I wasn’t sure about where to eat since I had a string of horrible to weird experiences, this was a leap of faith: a recommendation from my concierge and a confirmation from a dog walker near the restaurant on the way there. My host was wonderfully patient explaining the dish I wanted to order, salmon done in the true Veracruz style - served with ever so slightly piquant lite tomato sauce. I was “hooked” … her words made it sound so delish. Really. (Forget that earlier in the day I had a tremendous bagel & lox + schmear in Montauk by the fabulous Goldberg’s of Easthampton) Veracruz was calling. I have visited almost every single major pyramid in Mexico - thanks to my adventurous, art savvy girlfriend at the time, Daniela, from Argentina - but we had to choose between Veracruz and Monte Alban, and we chose the former. Today, I didn’t want to waste time: Quickly came water, menu, kfs in a pencil-skirt tight napkin… I was hiding my face from other patrons (a couple having a row near me) thinking if someone spots me and has a personal opinion they want to make, my food is going arrive in a subpar state. It wasn’t, thank heaven!
The salad had a mixture of light and power greens, snap peas and jicama highlighted by an avocado dressing that was the perfect tonic for weary tastebuds. I wolfed it down as slowly as I could resetting, no, reliving the salad experience, between the sips of cool water Mr. Raul poured. A perfect set up. Surrounded by tequila bottles in a woodsy floor to ceiling windowed room with beautiful people everywhere: Ghana to Copenhagen, Tokyo to Ecuador. Mr. Raul, is from Ecuador. The responsibly sourced fish was a perfect choice and arrived precisely the time he said it would. Like the salad, I dove in, forgiving myself for saying Grace while chewing. I believe He understood because this meal (and the one this morning) were blessings. Asked and answered the fish was so delicious and cooked exactly right. The sauce, which appeared “creamy” isn’t and was balanced - not acidic. Ripe, warmed cherry tomatoes festooned a dish crowned by crispy salmon so good, I was tempted to photograph it. Just go. If fish isn’t your thing, try Mr. Raul’s idea - the NY strip. A full menu of tapas, tequilas are waiting too. So is the lovely hostess, (next time her name) and Mr Raul, who is so kind to offer tastes of the resto’s namesake to anyone who asks. I didn’t partake but he did waste a tablespoon of top self tequila just to show me what it smelled like. Unbelievably Mr. Raul won the bet, this one smelled like chicken! Uh, maybe next life. Chicken Tequila aside, check this place out. Its the United Nations on holiday with tequila and tapas a cool vibe and at least a...
Read moreHorrible, Horrible, Horrible service ! After today’s experience I am convinced that the entire staff doesn’t care about the guest experience! We had a 17th birthday luncheon there at 4pm on 8.21 for 7 ppl. We brought a cake and spoke to the staff about the cake and let then know it was a surprise for the Birthday guest. 1. We all put in our order at the same time , we noticed the waitress looking away from us while we ordered. Before she left the table I asked if she had everyones order , she replied “yes”! When the food came out she forgot to enter one of the guest orders. She offered no apology, and said her food will be out fast Don’t worry!! the food came out 25 minutes later. 2.) I let the manager know, the manager was a male (heavy build) , and he offered no apology at all. He said, don’t worry, the food be out fast, and simply walked away. The waitress never came back to check on our table to see if we needed anything or to even see how our meal was going. We had to flag her down every single time we needed something. 3.) when the Buser came to clear our table after we had consumed our meal, he says “don’t you guys have a birthday cake coming up” right in front of the Birthday guest. So now, to top everything off, the birthday surprise was ruined. I then went to the host to ask her if she let everyone know that the birthday cake reveal was a surprise, and she said that let the entire staff knew. Once again, nothing was done and no apologies were made, Anejo simply does not care about the guest experience.
To the manager’s response below : Once again, the manager has responded below and is lying !!! We had the same waitress throughout the entire time ! No one was rude and agressive, the unprofessional is using that term and n a derogatory way in regards to us being poc! Not one of us was rude, we even tipped despite the rude service ! When the manager came to the table he did not apologize and didn’t offer any solution at all. No one spoke over him. Furthermore for the manager to get on here and lie really says alot. This is the service at Anjeo is terrible , the manager doesn’t hold himself or the staff accountable! How dare he get on here...
Read moreCame here for lunch with some friends who were visiting from out of town. We found it as it was the highest rated Mexican food in the area around the museum we were going to. When we went (around 2pm on a saturday) they were still serving brunch. The restaurant was incredibly loud and crowded, we were told there would be a 20 minute wait to sit inside but that we could be seated right away in the outside shelter. We decided to do that which we found much nicer anyway since it was much more quiet. It was a chilly and windy day but there were heaters so we were comfortable. However the wind did cause the structure to make some loud and concerning noises on occasion. But we survived so it’s whatever. We ordered guacamole and corn dumplings to start along with a plain and firing squad margaritas, for our meals I had the small order of pork carnitas tacos and my friends both had small orders of the chicken tacos. They were unfortunately out of the bacon habanero guac which we were very much looking forward to so we settled on plain instead. It was very good and tasted incredibly fresh! The chips it came with seemed homemade and were very nice. We actually had to ask for more chips as we ran out relatively quick. The drinks were nice but nothing too special. The corn dumplings were interesting. They were a nice sized portion but I felt the sauce they came in was a little too marinara-like. The tacos were good though a little messy. The service was fairly good. Our server was very nice and gave us some honest opinions on the food that was much appreciated. She also asked after taking our orders if anyone had a food allergy (which someone did). This was a just a little thing that was nice to do and made us feel better. However it did take awhile for her to come over and take our order and awhile for the food to actually come out. Overall, Añejo was good, but nothing was really stand out great. They have a bottomless brunch that actually seemed like a great deal but we unfortunately didn’t do that and we found that prices were a bit high for the level of food. That being said, SoHo can be expensive in general so perhaps we just aren’t caught up to...
