Ever since I had a first date here about two years ago, I've been coming back more times than I can count. The fear of frequenting a busy neighborhood spot like Gotan is running into certain people... like first dates that didn't work out. Luckily the person I was seeing lives pretty far from here so the risk, I calculated, was low. But even so, it was a risk I was willing to take given how much Gotan blew me away that first visit.
The coffee is perfection, and the food is why you want to keep coming back. The menu is healthy for the most part, and I haven't had anything that wasn't 100% delicious. That says something for someone who's been ordering from here so often. Even with something as basic as an avocado toast, Gotan manages to elevate it to a level that leaves you craving their particular rendition (thick, hearty slice of multigrain, with generous portion of avocado, drizzle of olive oil, grape tomatoes, and microgreens). Other notable items include the Scrambled Cheddar Biscuit (hot sauce FTW), Shakshuka (used to only be a weekend thing, but it became so popular I believe they started offering it on weekdays too), Tuna Avocado Poached Egg, and Fattoush salad. I have not tried any of the sandwiches yet.
A word of warning about the crowd. Yes, on a normal weekend it's usually a crowd. Like you'll find yourself hovering like a hawk over people's tables waiting for a spot to open up. That said, if you come before noon you have a good chance of finding a comfortable spot. There are also a lot of different types of seats (high bar, communal table, one booth), which is kind of nice. The sort of people that come here regularly tend to be the ones that bring their laptops, their athletic...
Read moreMy experience at Gothan was extremely disappointing. Not only were the tables dirty and the service slow, but the employees were incredibly rude. To make matters worse, when I brought my service animal with me, we were discriminated against and treated unfairly. It is unacceptable for any establishment to mistreat customers in this way. I would strongly advise against dining at Gothan if you value respectful and welcoming service.
Edited / Response to Business Owner: I am writing to address the unacceptable treatment I received at your restaurant recently. First and foremost, I want to clarify that I arrived with only one small service animal, despite your false claims of multiple dogs being present.
Secondly, I was appalled by the rude statement made by your staff, to which I did not respond. As a business owner, you should be open to receiving feedback, even if it is negative. It is crucial for the success of your establishment that you handle criticism professionally and respectfully.
Furthermore, it is evident that your lack of training in customer relations is concerning. Responding rudely to negative reviews is not only unprofessional but also detrimental to the reputation of your business. If you continue down this path, your business is at risk of failure. Good luck in your...
Read moreI have been coming here for five years. Every single time, I question why I come back. The food and the atmosphere are great. But there has never been a single day where I have had internet service greater than 1 MBPS. I have always told the manager that it could be improved to help them out, and for 5 years now they have been lying and saying that they will fix it. But that has never happened. Every excuse in the book has been made up from the concrete walls are too thick to...it's not us it's spectrum. I highly doubt that they can't place a router upstairs, or that the fastest internet service provider in New York can't get them more than 1 MBPS.
If you intend to provide for internet so that people don't come here for that, don't provide it at all. otherwise people come here and buy coffee and food, only to sit down and be hugely disappointed but how poor it is.
I walked 15 blocks today to give it one more shot. I won't walk one more...
