The restaurant itself was colorful and unique. It was a relaxed yet upbeat atmosphere. However, if you like a restaurant to be clean and tidy, this is not the place for you at all. There is coloring (with actual crayons) everywhere on the outside. You can sit outside on picnic tables, that will bother your knees, if you have knee problems. If you are tall, don’t sit at the picnic tables, your knees will be at chest level.
Our waitress was very attentive and offered suggestions. She was at the table right after we were seated to take our drink order. When she got back with our drinks she took our appetizer order and we ordered our dinner as well. We ordered onion rings and cheese pops (in Wisconsin we call them cheese curds).
The onion rings were not as expected. They were also not what we’re used to. The onions were cut thick and when fried they didn’t get tender. The outer breading was nice and crunchy. The onion rings are very large and are served with a beer-based sauce. We didn’t care for them, only because we don’t like thick onion rings. The cheese curds were ok. The seasoning was kind of bland though.
My husband had a bacon cheeseburger platter with fries. He ordered it with provolone cheese, no tomatoes, or pickles. His platter was cold when he got it. He said it was like it was an oops order that they put provolone on and served to him. He also said that the burger was flavorless. He wasn’t impressed.
Our two oldest ordered a cheeseburger platter with American cheese and fries and a cheeseburger platter with cheddar cheese and fries. They both said that the cheeseburger was ok, not very flavorful. The fries were your average fries, not crunchy, but fried to their liking. They didn’t season the fries so they needed salt and ketchup.
One of our little ones ordered cheese fries and the other one ordered a crispy chicken sandwich platter with only lettuce and mayonnaise and fries. Our second to youngest said that the cheese fries were really good. They were cheesy and served with ranch and came in a small tray. The chicken sandwich was very crispy and flavorful. The chicken was still juicy and didn’t dry out as it sometimes will when fried. My husband wanted to try some because he was upset that his wasn’t good. He said he wished he had ordered the crispy chicken sandwich platter instead of the bacon cheeseburger.
I ordered the cheese fries with Texas chili. The fries were served in a small try, were covered in chili and cheese, but the flavor wasn’t there. The Texas chili wasn’t authentic, not spicy and bland. I was hoping for a more authentic Texas chili with a little more zing.
To summarize our experience at River City Cafe, the atmosphere was unique, and the staff was friendly. We were treated well and the waitress offered suggestions when we were indecisive. The price was fair, but the food was just ok. A big downfall is that they do not offer a kid’s menu. I wish I would have checked on that before we chose to eat there. I hate paying adult prices for food the little ones will only...
Read moreWent here on Wednesday September 25th 2024 with my family as part of our South Carolina Vacation. We needed a bite to eat before heading to the nearby alabama theatre to see the show there. We decided on here because they have a patio by the water. We were greeted and immediately taken to a table. We wanted to sit by the water, and the host sat us near the water and sort of near people. luckily we were able to move and have a server know where we are. We sat down, table was a bit, dirty as it had lettuce spilled on the bench of the table, but i took a napkin and cleaned it. Our server came, and was very nice. He made sure to check on us, and make us happy. He even refilled my dr. pepper without me asking! We got 4 waters, i got a dr. pepper, and a peer punch. They also have cocktails like mixed drinks and margeritas. So the menu is much of burgers, sandwiches and a few salads. It sort of reminded me of a Red Robin because they had plenty of speciality burgers. For appetizers, we got boneless bbq wings no sauce, the bbq on the side, and fried zucchini. The Fried Zucchini i very much enjoyed, as well as the wings. For entrees, I got the Nacho Burger with sweet potato fries and coleslaw, my dad got the philly burger with onion rings and coleslaw, my mom got the bacon crunch burger with fries and coleslaw, and my aunt got a regular burger with fries and coleslaw, and she also had my coleslaw as i didn't like it. I'm like that with any coleslaw though. I thought the Nacho Burger turned out delicious and was very enjoyable, and stuffed with chips. My dad wasn't a big fan of his, but ate it all, as did the others. Check came in a timely manner, paid via credit card and left a cash tip. Also outside didn't have any peanuts on the floor. just an FYI. Hope to be back...
Read moreIt's very unlikely that we'll come back again (at least to this location). This is our first time visiting this location since 2018 and we finally made it at a time (early afternoon, around 2 pm) when it wasn't a wait to get seated. Same atmosphere as we remembered it, but it seemed dirtier to me. I think this is most likely due to my increased sensitivity to cleanliness due to the COVID pandemic. We had a very pleasant, albeit aloof server (Deanna), who came to our table and took our drink orders. After she brought our drinks to the table, she disappeared for about 15 minutes before coming back and finally taking our orders. She also forgot to leave us with peanuts to tie us over while she was away. As far as food, we ordered the bone-in wings with hot wing sauce. The wing sauce was very good, but the skin of the chicken wings wasn't crispy in the slightest. Honestly, I should have taken them back to the kitchen to have them refried. We all enjoyed the cheese pops appetizer. I ordered the peanut butter burger (sub'd with turkey patty), my wife ordered the ranch burger (also sub'd with turkey patty), and my daughter ordered the bacon cheeseburger. My daughter really enjoyed the bacon cheeseburger. My wife thought her ranch burger was ok. Nothing to write home about. My peanut butter bacon burger was a big disappointment. This was my first time trying a peanut butter burger and I wish my first experience would have been elsewhere. The burger was unimaginative, as the burger had bacon and peanut butter on it. The peanut butter was plain & as the burger began to cool, it became thick and clumpy. The peanut butter wasn't sweet, so I didn't get to experience the mix of sweet and savory that I was expecting. Overall, a fairly disappointing...
