The Sunrise Cafe in Memphis is a great local find and worth heading to (obviously if you’re a local and perhaps not so obviously if you’re a visitor as it’s not quite on the beaten path. But it’s not far from Sun Studios so it’d be a great breakfast/brunch stop if you were headed there afterwards. It’s an order at the counter, seat yourself kind of place. Restaurants that serve biscuits, live or die (in my mind) based on the quality of the biscuit. In this case, Sunrise Cafe should live forever. Their biscuits are legitimate southern biscuits, served with some pre-set sandwich choice, or you can roll your own. I rolled my own and had a biscuit with egg whites, cheddar and tabasco honey. The biscuit was fluffy and super good. The tabasco honey it was served with was a perfectly and unique treat – sweet with just the right amount of kick. I also had a side of hash browns which were among the best I’ve had. They were thick with tender potatoes on the inside and exactly the right amount of crisp on the outside, all served without being too greasy. they were perfect and, a couple months later while writing this, I’m kind of salivating thinking about them. The only area for improvement, in my experience, was the coffee. They serve “Onyx” dark and light coffee (serve yourself in a mug they give you). I had the dark. On the website it’s described as highly caffeinated which excited me as someone who typically drinks Death Wish Coffee. This was slightly better than standard diner coffee, perhaps a little thin for my taste, but much better than the brown waters I’ve received at other diners all over America. They also offer a coconut bacon (vegetarian), but they happened to be out of it when we were there so I can’t tell you whether or not it’s good, but it’s cool that there’s a veggie “meat” option. The dining room is a spacious, nice and comfortable place to eat. It’s nicely decorated with local art and lots of colors. (Though our first seat choice was on a cushioned bench…the cushions probably need to be, err, re-cushioned, as I sank deep into it and was concerned I might sink so low as to enter the bowels of Memphis. So we moved to a table with chairs. My wife (a gluten-free eater) had the oatmeal made with milk, peanut butter and banana. (We were headed to Graceland so this was her breakfast tribute to Elvis.) Her initial reaction was that there wasn’t enough peanut butter, but she kept eating it and said it seemed fine, especially after she added almonds and honey. The milk she added, by the way, was almond milk (My wife generally avoids dairy as well) and she was happy they had this nut milk as an option. This oatmeal was the dish that the coconut bacon would’ve come on and that would’ve theoretically elevated the dish to a point where she would have been more excited about it. They have a limited hot tea selection. Breakfast is served all day. Lunch is added in starting at 11.

I was debating on whether or not to post this, but I think it would be helpful to those wanting to try out Sunrise. The food itself was not bad. My yogi bowls strawberries were not good (some were browning and mushy), but the blueberries and granola was excellent. My parents enjoyed their food thoroughly as well. The problem arises when I was leaving. I got to my car and noticed a huge dent. It was from a door that was no properly closed and kept swinging (as it was a very windy day) and hitting my car. I went inside to inform the manager as there was a sign on the door that said to keep it closed at all times. The manager was extremely rude and condescending. Kept saying it "obviously" was not a parking spot and there was "obviously" a dumpster there. I have attached photos of where I was parked. As you can see, not only was there another person parked there (which she even said was an employee!) but there were no signs and the dumpster was not noticeable at all. I did not expect them to pay for the full damages, nor did I mention anything about money. I just wanted an apology or some recognition that there was an issue with their parking lot. Instead I was passive aggressively told that it was not even a parking spot and the woman implied I was stupid for even parking there. Words like "obviously" and "most people would know" were used a lot. I do understand needing to protect one's business, but the manner in which this experience happened was not impressive and left me disappointed.

I'm glad I made my way to Sunrise Memphis during my trip to Memphis. They offer amazing food and great service with laid-back, welcoming vibe. Here are some highlights: Environment Sunrise Memphis has plenty of character and local charm. The space is decorated with art, photos and memorabilia that lets you know that you're in Memphis giving it a warm and local feel. There's plenty of seating both inside and on the patio, plus a counter area for dining or drinks. I loved the decor. Service Ordering here is simple and efficient: you line up at the counter, place your order, then they give you a ticket number before finding a seat in the dining area. Once your food is ready, they bring it to your table. The staff at the counter was friendly, and the service was quick and smooth. It was a welcoming atmosphere with friendly service. Food The food was delicious and I wanted to try everything on the menu. I ordered the pancakes, eggs with cheese, grits and hash browns - all were tasty and filling. The pancakes were warm and fluffy, the grits creamy and savory and everything complimented each other well. I would love to go back and explore more. Overall I had a wonderful time at Sunrise and can't wait to return to try more off their menu. From the great space to the ease of ordering to the delicious food it's a top spot in Memphis especially for breakfast. Great first stop in Memphis - I'll be back!

FINALLY got to visit Sunrise Memphis! My family and I have tried to eat here at least twice before, but it’s been so busy (On the weekends) and we didn’t want to wait with two little ones. My husband and I both had the day off, so we decided to try again. Despite going at 9:30 on a Monday, the restaurant was still very busy! This is not a complaint, but a testament to the food and restaurant. Other than the nearby hospitals, there is not a lot of foot traffic in this area, so people must be going out of their way (like us) to eat here. I had the Best Omelet and my husband ordered the Rooster. We both enjoyed our food and experience. Everything is self-serve here. The food is ordered at a counter, then brought to your table. Coffee and drinks are readily available for refills and there was a Bloody Mary bar also in the dining area. I appreciated the “no camping” sign in the dining area because I can easily see that being a problem with all of these self-serve options. All of the employees that I encountered were very friendly and helpful. I can’t wait to come here again! FYI: they have high-chairs and changing tables. There’s also a small, covered patio for outdoor seating. Heads Up: their parking lot is extremely limited. Be prepared for street parking.

It's a must try for breakfast/brunch! When we arrived the line was already outside the door with people walking up from every direction. Good sign. Wait wasn't long though. 10-15 minutes max. Make sure you look over the menu while outside. Food is ordered at the counter upon entry. Very relaxed atmosphere. You can see into the kitchen area from all angles of the restaurant. Another great sign. Staff is super friendly very polite. Time from ordering to table isn't bad either. 10-15 minutes everything is hot and fresh. We had the roster biscuit sandwich, the kitchen sink, pancake and sausage gravy.....just so we could try a little bit of everything. The roster is a must try. Chicken is fried to perfection with the spicy honey drizzle. Amazing. Biscuit is light, fluffy, moist and a perfect compliment to the chicken. The homemade sausage is another must have if you are a sausage fan. The grits, hashbrowns, pancakes and eggs were all great. Only thing that missed for me was the bacon. Price was great and didn't include this mandatory gratuity alot of places seem to have in Memphis.......I always think that's a bad sign. 40 dollars for enough food to feed 3. Again it's a must try if you're in Memphis

A place of pure Memphis. Went for breakfast. Ordered the Rooster: chicken, pickle, and Tabasco honey sauce. Memphis AF. Might sound odd, but it really works. Dense, flaky biscuit. Grits are larger grit closer to the texture of oatmeal and somewhat dry, but quite flavorful. Great coffee, too. I love the decor--eccentric local folk art. I spotted one Larry Sorrento, and there is lots else to catch the eye. Outdoor seating, small bar, and a warm, smiling staff. Everyone had a genuine smile and seemed to love what they do. I loved this place. I've been away from Memphis a few years, and it was a joy to find this place. Hope it stays around. UPDATE: Back again! I decided to just get some typical breakfast items this time: eggs over easy, hash browns, cheese grits, and a biscuit and gravy. The BnG was that delicious, slightly sweet biscuit and some smooth, creamy gravy. The eggs were perfect. The cheese grits were also creamy and delicious. I was not disappointed. But next time, I'm going to get one of the eccentric menu items, like that Rooster mentioned above, or maybe the chorizo bowl. And I will definitely be back. A Memphis must.
