Tried this place for the first time going off of a friend's recommendation. This place is located in a fairly new shopping center and it is kept very clean which is good. As soon as we walked in we were greated and asked if it was our first time, which it was, and she proceeded to go over the menu which we appreciated. This place has a simple menu which consists of quesadillas, tacos, gorditas and lonches (tortas/sandwhich) which are prepared with various meats and for drinks they serve individual soda's, Mexican cola, lemonade, jaimaca and bottled beer.. What you see in the picture is a lonche of milanesa (thin meat that has been breaded) which comes with mayo, lettuce, tomato, onion and cabbage. And to the right of it is a gordita de maize with barbacoa and tomato and cabbage. For me having or even hearing of cabbage on a torta is very odd and very new to me but it was not bad especially since it was finely grated. Per the person taking our order she mentioned the bread was made fresh daily, i cant confirm this but it was very good and not to dense. The milanesa thats another thing i find odd, im used to a thin whole steak and here they slice it up into pieces and because of it i think thats the reason for the meat being cold. It also came with a side of fries which were not that great i guess because they did not have enough seasoning or crunch. The gordita as you can tell is a home made very thin shell of maize which i liked the crunch and also the fact that it stayed complete and did not break apart which is a plus. The barbacoa was ok not to flavorful. Overall service was welcoming and fast. The food was not that great especially for the price. I still say give it a try maybe it's more to your liking...
Read moreWe had planned on finding somewhere nice to eat this evening but found ourselves stuck in this area when we had to meet someone at Walmart right at rush hour. We found this place browsing Google maps and decided to go ahead and eat while traffic died down. That was a great decision.
This place is situated in a strip shopping center behind QT and looks plain on the outside but is very nice inside.
The lady at the counter switched the menu from Spanish to English for us. I almost ordered the Birria Tacos but switched to the Queso Birria when she said that shell was homemade. My wife went for the taco plate. The food was absolutely delicious. Much better than the mediocre Mexican joints that litter Louisiana where we live. The experience was enhanced by the numerous salsas we got to try. The jalapeño was my favorite.
This place is more traditional Mexican food than Tex Mex specializing in tortas & tacos.
Would I go back? I certainly would. We loved this place and it should be on any Mexican food...
Read moreVery disappointed with our visit. My husband and I decided to go here based on the reviews (mostly very good). The gentleman at the counter was very informative and told us about all of the plates. We ordered gorditas and tacos. We were surprised when the plates came out. VERY small servings, especially for the price you pay. The rice was very bland lacking condiment seasoning. The steak needed a bit more flavoring it tasted dry. The chiccarron needed salt and was very greasy. It was dripping grease when I picked up my gorrdita to eat. The salsas were very spicy but just hot, they did not really have a flavor. They claim to make their own tortillas but they tasted ordinary and again lacking salt. The food was just bland and unflavorful. The only decent thing about our visit was our aguas de Jamaica. We left with a $25 bill and only half full. This was our first and last time at Don Pepes, we do not recommend based on our...
