Last year we came down with the family to try to get some ice cream- this being the closest spot to our family beach house, and the parking lot was so full we couldn’t get in to park. Made a point to come back this year, as the kids were all disappointed that we never got the ice cream from this place. This past Thursday, I stopped by at 2:05pm with my nephew as a preview treat before bringing the other 8 family members later when they returned from a fishing trip. We show up, and there are a couple people getting ice cream. We stood there at the window a couple minutes but the other customers sitting eating fresh ice cream said they were closed until maybe 3:00; apparently the workers never showed up for work. Then they said supposedly some of the workers said they’d be here in 20 minutes, but it’s already been 40 minutes. With this information I had some hope some kids would show up to serve my 5 y.o. nephew the ice cream he wanted so bad, so I agreed to wait a bit longer. After at least 20-25 minutes, a lady came out to say they were closed and her help didn’t show up. I told her we were willing to wait a few more minutes- my nephew had his heart set on it. She asked us what we wanted and got it for us quickly. We were very thankful. As we finished our ice cream 30 minutes later, 4 kids came up with bad attitudes (one kid had to literally push one in the door to work, like he was having a temper tantrum). Tonight we brought the rest of the family, because we saw there was no line. Walked up to the window right at closing time, but they were still serving so we ran up. A young girl came and served two groups and did not acknowledge us all at the window. Several minutes later, a young teen boy with long shaggy blonde hair comes to the window and says “can i help you?”, so I started to order the kids’ ice cream, and he abruptly announces mid-order “WE’RE CLOSED!” and slammed the window ‘closed’ so hard it bounced back open. So, he waited to “be closed” to acknowledge us- and then let’s me order before stating they were closed? HORRIBLY RUDE, entitled little kids working here. I almost wanted to say these kids were going to ruin this business, but after seeing how many other reviews seem to have had similar situations- this a management issue, all day. Learn how to manage your staff- maybe try training your staff. Your shop is in the position to FLOURISH if you could learn to be professional and courteous. So many people were turned away on Thursday in the middle of the afternoon because ALL the employees refused to show up, I watched at least 12 people come and leave while we waited. Have some pride in your place. And those lazy kids/employees need to learn real work ethic. Pathetic. Will never waste my time here again, we will drive right past it to go get ice cream...
Read moreWe arrived at Fatboyz and stood in line at 9:38 and got to the order window at 9:52. The employees (all teenagers) refused to come to the window to take our order because it was close to their closing time (10pm). I asked one employee if they were done taking orders and his response was “I don’t know how to work the register!” That didn’t even answer my question. At 10:04 I was finally able to wave over the girl that has been taking orders at the window and asked her if they were done taking orders, and with an attitude she said “We told a group in line we were not taking orders after them and asked them to tell others.” It is NOT a customers responsibility to tell people that show up after them that the business is no longer taking orders. The family that said that said they were told that before 9:30.
Another customer waiting in line asked another girl that was working the pick-up window if they were no longer taking orders and her response was “I don’t know, I don’t work here. I just came in to help a friend.” She was working a soft serve machine and handing orders out of the pick up window to customers and wasn’t wearing any food service nitrile gloves like some of the other employees were wearing. I’m pretty sure this would affect their sanitation grade that they legally have to post here in NC. I guess they should prepare for a specialized inspection for violation of food service laws NC has in place.
Owners need to make sure their employees are comfortable handling large crowds of people. They were clearly afraid to communicate to their customers which is why they asked customers standing in line to communicate things to other customers and avoided the order window until it was after their closing time. You don’t turn away customers before your closing time just because you want to end your night early. They ignored over 20 people that were standing in line for over 20 minutes.
I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone that has any concerns of food safety as they clearly don’t follow those laws. I also wouldn’t recommend showing up after 9:30pm because they clearly want to be done with their night as soon as they can after their advertised closing...
Read moreThe posted hours are until 11pm on Google, but when we visited they closed at 9pm which was posted on their billboard out front which is visible from the road. I appreciated that because we encountered SO many places that closed at 8-9pm when their posted hours online stated otherwise. So be aware of that!
We didn't try the actual food here - though the sweet girl behind the counter offered us some free fries that were leftover from the previous order I'm assuming. That was nice but we declined as we had just eaten dinner.
I ordered a sundae with coffee ice cream, hot fudge, extra hot fudge and wet walnuts. It also came with whipped cream and a cherry. It was fantastic! Sooooo good seriously! My husband got Rocky Road ice cream with hot fudge and he loved his as well. We also noticed they sold chocolate covered bacon among other goodies. We had to try it and OMG....it was amazing!!!
On the way home to Raleigh we stopped back by to get a couple of pieces of chocolate covered bacon and a chocolate covered banana for our kids. Also grabbed a chocolate covered cookie dough pop. Unfortunately the bananas turned to mush in the 3 hour car ride (we tried to keep them cool and shielded from the sun). The bacon and cookie dough made it just fine!
We will definitely be back - this place was like 1/2 mile from the condo we stayed at and I wish we had found it sooner during our weeklong stay because I probably would have eaten dessert there nightly lol. Okay maybe it's a good thing I didn't discover it until the last night of our stay! Will definitely be back again and again and would highly recommend this place! They also have a nice shady outdoor seating area and clean bathrooms. I'll have to try the...
