So first time going was confusing and just kinda annoying.. You walk in to a crowd of people no employees greeting you or letting you know where to go or what to do..
Finally you figure out you have to stand in a line to link your bank card to one of there cards.. then u use that card for everything there.. everything is pretty expensive.. it's high class restaurant prices with food truck quality food..
We tried Martes Tacos first.. So the tacos themselves were actually really good and probably the best thing we got the entire night.. But 6$-8$ per taco is pretty expensive.. considering the are about half the size of a softshell taco from taco bell . Then $2 for a can of pop..
Next we went to Abang Yoli. They had a lot of good reviews.. First off we got a two piece of the Korean chicken it was 13$ ! A 5 piece was $33 with no sides included.. the fries were a extra 5$ . My wife got the chicken satay which is $12 for 3 little skewers of grilled chicken.. All of that would have been ok if it was great food which is sadly wasn't..
The fried chicken is tasteless, nothing different ,no special seasoning .. Nothing "Korean" about it.. Save yourself some money and go-to Popeyes or KFC both honestly have more flavor .. A handful of tiny fries with a few thin cut jalapenos, some garnish and sesame seeds on it. Again nothing different or Asian about them.. Definitely was expecting some type of seasoning or some type of Asian influence on the food and there's zero.
Then finding a spot to sit was a nightmare.. you basically have to hover over people and wait for them to leave .. then hurry up and snag a dirty table no ones cleaned for who knows how long.. Pretty diverse crowd but.. still a lot of hipsters and the place definitely has that type of a hipster vibe.. Parking was free but it's a muddy ,rocky, unpaved mess to...
Read moreStopped in for something to eat and drink while visiting Mpls.-StP for 7 days as an out of town visitor. Drove into town famished after a long daytrip and so it was an excellent time to try Malcom Yards.
Wending your way off the city grid and then locating the place down near train tracks and grain elevators kind of gets your hopes up - and then it's all the more intriguing once you see the repurposed structure.
The food however was big disappointment -in my case a Rachel sandwich so smothered in liquid (was it dressing?) that it instantly became a wet mess. However, the smoked turkey inside was in fact delicious-and I picked it out from soggy bread and left the rest.
Counter staff seemed rushed and uninterested and so maybe that's what accounted for the lackluster sandwich. Or, it may be they were simply tired and ready to go home when we arrived at 830pm...because the place battens down the hatches at 9pm. The cleaners are out in force and you have got to vacate the premises immediatey--and they mean pronto !
Early bird hours were not what I expected at hip Malcom Yards in a hipster zone in Minneapolis near the U. campus- but hey, this is Minnesota after all and it was a preview of things to come.
Throughout our otherwise delightful week in and around the Twin Cities area, we kept missing dinner hour just about everywhere we went. One bartender at a swanky bar also serving light meals told us : "no hot food after 7pm, the kitchen is closed !" He seemed genuinely surprised when I asked-and just a little bit annoyed.
By the end of our week long visit we grew savvier …and knew to head out for dinner by 6pm at latest in order to arrive at destination in time to be able to order dinner. When in Rome do what the Romans do …but when you're used to eating at 8 or 9pm it does take some...
Read moreNeutral review here. Had my first experience here a few weeks ago with some colleagues after work. Good food variation with a lot of different options to choose from that are carefully prepared with presentation in mind. Moderate number of items to enjoy on tap. Atmosphere can be pretty loud and busy so it can be difficult to hear each other.
Definitely can be a bit pricier. 18% automatic gratuity applies for both food and drinks, which seems a bit excessive especially for drinks as I grabbed my own tap and also put away my own glass. (Although it would make sense if you grabbed your drinks at the bar with assistance of a bartender.)
I'd recommend everyone keeping a tab on your bill to make sure everything is correct. I took a picture of my tap balance before I dropped my card in the bin since this process was newer for me. I personally don't like how you have to drop your card into the bin at the end of your visit which delays closing your tab till after you leave. Would prefer to close tab out right when I leave as it makes it difficult to clarify your charges afterwards since it has to happen over email instead.
I had to email about my charges and found out there was an automatic 18% gratuity on my tap which explains the additional 25% surcharge (after tax) of my balance on my tap. The person who replied back to my email also generated me a copy of my receipt to a close estimate (not exact) of what I spent but all the itemized items on tap were incorrect and not a selection I actually made.
Would still consider occasionally coming here again but I think some improvements...
