My date and I were seated without a wait at approximately 2PM on a Tuesday afternoon. For just the two of us, the table for six seemed a bit much; but I suppose this was a trade off for the short wait.
One thing I noticed off the bat was a very high amount of ambient noise. The tall ceiling and the tile floor just seemed to amplify the cacophony of sound. Exchanging dishes for triple the decibels, the busser efficiently cleared the remnants of meals gone by. I found it difficult to hold a conversation just directly across the table. I wondered how the patrons with older ears could manage: I reasoned as locals, they had just learned to adapt.
The menu appeared a bit overwhelming at first, but I finally settled on a reuben while my date went for the alfredo. The food was satisfying and seasoned with all the proper flavors. I took a special liking to the various dressings that I'm told are made in-house. The Thousand Island was sweet compared to the Russian I'm partial to, but it paired with the sandwich seamlessly. Extra Ranch for the fries was a great suggestion from the missus.
The increasingly rare soda jerk styling of the beverages was a very welcome bonus. A slightly syrupy vanilla Coke proved a fantastic addition to the meal.
Staff proved friendly enough, though I usually limit my interaction.
Reconciling the currency to experience ratio of the bill seemed a bit of a stretch for a party of two with neither appetizer nor dessert; though as one of the better restaurants in the locality, I wager many are willing to pay the little extra.
All things totalled, I had a decent experience. Seated quick. Served at a respectable rate. Delicious food. Higher, but still reasonable pricing. My only major complaint is the noise: I would have loved to share more conversation with the lovely lady across from me, but the volume just inhibited that greatly.
Still, I am curious to see if the hype generated for the seasoned lettuce is merited. I'd be willing to return whenever I find myself next...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMy boyfriend grew up in this area. So we traveled to this location as he once loved it and highly recommend the food. The waiter was nice but didn't seem knowledgeable of the menu. I believed he was newly trained(understandable). Once we ordered our food, it took nearly 45 minutes to arrive. Now, customers who arrived much later than us received their food before us. Ours was not complicated. I ordered the lasagna. My daughter ordered a salad with a piece of salmon. My boyfriend ordered a roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy. When the food came to the table, the scales were tipped. The lasagna was served in a small baking dish. Barely layered as it should be. It was clearly not baked, hardly any sauce, no ricotta cheese(though that may be my fault as I'm not sure if they make it with that), but it was microwaved! The roast beef sandwich was also microwaved and didn't come with mashed potatoes but fries. When the server came around, my boyfriend asked for his mashed potatoes. When they came. They were instant potatoes microwaved. My daughters salad did appear ok until she began to cut into the salmon, and the underside had its skin attached. Our drinks were empty 90% of the time being refilled once. As I stated earlier, I realized that the waiter was most likely new and would not take the food quality out on him. He got tipped out. However, what this place is asking in price for what we got served is asinine. Maybe it used to be a place of quality and family and had standards but as someone who used to work as a server/bartender and knows what should be getting served to people. Your establishment ought...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreSo I find myself in Western Maryland to do a little volunteer work and ask my host for a good breakfast recommendation. She said go to D'Atri's -- that's where the locals eat. So my wife and I head there and true to her word the place was filled with locals and for GOOD reason -- The food there was great! The menu had a large number of your traditional breakfast selections as well as some daily specials. I tried a traditional omelet and my wife had bacon and eggs -- both were prepared well and delicious. However, what really helped set D'Atri's apart was their biscuits. Oh my -- HUGE and very very tasty. What made it harder was when we left to pay the bill it took us right by their pastry counter which offered even MORE great looking baked goods. We left with full stomachs hoping we would get another opportunity to visit D'Atri's again.
Well as luck would have it there was a huge snow storm after I left that wiped out the work I had completed. I just said to myself awww shucks I guess I'll have to go up again -- it was a 168 mile drive but I knew I could look forward to another great breakfast and that helped make the trip worthwhile. And of course my wife, not involved with the work at all, also wanted to tag along -- just for the breakfast. There is no better...
