Hill City Pub — Restaurant in Lynchburg

I don’t usually do reviews as a gm of a restaurant and bar I know what it’s like but this is a well needed. We entered the establishment not sure what to and finally discovered the sign turned sideways and said seat yourself. While the bartenders just stair at ya. Then we decided to sit at the first bar in front of the main door. We take our seat and the bartender said do you need a menu? I responded yes it’s our first time. She laid the menus down and walked off . After 10 mins or so she standing at computer looking at us not once asking if we are ready or suggesting nothing just a stare. Even after we have laid the menus down then I said we are ready to order. The next response is ok! Note she is quit a distance away from us trying to take a order at the point of sale and not coming over to us I stated again we are ready to order and she snapped her head around and said ok what you want? Started to tell her the drink and she said what several times then I just stopped talking and then she walked over and we told her what drinks we wanted. She then went back and had to look at menu to see what and how it’s made then made the drinks and dropped them off and proceeded to clean and closing stuff this is around 7:45. So 15 20 mins go by and we still have menus sitting closed waiting on her to take the order as she stared at us numerous times and still not bothered to get food order or ask how is the drinks or anything as I haven’t even touched mine. Finally after thirty mins I said can I get my check since we can’t order food. She was like ok. Prints check drops it in front me and walks off. Then I put cash on. Board and she grabs it cashes it out and brings change back drops it on counter and walks off. Not once saying thank you come back or. Nothing. As we watch several other people leave she was like have a good night we noticed it was only the men that was alone. She did not speak to anyone with someone. Very cold and dry to us and was not interested in selling us anything. And very unprofessional dressed for a restaurant and bar. Spaghetti strap shirt no bra shirt did not fit correctly. Armpits and everything showing. If they dressed like that then how is kitchen dressed. I then asked to speak to a manager a guy named Woody came out and asked what was wrong. I then explained to him what happen and his response was I will have a talk with her. I then said it was like she had a problem because we was two males sitting together. Is there a problem with this? As the other bar on the other side of the room was full. Even that bar tender made eye contact but never said anything but she was not our server or person that we was dealing with . It’s clear that I will never darken the door there again. I’ve heard so much hype and good it was but this is a example with 3 tables and 10 at a bar then I would hate to see what a busy night would be like. The vibe I got was she did not like they gay men or two men that come in and sit together at the bar. Because all single men she was on point and very friendly. Very disgusted. With this total experience. As a general manager of such like place I know what it’s like and normally very laid back to this so it takes a lot to get me to ...

We visited on a rainy Tuesday evening. I will be completely honest. For my first 15 minutes this was an absolute 1 star review. I did not get waited on after sitting for 15 minutes and was almost ready to walk out but I was eventually asked for my order. Man am I glad I did not leave. The beer was great. I ordered a Narragansett and loved it so I ended up drinking 2. We ordered pickle fries, a Reuben sandwich and a cheesy western both with waffle fries. Food was out in maybe 15 minutes and was super hot and fresh off the grill. The pickle fries ended up being so good that we ordered another basket of them after devouring the first in less than a minute. The Reuben had crispy bread, warm juicy corned beef and a nice tang sauerkraut that was just absolutely amazing. The cheesy western obviously didn't compare to the original but was good in its own right. The waffle fries were perfect and delicious. The manager/lead of some kind ended up being the one to serve most of our food. He was extremely kind and definitely saved our experience.

I would recommend going here. Be ready to wait a little for them to get to you but it is well worth the wait. Very fair prices and some delicious food. Now that I know to expect the wait I won't hesitate coming again. Absolutely awesome. We only intended on spending maybe $30 but the food was so good, as was the beer, that we ordered much more than intended and were completely fine with. If we ate our original intended amount it would have been perfectly cheap...

Unfortunately, this was some of the worst service I’ve had. I’ll start with the good stuff first.

Their cornbread is out of this world. The value you get from the amount of delicious cornbread is second to none. Absolutely wonderful.

The bad - their waitresses do no attend to you at all. We were completely ignored for the first 30 minutes after sitting down. They finally took our order. When the food arrived, we asked for silverware. They said they’d bring it. 10 minutes go by and no silverware. Meanwhile we are sitting outside on a somewhat cold night with our food getting cold. Another waitress is at a table nearby and we ask her for silverware. Another 10 minutes and nothing (she brought silverware out for another table in that time). We finally had a member of our party go into the restaurant and stand at the front until someone handed us silverware. By the time we got to eat our food (roughly 25 minutes or so after it being delivered and us getting silverware), everything was just cold and inedible. For as big of an order as our group had, you would think the waitresses would actually want to help. It may have been the fact that we were the only non-white people at the restaurant. While I don’t believe that race played a part of the experience, I can’t help but think there was some discrimination for an unknown reason.

Also, don’t get their fried mushrooms. For the $6 or $7 it costs, they give you exactly 6 or 7 mushroom caps. Such a terrible value, so don’t make the same...
