I'm pretty sure I can say I've been coming here for as long as I can remember, or even starting from birth. They used to be cash only, but now there is a $10 credit minimum. The lady is very kind and will answer all your questions happily. They are very hygienic and with covid-19 going on, they are taking a lot of safety precautions and completely closed off the self-service bun shelf. The bubble tea is reasonably priced for the area for sure, you won't need to pay $6 for a drink here! The buns, cake, and egg tarts are amazing, my personal favorite is the ham and egg bun, and my sister's favorite is the fried pork bun. As a child I loved the basic hot dog bun, I have memories of coming here with my uncle when I was probably 4 or 5 and picking out buns for our family. This place is the og. I really want to see this place get as much recognition as QQ not only because it's been here longer, but because it's just as good if not better. I don't want to compare places, but I hate to see a place that deserves the business be hidden from our eyes, especially when it's so close to Oakland Mall and so many other shopping centers. It is definitely a bit of a hidden gem. We love both bakeries a lot! But if I had to pick one over the other to go to for the rest of my life, it would be Tai Pan. :)
edit: added photos. couldn't resist eating my ham and egg bun, this is the only place i know of that keeps the yolk and white separated and doesnt use a homogeneous rectangle. huge fave
update: i live in the bay area in california now and i miss this...
Read moreLove their baked goods, but I got food poisoning from their zhongzi.....sadly one time is enough to make me not go back.
I wanted to make sure it was the zhongzi that made me sick before leaving this comment, and yes, it sure was.. 6 hours after consuming their zhongzi, I had extreme pain in my stomach and intestines. Dizziness nausea and vomit and diarrhea...I'm also pregnant, so that would've been very dangerous... very disappointed at this bakery. My stomach has not been the same ever since i got food poisoning from here. I had an iron stomach, the fact that I actually got so sick from their zhongzi. Meaning that their zhongzi has gone bad a long long time ago, but they were still selling it... this really make me question their baked good as well.
I really wanted to support them as a family own business, but you just can't be selling food that you knew has gone bad a while ago.
My stomach has been having issues ever since this event.
Replying to owner: I bought it on a cool day, drove home, and immediately put it in the freezer and steamed it for dinner the day of. Exactly 6 hours later, I woke up with all the food poisoning symptoms. I'm very disappointed, you guys make great baked goods, but after this experience I'm scared...

Selection of your common Cantonese buns, both plain and with fillings such as coconut, custard, bbq pork, pineapple, red bean ... to other sorts of pastries, egg and Portuguese tarts, cakes, fried savory dumplings and white sugar sponge cake among a few more.
Review of few of the items purchased today, the custard and Danish bun, as labeled on the case.
The texture and taste of the bread is good and soft with a slight sweetness. However, there is little to no filling. What did I pay for? The custard bun is almost nonexistent. You can see a very light layer and almost hollow inside. The Danish bun top layer on the outside was flaky and flavorful but the custard inside of this one was not for me.
I would say that the the egg tarts are pretty good, as well as the fried savory dumpling 咸水角...
