Absolutely a winner of the first plate club. And this is at least my third time going. I should have posted after the first time 🙂
We all know there's a lot of Chinese restaurants in town. And it's definitely hard to find any that are drastically different from the next. However, John Holly's is absolutely one of those locations.
I would say the ambiance and decor is pretty close to most of the locations that you go to. However, it is very clean and the layout of tables is very nice and roomy. I will say it's not very large though, so if Friday or Saturday night is definitely going to be packed.
As with all my reviews, the reason that this gets a first plate club award is the food. When I go to a Chinese restaurant, I always let their sesame chicken be the determination of whether or not I think it's a decent restaurant. At least for me, of course because that's my favorite dish.
Trick is, they don't really have sesame chicken on the menu. They have John Holly's chicken which is their version of it. And let me tell you, this sesame chicken puts all others to shame.
The best thing about it is that they've decided to coat it in sesame seeds as well. One of the things that I always dislike about a lot of restaurants is that it seems like it just had some sesame seeds sprinkled on top. This is nothing like that. It's absolutely teeming with sesame seeds. And the portion size is more than enough to enjoy it at the restaurant and have leftovers.
If sesame chicken isn't your jammed and I highly recommend the green bean chicken. It's fresh green beans and there's a ton of them.
They also have sushi as well and the drinks are delicious. Overall, it's one of my new favorite places in the area and I look forward to the opportunities...
Read moreWe have periodically enjoyed John Holly's Asian Bistro in Lone Tree for years (always in the dining room). Unfortunately, after an experience this evening, I'm worried about how things are going there. I ordered dinner tonight for takeout with 2 appetizers, a soup, 2 fried rice dishes and 3 main courses (sizable order), and somehow we did not receive on of our main courses. After dinner, I called, just to let them know (really just wanting them to be aware - an apology would have been appreciated as my family was disappointed). I thought perhaps they could give us a credit for another time. The manager was put on the phone after I told the person who answered the phone what happened. The first person I spoke to insisted that the packer had put it in. Well, we didn't have it. So, I let them know that we just didn't receive it - there must have been a mistake. The manager was then put on the phone, and he let me know that there are lots of dishonest people. I asked if he was suggesting that I was dishonest and he went on to say that they had only made that item once, and we must have received it. Without listening to me and how I was just trying to help them realize that a mistake may have been made, he continued providing all of the reasons that he didn't believe me. Well, the experience was disappointing, and for $13, I think we'll have to find a new Asian restaurant. This is my first negative review - I don't like to criticize, especially at this time, but this manager was unbelievably difficult and I didn't get what we paid for. Hope someone else enjoyed our chow mein, and that others are having a...
Read moreWe used to come here A Lot, but after John Holly sold it, my parents decided not to come again. I however did. I have an extensive background in the restaurant industry and personally have always had issues with the waitstaff and their training here. Well, that hasn't changed. Still got the Village Inn style of service but the food has remained solid. First things first, I walked in around 8:30pm, nobody was at the door. The guy behind the sushi counter (Later came to know him as Fish 😃) greeted me and I asked to sit at the sushi bar counter. He immediately said yes and set me up for service and a glass of water. So far so good imo. Then a server came over after a few mins and wasn't very personable. I was already ready to order and she took the order; some sushi and saki. She eventually got around to bringing me the hot saki but after some time. Maybe she was busy, idk. Fish provided the sashimi and sushi I ordered and I was very pleased with his service, attentiveness and the food. Honestly, my experience would have been better without the waitress. Fish took care of me from the beginning, set me up for service, made the food, checked up on me afterwards and delivered the pineapple "dessert" at the end. I think Fish deserves a raise and should give pointers to whoever trains the waitstaff. I was happy with my experience but still wondering what is and has been wrong with your waitstaff training for many years...
