It was a bit too salty and the flavors didn’t seem to blend well. One big example of this was the tuna shiso plate. The tuna was rather thin but then drenched in a very large amount of sesame oil and a salty liquid. It felt a bit like drinking a bottle of soy sauce mixed with sesame oil. I felt many of the dishes we had were too salty and/or overpowering in one element. In contrast, I felt the flavors at the Bixby location were very well balanced with the fish seeming fresher too. I also liked the smoky charred elements and balancing of textures at the Bixby location, two other elements that the Belmont location was lacking.
The service was also a bit meh. We were greeted and seated right away which was awesome. Usually, the waiter then comes within the first five minutes to greet themselves and ask for drink requests. It seemed like we waited about 15 minutes for our waiter to come, by which time we were already ready to order. Our waiter also did not check in on us during our meal and we didn’t see him again until the end of our meal. Water came out fast; food too came fairly quickly.
One dish came out with an allergen which we had told our waiter we need removed. Fortunately, it was remade and subsequent dishes all came out correctly. In terms of service, overall nothing terrible, just several points were a contrast to the service we received at the Bixby location and most restaurants in general. I’ve been to each location only once, but as of now I’d also say the Bixby location is much better in...
Read moreA fresh (to me) take on sushi that adds Peruvian flavors and spices. It's really good! We tried hamachi tostadas, tuna tacos, tuna power, Asian shiromi, and the Oba roll. Everything came out beautifully crafted. I enjoyed unexpected flavors like oregano (I think!) and others. The atmosphere is upscale; we spent about $50/person (plus the tip). I would say the quality of the food supports the prices! Two things to note: something like 8 of 11 rolls on the menu have shellfish (and one of the remaining three is veggie), so if you have a shellfish allergy like me be prepared for limited options. I was also surprised they didn't offer more beverage variety like chicha mirada (the one non-US non-alcoholic drink was Inka cola). All in all, though, this is a fantastic restaurant and a great spot for...
Read moreSushi Nikkei is my favorite restaurant in Long Beach and I was very excited to try their new location in Belmont Shore on the first night. The menu is the same as the Bixby Knolls restaurant and I ordered my usual lineup (grilled scallops, ceviche, Sushi Nikkei tasting, and toro) plus more since it was my friend’s first time. We enjoyed everything immensely and my friend said it will be hard trying any other spot in LB when she visits since she will always want Sushi Nikkei. Now we have two spots to choose from. Daiwa and Eduardo did a great job renovating the space. Their team works well together and it was nice to see familiar faces and a restaurant full of people. Kudos to them for providing a community where you feel like family and get to enjoy fresh high quality sushi at...
