note, google maps says the restaurant closes at 8, which it normally does, if there are no customers. We didn't get seated until after 8pm, so closing depends on the crowd.
7/18/22 Update
Came in for lunch and had their cheeseburger and chicken club sandwich, both excellent. The beef patty could've used some seasoning, but it was still delicious nonetheless. The fries were top notch! They were steak fries, but thinly cut so they were crispy and well seasoned.
We arrived around 1230pm on a Monday afternoon and was seated promptly. On our way out, there was about a 15-20 minute wait to be seated.
The waitstaff was very personable and attentive. Our glasses were always full and they made sure to check with us if everything was okay, and if we needed anything. Overall, a...

Do not fail to try a Beach Street Mai Tai! (Hurry-- they're getting expensive -- but worth it! (second price increase in a year as of January 2025) -- I passed along a WTF to the owner ;)
Update... Yep, still great. 🍹🍹 Tried the D River Burger for the first time. Whoa! Practice stretching out your mouth first.
Summer 2024 update... The always great calamari has been revised, removing the banana peppers. Not an improvement. Please bring the old recipe back!! (...and bring back our beloved sesame chicken salad, which is outstanding). Later summer update...They've modified the calamari a few times, and it's better, but not as good as a few years back. Meanwhile, the Rooster and Pig and Italia pizzas are fantastic.
11/24 update... Really enjoyed the blackened salmon with tequila lime shrimp. Definitely one of my faves.
Random spring 2025 update to announce that I finally tried the Hal Mac (seared halibut with crab meat and macadamias over mashed potatoes with green beans), and it's likely the best thing on the menu. Yes kicking myself for failing to order years earlier. Pro tip: the "Baby Mac" portion is just right👍🏻
One quick late summer 2025 compliment... We dined last night with family and had enough people to trigger the 20% auto-gratuity. We're typically dining as a couple, so it's something we didn't really consider. The waiter correctly circled the gratuity on the check, but I just handed him a credit card and didn't look at it. Not knowing about the "auto-grat", I added a healthy tip for great service, but looking at the receipt the next morning we realized my mistake. I drove over just prior to opening to point out my error, and was told that they had not charged my added gratuity -- assuming that I did not intend to double tip. The integrity of the staff remains excellent, and we will continue to fine at Kyllo's as much as possible.
A few more notes...
• We are still dying for the return of the sesame chicken salad. PLEASE!!! 🙏🏻
• We have been all over Hawaii and tried nearly every famous mai tai, and quite honestly none are better than the Kyllo's Beach Street Mai Tai.
• Finally, there really is no reason to now charge for the warm baguette and whipped butter that was for years brought as a complimentary amuse-bouche. Loss leaders can bring hefty returns...
