The ambiance is that of a high end boutique Chicago steakhouse. the food is American with the flair of a talented chef.
We live a block away and go to JTK frequently. Why? It is close. It is classy with white table cloths, top quality table and glass ware, warm colors and has excellent fare along with affordable prices if you pay attention to what you order. .
The food at lunch is unique and very good. I particular like the Wagu beef burger. It is delicious. Wagu beef is particularly flavorful and usually expensive. That is not the case here, at least for what you get. The bun is one of the best I have had, maybe the best and the fixing options are made in-house giving a further distinctive taste. Most of the 5 burger options are $8.50 to $9.50.. Fries are extra. I recall $3.50.
But JTK at lunch is not just a burger place. the menu includes entree salads, and lunch mains including steak pommes frites and grilled salmon. Both very good.
it is a quiet place for conversation. It is a place to talk.
The chairs are padded, large and comfortable.
It has very professional attentive service that is rarely rushed.
At dinner there is an entirely different menu, in fact two menus. One is a la carte. The other we like is the the "date night" special offered every night.. for Under $50 you get one appetizer to share, a soup or salad each, 2 mains from a special menu of 6 to 8 items and a generous dessert to share. I particularly like the blueberry bread pudding.
The wine option bottle for about $10 more is not great. if you want wine, pay a bit more and go to the regular wine list that is quite good.
What could be better? For one thing, the descriptions on the menu. given the unique tastes offered, they do not tell you well enough what they deliver. But you can and should ask the waiter.
A rare surprise was what a group of 8 got for a cheese plate to share at $15. Pitifully little cheese for the price. it was explained that the cheeses were rare expensive morsels. They could have said that and more on the menu.
Their special steak Wagu beef again is very expensive, but the price is never stated unless you ask. i think the price is too high and hiding the price is a marketing mistake. Unless they are on a generous expense account whoever orders the 8 oz Wagu Steak at $60 may not be a happy customer when the bill is delivered.
The name of the restaurant and signage does not help. it has been in Lincoln for more than a decade but it is not top of mind for nearly anyone. It is for me. It is close. I like it. I like the lead...
Read moreI went with my boyfriend's family for my birthday on a Saturday night. Our reservation was for 7:30 pm and the place was pretty busy when we got there. After about 45 minutes the place was pretty much empty and remained so until we left around 10. Odd I feel for a Saturday night in the Haymarket. We knew our server so that made the experience one star better than I would have given. The couple I was with ordered the date night menu which was "average". The kobe beef burger and atlantic salmon (date menu items) were good but nothing special. I ordered the jumbo scallop meal (the whole reason I wanted to go to JTK) and was told that the scallops were available, but none of the complimentary items for that particular meal were available. BUMMER. I then asked if I could get the duck confit with 2 scallops on the side. I ordered the duck confit next but that was also unavailable. DOUBLE BUMMER. So then, I went with my THIRD choice meal. The Sole Florentine. I'm not a huge fish fan but thought I'd give it a try. The sole was ok, a bit dry. It was better with the spinach/cream cheese florentine but that was so heavy I could barely eat half of my meal. It was literally just cream cheese mixed with spinach, slathered on top of the fish. Very underwhelming. The side scallops were pretty delicious. Maybe just a tad overcooked but definitely yum! We ordered the blueberry bread pudding and pumpkin spice cake which were the best parts of the meal. Also, the "Road Less Traveled" red wine and Moscow Mules were very tasty. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this for a "fine dining" experience, especially since menu items were completely unavailable. I would, however, recommend stopping...
Read moreBig on image, small on delivery. Bottom line: Average steakhouse. The Hyatt front desk referred me to JTK when I asked for a nice, upscale steakhouse. Walking up, there was a fantastic private room just outside the entry, with wine bottles all around. The receptionist was pleasant and seated me quickly without a reservation. The decor was smart, and there was definitely a wine theme going on which gave the impression of a high-end experience awaiting me. Unfortunately, my waitress didn’t know much about wine, decorum, or even the menu. At $70 for an 8 oz steak, the Waygu Filet was presented as the flagship steak. Alternatively the ribeye was #2 at $35, and was said to be “much larger”. I asked if it was a “Prime” or “Choice” cut, and she did not know, but another waitress who overheard said yes, it was Prime. In my mind, a prime Nebraska corn-fed beef ribeye at half the price of the Waygu was the best choice. Unfortunately, the steak served was an obvious Choice cut, dense, chewey, boring. It was properly served medium rare, but clearly not the tasty highly marbled Prime steak that I normally enjoy at home. The asparagus was dry and old, poorly cooked, but the risotto was fantastic, and the highlight of the meal was the creme brûlée, which was other-worldly. Don’t go to JTK thinking that it will be extraordinary. Eyes wide open says it is just another average steakhouse, but do...
