I lived in this area a few years. This was my go-to Asian night diner spot. This is one of the only things I miss about living in the area. I grew up in SW Houston, next to China Town. I am also a hard-core foodie! Growing up so close to the being able to choose from the most authentic Asian cuisine and having several friends that are Asian, my review of a quality Asian restaurant does not come lightly. This is a complex cuisine, and the 5-flavor complexity is not easy to master.
NY Chinese Cafe has mastered my favorite dishes. General’s chicken is my go-to litmus test of any good Chinese food restaurant. The sauce is complex and not easy to master. NY Chinese Cafe Yen has mastered it indeed. In fact, they have gone above and beyond my standards with their Dragon & Phoenix dish. It’s absolutely A-MAZING! The cost of this café is above the standard, but the delight on my taste buds is also way above the standard. This was the first place I tried the Dragon & Phoenix dish. I was blown away. The spicy, sweet, sour complexity is a symphony on the taste buds.
I eat a Whole 30 diet, so this was my “cheat night” food. But if I was going to splurge to treat myself on my “off” day from my diet, it was always NY Chinese Cafe! I especially loved to treat my family, my nanny & housekeeper to NY Chinese Café when they would come over to help with my baby & cleaning. After a day of hard work and me running errands, this was a nice treat. It was so funny how they would get full on a small portion of this dish and would save the rest. They are very generous portions.
I also love to keep their containers. They are high quality and make great storage containers. I do not run them through the dishwasher but washing them by hand with antibacterial soap is a great way to reuse. They are good for many uses before needing to...
Read moreSo I started coming here back in 2018 so shame on me for just now leaving a review. I LOVE the consistency and kindness of this place. Especially the female owner who usually takes orders at the register. She is always accommodating and when you frequent there enough...she remembers you. Especially since my orders tend to be on the picky side.
Their Spring Rolls/Egg Rolls are so good. Along with the pan friend dumplings (well my kiddos always eats the dumplings), and the beef sticks. I always get chicken and shrimp lo mein and the shrimp are a good size for me. Chicken is tasty and love the sauce. Everything taste fresh what I order.
Now the one drawback is I am NOT a fan of their fried rice. But that lo...
Read moreWent here for lunch last week. Not impressed with the meal at all. I've had NY style Chinese food and dis ain't it, y'all!
Ordered the garlic shrimp from their lunch menu, which came with eggroll, soup and choice of steam or fried rice. Hot and sour soup lacked the tartness. Eggroll was bland and required dipping in a sticky sweet sauce. The shrimp entree was lathered in thick sweet soy sauce which is what's stereotypically served at smaller Chinese restaurants. If I had wanted a sweet sauce dish, I'd have ordered a sweet and sour entree.
Compared to this place's meager portion size, QQ China Cafe down the street blows this place away and is more palatable...
