This was our first time trying out this restaurant, and we ended up leaving after waiting over an hour to get a glass of water.
We had reservations for 7:30 and arrived on time, but was notified that they were running 10 mins behind (and we understood). We were asked to sit outside until our table was ready, and that they would get us a cocktail to enjoy while we waited. We ended up sitting outside for over 20 mins before someone came over to take our drink order. After 25-30 mins of waiting we were finally seated, albeit with no cocktails or waters. It then took another 10-15 minutes for someone to come to our table, take our order, and bring the cocktails that we ordered when we were outside. Even then, we still couldn’t seem to get any water, regardless of them being able to make entire cocktails.
After a quick observation, we noticed that all of the tables around us were also waiting on food and drinks. After almost 1 hour of waiting for even a cup of water, we decided that we would like to go eat elsewhere. I politely asked the individual who took our orders (possibly the hostess) if we could cancel our food orders and that we would just pay for our drinks. Her immediate response was “They already made it”. This clearly was not the case considering the fact that several other tables nearby us did not yet have their meals, and they had been seated before we checked in at 7:30. After telling us it was too late to cancel, we said “it’s okay, we’ll wait and eat here then”. She then stormed into the kitchen and then to the computer. She returned back to our table, slamming down our receipt for our cocktails and stated in an extremely rude tone “I gave your food to the dishwashers. Here you go”. She then proceeded to storm off while loudly saying “They’re leaving!” to her staff nearby while other customers watched, making a scene. This made us feel extremely embarrassed, like we had done something wrong. We could not believe how we were just treated. I felt extremely upset and decided to walk outside in order to remove myself from the situation. The rest of our party felt the same way, but someone had to wait in order to pay the drink tab.
While trying to pay the tab to leave, the manager approached them and asked them what had happened. After explaining, he apologized and was very polite about the situation. Unfortunately, it came too late as we were already leaving. Her attitude was extremely rude and uncalled for. We are understanding to a restaurant being busy, but being ignored for 40 minutes and being treated with horrible service is unacceptable. As long as that individual is still working there, we will not...
Read moreCOMPLETELY DISAPPOINTED, OVERPRICED FOR THE POOR FOOD QUALITY AND QUANTITY. Am wondering if we had a fill-in kitchen staff when we were there as some reviewers seemed to have much different results than we had. Our problems for our table of 4: Fried eggs appetizer was truly nasty. Slimy egg halves and mashed yolks (trying to be deviled eggs), absolutely no seasoning and fried in some icky hard green shell that fell off soon as they were touched. Terrible taste, too. Sweetbreads appetizer: just really awful, nothing more to say, not eaten Boulliabaisse entree: My order, $32. Came in a tiny bowl with 2 mussels, 2 small tough pieces of lobster (clearly not fresh) and some unidentifiable white fish. Hardly an entree and the sauce was watery. Steak Frites: my husband and son ordered. My husband's order came lukewarm, french fries were hard and tasteless, really seemed like they had just been heated up from the lunch offerings. Petrale Sole: lacked seasoning, bland and uninviting. For $30. Desserts: Profiteroles were OK but tiny. My husband's berry tart was hard as a rock, think it had been sitting in a fridge for days. Not eaten. Wines: My husband had the most expensive cab and I had the most expensive chardonnay on the list. Very pedestrian, not what you would call fine wine in the wine country! A woman who appeared to be perhaps the restaurant mgr or the owner (?) cruised by our table toward the end and asked how everything was. I told her about the absolutely awful fried egg appetizer...she just smiled and said "thanks for the feedback." And I didn't even tell her about the rest of our meal disappointments. A high class restaurant would have removed the charge for the fried eggs appetizers, but not here, just "thanks for the feedback." Also interesting that the server noticed that the sweetbreads appetizer wasn't eaten, but when he cleared the plate, didn't even bother to ask if there had been a problem with the dish. Typically, I good server will inquire if everything was OK. (Yes, my husband could have spoken up, but we were hosting our 2 guests who were "experiencing" their first time in Napa, and since it was an appetizer, he believed things might look up for the rest of the meal, and we didn't want to create a fuss in front of our guests.) There are so many other nice restaurants to try in Napa, Yountville, St. Helena. My advice, stay away from this one. Our tab, with tip, was well over $400 (!) for a truly...
Read moreUpdate: 5/10/22 This review popped up today in my email from a year ago. I thought I'd add that the restaurant management never reached out to me or acknowledged the review. We have not returned to Angele since a year ago.
Today my family and I had lunch at Angele. We had a reservation and it was my birthday. Previous, pre-pandemic celebratory meals were enjoyable and satisfying. This one was very disappointing and very expensive ($200 without tip) for its value. We shared the beet salad and one other salad (2 small lettuce heads with shaved radishes and a vinaigrette) our adult daughter chose. Those were fine. She had Cavatelli pasta with spring peas and shaved parmesian cheese (no meat) but it had a long hair worming through the pasta. We returned it. The manager apologized but didn't offer to comp it or something else on our order. She didn't eat much of the replacement pasta dish, which was bland and lackluster, because the hair had disgusted her and ruined the meal. My husband had a burger with fries and Pliny Elder but the burger was one third eaten. He usually eats everything. The fries were crisp, well seasoned and tasty. I had a Croque Monsier and two glasses of wine. My sandwhich entree (bread, Parisian ham and cheese) was tough, rubbery to cut and not very tasty. Not much cheese sauce. It seemed it had been left warming too long, yet it was cold. I didn't finish it. I noticed the next table over had a similar experience with their Croque Monsiers. They had also cut off the crust and most of the bread which was pushed to the side of their plates. My family declined dessert but I had an apple tart with pecan ice cream on the side. It was nondescript. The pastry rubbery, not flakey, and soggy on the bottom. The apples were mushy. After small exploratory bites, I didn't finish it. The manager didn't return to check on us or ask how our meals were. However, the young waiter was working very hard. He informed us he'd been working there for two weeks. He's the reason my daughter said give 3 stars instead of 2. We won't return anytime soon. Unfortunate because we have had many more enjoyable meals there and the atmosphere is nice with an outdoor patio near the river. We were still hungry when we left and...
