✈️ Airport Eats Special | The Culinary Desert of LAX Terminal

On April 9, 2023 at approximately 6:45A before my partner and I arrived at our gate, we decided to grab a quick breakfast from Cali pizza kitchen. The cashiers and manager were absolutely wonderful, however the server/host on duty (Rosie) turned our experience into a sour one. After we ordered we stepped to the side to sit our waters and things on the host stand temporarily only to be harassed by Rosie to inform us that we had to move our things. There was no line at all at the host stand and the sitting area was only to be used by guests who were dining in. Rosie had a terrible attitude and decided to return to the kitchen to speak poorly about us to another worker. She then proceeded to come to the front to tell the other workers loudly and aggressively that they needed to tell customers that the sitting area was only for guests who were dining in (keep in mind that we never requested to sit in that area. It felt as though Rosie was attempting to belittle us when we informed her that the cashiers had already provided that information. We then requested a full refund of everything because I’d rather not spend my money somewhere where we are harassed for making a small stop to gather our belongings since our hands were full. I fly through LAX often and will NEVER give another cent to California pizza kitchen (located at T1). A word of advice that can taken as an development opportunity is to have more empathy and consideration for your customers who are paying high end prices for breakfast burritos, water, and coffee. I will also be sending an email to the guest services to escalate this issue further.

We enjoyed our meal here. The food was good overall, but the service was next-level. Our server was fantastic! I ordered the burger after they had no bread so I couldn't order the club sandwich, and when the burger came it had no mustard on it (because they normally do a "secret sauce"). I asked the server for some and they didn't have any, so do you know what she did? She went over to Habit Burger to get some mustard! How amazing is that? I have to deduct an overall star though for the prices: they are outrageous, even by airport standards. $20 for a small 10" pizza? Our bill for three entrees, one side salad, and four pops was $102...!?! Part of that is the mandatory 20% service charge for all visits, no matter how small the party. I haven't seen that before, and given the hourly wage in California is probably decent, it seems a bit much to make 20% mandatory. The server though was wonderful again, she skipped past the extra tip prompt (yes, they ask for a tip beyond the 20%).

On 4/9/23 at approximately 6:30 AM while at LAX, my husband and I decided to grab breakfast at California Pizza Kitchen-T1. We placed our order ($52.79) and the cashier advised us that we had a wait time of ten minutes. The cashier instructed us to wait over to the left side while our order was being prepared. We relocated to the left side of the restaurant, just outside of the seating area near the host stand. While waiting, we were approached by a server, later identified as “Rosey” at which time she asked us if we needed help with something. We told her no and that we were waiting on our order that was just placed. Rosey stated “ well you can’t wait here.” We couldn’t understand how us waiting for our food at the restaurant that we just ordered food from was an issue. Either way, we moved away from the area because it is extremely early and didn’t feel like pressing the issue. Moments later our order was ready and we proceeded back to order pick up area. Rosey then follows us up to counter. While getting our food, she loudly scolds the cashier saying “when they place their order, they do not need to waiter in my area!” I then tell her that it was no reason for you to follow us over here to pick up our food and tell us where not to wait in an airport. We were not in a restricted area or the restaurants seating space. It was very harassing, rude and unprofessional. As a paying customer, I was uncomfortable with the service experience and demanded a full refund due to the actions of the server Rosey. The cashier went to the back to notify the manager that I returned all the food and wanted a refund. The manger, David Z (1190153) comes out to process the refund. We then asked for the server’s name so that we can write a complaint. The manager then processes the refund but did not bother to address our complaint regarding the server.

First, CPK has a good customer service and somewhat fairly rated in restaurants. Second, Google reviews are actually generous compared to Yelp. If you have bad review on Google, that’s really bad. Customer service is non-existent at this location at the airport.

I sat at the bar. These two people in my attached photo are too busy chitchatting that I waited for 10 minutes and nobody even offered a menu! So, I went to the “to-go order kiosk” and ordered my food instead and sat back at the bar. He comes to me and finally offered me a menu. I said, “I already placed an order because no one helped me.” He gave me this lecture that if I sit at the bar he’s going to charge me 20% gratuity. Instead of saying I’m sorry blah blah blah he gave me lecture. So, I decided to get up and take my food to go instead and not eat there.

This is an airport! Nobody has time to wait 10 minutes because you’re too busy talking to each other. People have places to go. The plane is not going to wait for me or us because of the incompetence of these “marooons” who are only there to get paid and NOT help customers. From my experience of traveling these people that works at airport restaurants are working on their own terms. This is no different than those people.

To be honest, this boils down to management. They are just as incompetent as the workers. Kind of sad because California pizza kitchen has a fairly...
