Indian Canteen, Milpitas — A Bollywood-Style Feast Worth the Wait

Ambience & Vibe Walk in and you’re greeted by a wall-to-wall tribute to Bollywood—bright movie posters, upbeat Hindi tunes, and on weekend nights, live musicians who turn the dining room into a mini film-set concert. Traditional low tables invite you to kick off your shoes and settle onto floor cushions, instantly adding a cozy, almost homestyle feel.

What We Ordered • Chicken Mandi – A show-stopping platter of fragrant basmati rice crowned with perfectly roasted chicken. The portion is generous (see photo!) and the spice profile leans savory-warm rather than tongue-scorching, so everyone at the table can dig in. • Mutton Curry – I rarely gamble on mutton when eating out, but this one converted me. The meat was melt-in-your-mouth tender, swimming in a rich, slow-cooked gravy that balanced heat with a gentle hint of clove and cardamom. Absolutely outstanding.

Service & Pace There’s a sign at the entrance: “This is not fast food. Great taste takes time.” Believe it. Dishes are cooked to order, so expect a leisurely wait. The staff checks in just enough to keep you updated, and once the platters hit the table you’ll agree the patience tax is totally justified.

Pro Tips Go with friends—the mandi platter is made for sharing. Weekends mean live music; arrive a bit early if you want prime floor-seat real estate. Plan for 30–40 minutes from order to first bite; use the time to soak in the music and décor.

Bottom Line Indian Canteen’s mix of Bollywood flair, floor seating, and from-scratch cooking turns dinner into an experience. If you’re craving authentic mandi and a mutton curry that might just ruin you for all others, mark this spot on your Milpitas food map—and don’t forget to bring your patience and...

Absolutely Outstanding! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 This restaurant is an absolute gem for anyone looking for delicious vegetarian food, amazing service, and a fantastic ambiance. From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed by a friendly and accommodating team, even though we arrived lat at night with a large group.

Now, let's talk about the food-everything was incredibly fresh and flavorful! We started with Crispy Corn, Stuffed Mirchi Bajjil(one of the BEST I've ever had!), and Onion Samosa, all perfectly crispy and well-seasoned. The Soya Cashew Biryani stood out with its incredibly fresh and tender soya, while the Gutti Vankaya Biryani was packed with rich, authentic flavors. For breakfast, the Bonda, Vada, and Ghee Karam Idly were a perfect start to the day--especially the Ghee Karam Idly, which was just exceptional! Although I enjoyed the vegetarian dishes, I must mention that this place has a humongous variety of non-vegetarian options as well. My non-vegetarian friends loved everything they tried, with the Mutton Mandi being the clear standout!

Overall, this place goes beyond just great food. The service, the ambiance, and the warm hospitality make it a must-visit. Whether you're looking for top-notch vegetarian cuisine or an extensive non-vegetarian selection, this restaurant has something for everyone. Highly...

A Culinary Gem in California!

Having visited this restaurant over four times, I can confidently say it is the best Indian dining experience in the city. From the moment you step in, you’re greeted with a warm smile and welcomed into a beautifully designed, modern, and inviting atmosphere.

The food is simply extraordinary—authentic, fresh, and perfectly spiced. Each dish is crafted with such precision that you can tell the chef is a true master of their craft. The meats are cooked to perfection, and the balance of spices and textures is impeccable. The quality of the ingredients shines through in every bite, and the modern presentation adds a sophisticated touch.

The service is outstanding—friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. The staff go above and beyond, offering excellent recommendations and taking the time to explain each dish. Their passion for providing an exceptional dining experience is evident.

Whether you’re starting your evening with fabulous starters, savoring the perfectly cooked main courses, or indulging in their delightful desserts, this place guarantees a memorable experience every time. I can’t recommend it enough—definitely...

The restaurant was a bit of a mixed bag. I went there recently for a Sunday lunch with friends. The food was decent, I’d give it a 3.75. The cuisine is primarily South Indian but the flavors could have better. The service was okay, be sure to repeat your order very clearly. We asked for recommendations but the fellow couldn’t quite guide us. I think other wait staff may be new. Some of the food was really hot and other dishes not as flavorful. Their breads were really good. They may do well consulting with a restaurant expert just to dial things in a bit. The atmosphere and ambience was super unique and had “Bandra Cafe” vibes. I found it humorous that in their big TV, they had commercials running of other restaurants, lol. I applaud them for doing their best.

Whenever we go to eat for dine in or to go they always mess up with orders. They never give sambhar with dosas but when you ask they say it will come with it. I had dosa for dine in today and it didn't came with sambhar when I asked the guy there for sambhar he said okay but never came back. We ordered togo as well it took almost an hour to make it. Because they said they got so many dosas orders so they are still working on it. I only had good experience when we first visited them it was after a week or so they opened but after that it's always pathetic service. Food taste is good but service is always pathetic. Here is the picture of the plate there was only chutneys no sambhar at all.
