We visited Nick the Greek for a Mother’s Day dinner, returning to this location for the second time after a great first experience. One of the highlights of that visit was the red harissa sauce—it was so memorable that we made a point to come back, even bringing out-of-state family with us, specifically looking forward to that same spicy kick.
When placing our order with the owner, we asked about the harissa and made it clear it was a big reason for our return. He acknowledged it and assured us he’d provide it with no extra charge. Unfortunately, by the time our food arrived, the owner had left—and somehow, the staff had no idea what we were talking about. One employee who was standing next to the owner during our order clearly would have overheard the conversation, but still claimed ignorance. When we explained the situation, we were met with a shrug and, “Didn’t you hear us say bye to the owner? He just left.” That response felt careless and dismissive, especially given how specific and important our request was.
As we started eating, we found the pita wraps dry without any sauces, and the only condiments available were sriracha and tapatío—neither of which are remotely Greek or what we asked for. We asked again about the harissa, only to be told this time that they did have it, but couldn’t give us much because they were saving it for other meals. The restaurant was empty and closing in an hour, so this excuse made no sense. Worse still, they wanted to charge us $3 for a tiny portion—even though it was complimentary during our last visit, and the owner had promised it this time as well.
We spent nearly $100 for our group of six, and while the food itself was okay, the overall experience left us frustrated, disappointed, and really wasn’t worth our time or money. This was supposed to be a special meal, and instead it felt like we were being dismissed and misled over a simple and reasonable request. The lack of communication, accountability, and basic hospitality really soured the night.
It’s unfortunate, because we genuinely enjoyed our first visit—but after this experience, won’t be returning. It’s not because of a $3 harissa sauce, but just the fact that they think it’s okay to lie at their convenience
Wow, if you're looking for a truly outstanding Greek food experience in Modesto, you absolutely have to check out Nick the Greek! This place is an absolute gem and deserves all the praise. From the moment you walk in, you can feel the positive energy. The staff is so friendly and welcoming, and you can tell they take real pride in serving up delicious, authentic food. The whole vibe is just fantastic—it's fast-casual done right, with a focus on quality and flavor that you can taste in every single bite. Let's talk about the food, because that's where Nick the Greek really shines. The gyros are out of this world! The meat is seasoned perfectly, cooked on that traditional vertical rotisserie, and served in a warm pita that's a work of art in itself. And don't even get me started on the Gyro Bowl—it's a flavor explosion in a bowl, perfect for a hearty and satisfying meal. The ingredients are always so fresh, from the crisp vegetables to the zesty sauces. I highly recommend adding some hummus and olives to your order; they are truly delicious. They don't just stop at amazing gyros and bowls, either. The menu is full of incredible options. The Souvlaki skewers are charbroiled to perfection, and their Greek fries are a must-try. Plus, you have to save room for dessert! The Baklava is a flaky, sweet, and nutty dream, and their Greek frozen yogurt is the perfect way to finish off a perfect meal. The portions are generous, so you definitely get your money's worth, and the service is incredibly fast. Whether you're dining in or ordering for delivery, the quality is consistently top-notch. Honestly, Nick the Greek is more than just a restaurant; it's a culinary experience that will leave you smiling and planning your next visit before you've even finished your meal. It's a new favorite in Modesto, and I couldn't recommend it...
Read moreStopped in looking for something different. We found it at Nick the Greek. Lady at the register was nice and answered all our questions. We tried the beef and lamb gyro plate. The steak protein bowl. Nicks fries and the froyo with baklava and honey. I drank the mandarin cardamom and dragon fruit strawberry drinks they had and both were refreshing and delicious. All plates were hot n fresh. Steak was tender. Rice that is served in all plates we ordered was very tasty. Veggies were crisp. Over all yummy food with lots of flavor. The fries I ordered came hot and fresh with chicken, a spicy sauce and green onions. Although very tasty and would order them again the chicken was overcooked and did not add to the flavor of the plate. I would definitely try fries again but with a different protein. I enjoyed the froyo it was a nice combination. We had stopped in at 8pm and in the time we sat n ate the place filled up and plenty of people came to pick up orders. Clean popular place I wish my family had...
