I really enjoyed my experience here at La Fontaine. The food was delicious, the service was great, and the atmosphere was perfect.
I got the duck dish and it was incredible. It far exceeded my expectations (in general at restaurants, duck is hit or miss: it's usually very good or very bad). There was a good portion of food such that I was the perfect amount of full after eating the entire plate.
The service was great, very in line with the French style. This can be a little off-putting for Americans who are used to frequently being asked (interrupted) by the server who is checking in. While that style works for me most of the time, it was nice to not feel pestered or like we were being forced out the door. Even though we are around peak dinner time, we enjoyed the luxury of a long uninterrupted conversation - the server only came to ask if we wanted dessert when we signaled to him. That's not to say they were neglectful; any time either of our water glasses were low, someone would come by and unobtrusively refill the glasses. Between this and the clear attentiveness of the servers, we never felt strained to catch anyone's attention if we needed something.
Price-wise, it was a bit more on the expensive side compared to it's neighboring restaurants of similar caliber, however the prices were fairly in line with other French restaurants. In my mind, it's a great place to go to when you want to treat yourself to a higher end eating experience. I, myself, will keep it in mind for special occasions, but probably won't go on...
Read moreChose this place for our Valentine’s Day lunch. The restaurant is located in the downtown so parking is scarce and have to walk 10-15 min depending on where you parked. The restaurant looks small from outside but it has lot of seating space and since we went on a weekday only 3-4 tables were occupied.
Started our lunch with Cream of Mushroom soup which was really good esp in this cold and rainy weather. They provided a basket of bread with a herb oil for side. Ordered L-Fromage De Chevre Aux Pistaches for starter, Grilled salmon for entree, La Fontaine pizza, Panna cotta & Lava cake for dessert. The started was really good. It had the pistachio crunchiness and the slight sweetness from the caramelised onion and honey. I was not much impressed with the grilled salmon. The quantity seemed less for the price and it came with veggies and mashed potato. The pizza had the thinnest crust I ever had with the right amt of tomato sauce and little topping. They were cut into 9 pieces and we took most of them home. The highlight was the dessert. The lava cake was yummy and came with sea sat caramel ice cream which just complimented the cake and carried it to the next level. The panna cotta comes with a berry sauce which we asked them to skip for us. The texture was so good and the right flavor.
Overall a good date place, friendly staff, adequate seating, just above average pricing and...
Read moreIndoor/ outdoor (partly enclosed for warmth) space very well laid out. French cuisine without the traditional heavy sauces. Enough seasoning to enhance but not overwhelm. Overall the dining experience was a pleasure.
Mushroom cream soup had lovely full mushroom flavor & mouth feel: not heavily creamed. Beet arugula salad was crisp & fresh (after requesting balsamic + oil to moisten). Smoked salmon resoto incorporated sundried tomatoes & broccoli, and offered a subtle, well rounded taste experience. Duck breast in cranberry sauce w wild rice was another winner; the skin was charred and peppered. The cranberry sauce was great, but a bit more savory and pepper would have gone a long way to rounding out the flavor. Duck itself was exactly done: the main part (except the end bit which was too well done) tender and juicy. I did not eat the skin as it had a layer of fat (it's an American duck folks) attached - fed it to our dog, who really appreciated it 🙂 Dessert of lava cake & chocolate gelato delivered full-on chocolate without being too sweet. Perfect.
Service was friendly, but waitress forgot to ask the manager to turn on the heat lamp as requested until late in our meal. We appreciated the spirited conversation between her and our next table re Turkey (where...
