We moved here from Houston so I was pretty excited to try this place, especially the fried oysters! I thought I was going to have a go to spot for my back home cravings that was close to me. Plus my company is always looking for soul food catering so I wanted to be the official taste tester. We ordered on a third party app that charged us an overall 2 dollars extra, I don't recomend it. We got the fried seafood trio, shrimp, oysters, and catfish. It came with hush puppies and a roll with two sides. It was a dollar extra for catfish, I'm ok with that. We added mac n cheese, collard greens, red beans and rice, sweet potato pie, and 7up cake. This is enough food for 3 people. We had a 6:33 pm pick up. First thing I tried were the oysters, they were big, like gulf oysters. I prefer smaller oysters because I like to eat mine in one bite, I know most would appreciate a huge oyster. The flavor was great, I covered mine in lemon and hot sauce and I was pleased. I prefer cornmeal only breaded oysters but these were still good and crispy. I give them a 5/5. The shrimp I would give 10 out of 5. They were good alone and good with tarter. I don't think you could go wrong with these. The catfish had good flavor but I am wondering if because we had an order closer to close the grease was old, the fish was dark in color and the breading had that paste texture underneath. I might need to come in and sit down to try it fresh. I'd give it a 4/5. Hush puppies. I don't like hushpuppies in general but my husband liked them 5/5. The cornbread was good, there are so many variations of cornbread and their version was tasty. 5/5. Mac and cheese seemed a little old, flavor was good though, I bet it would be delicious fresh out the oven, 4/5. Red beans and rice, nobody's red beans and rice is better than mine so they get a 4/5 lol but it was good, great flavor and spicy. Now here is where we go down hill, the greens were so salty I could only stomach one bite. My family eats cornbread mashed in thier greens so eating it that way took away from the saltiness but I wouldn't order again. 0/5. The French fries were soggy and salt less, it tasted like bay seasoning was used and it was not good. 0/5. Now I'm not gonna lie I judged the desserts just by looking at them, that pie over is over cooked and that cake is dry, BUT that pie was delicious and not over cooked and the cake was soooo good and moist. 5/5 for both. Overall I would go back and dine in to give it a fresh out the grease try and hope they had someone else manning the green pot. Thanks for coming to menifee and adding a little flavor. Hope the kinks get worked out and they stick around. P.S. They should sell the whole sweet potato pie at Thanksgiving and the 7up cake...
Read moreMy wife has been waiting to try this place and today was that day! Now days I make it my duty to read the reviews before I come to my own conclusion. I also read how the customers are responded to after offering their opinions, it helps me too understand what type of rebuttal/atmosphere to expect. Being a business owner myself I look for overall quality. The sides were left to be desired! *The establishment was clean, which is a great thing. 5 stars. *We have zero complaints about the price point for the food. In today's economy it's refreshing to find, "bang for your buck." This establishment offers that. *DESSERT- I ordered the heath cheesecake and my wife ordered the 7up cake. They were moist and an overall treat! *SIDES- I ordered sides as my meal and my wife's meal came with sides. They were subpar. The mac & cheese tasted like black pepper and eggs. The red beans and rice was left to be desired. It put me in the mind of chili. Popeye's has better red beans and rice and I despise fastfood establishments. The yams were dry but has great potential. My wife enjoyed her hush puppies. I do not eat them therefore I have zero opinion. My creamy cheese grits were NOT creamy at ALL! *ENTREES- my wife's meal contained red snapper fish, fried shrimp, and a roll. The shrimp and fish were fried well and tasted good. I would order those items again. *CUSTOMER SERVICE - We had a large bill to pay with in which the decided not to accept. Our meal was a little over $60 I'm sure they had the difference in the register. No big deal, Sprouts gave us change. If you do not accept large bills it maybe helpful to inform your customers before hand. A sign in eye sight stating, "exact change or no large bills" would suffice. There was a young lady at the register which may have been new according to another patron. I did not get her name, but she was sweet and polite. The young lady displayed manners, patience and was attentive to the customers ( three customers in total).
Being that I have a sophisticated pallet and after reading how some of the reviewers are met with the type of rebuttals I have read, I expected the wow factor from this establishment. My opinion is mine and mine alone but I wouldn't travel again...
Read moreLet me start by saying I have been patiently waiting for this restaurant to open with enthusiasm. My families are one side from Baton Rouge and the other from Birmingham. I know southern food and I was really hoping fishbone would take me home. Not the case! I had the Cajun catfish and fried shrimp meal. First I’ll start with the 2” worm looking thing I pulled from inside the middle of my catfish. Fairly confident it wasn’t a worm of any sort I still watched it for a few minutes to make sure it didn’t move lol. Only other option is it was already dead or it’s the fish’s intestinal track. Yuk thanks for that little jewel. Please see pictures. So there’s that! Now the food. The Cajun catfish was well cooked breading was perfectly fried but the fish and breading were both under seasoned. Hardly any hint of Cajun flavor or spices, other than black pepper. The fried shrimp although lacking any sort of flavor other than corn meal was cooked very well. But obviously now I’m questioning just how well they were cleaned. Mac n cheese was unappealing to the eye but the first bite was clearly Mac n CHEESE! Plenty of delicious cheese but again it was under seasoned. And I’m not a sodium addict but it needed salt and pepper. Red beans and rice is hard to mess up but they seem to have managed by adding to much Louisiana hot sauce. Essentially the red hot sauce they serve inside the restaurant. That’s my guess as to the foreign agent in their recipe. Maybe they just want it to be their own flavor. I get that, was just hoping for authentic. And it wasn’t about it being hot more the vinegar flavor over powering the true Cajun creole flavor of red beans and rice. I mean I hate to say it but Popeyes red beans and rice truly tastes more authentic. How can that be lol. Anyway The hush puppies were dead on the money. Tasted like my grandma cooked them herself. Before the worm lol I was mildly disappointed but still thought it would be a great place to bring my mom when she’s in town. Yeah that’s not happening now lol. Here’s to finding the end trails before you...
