I order a couple of things on my second visit to Alimama.
Brulee Mochi Donut This is probably my favorite thing from Alimama. The mochi donut itself is a very unique texture as it is made from rice flour so the donut is chewy. This particular flavor is covered in a hard sugar coat and dusted with gold dust. I love the chewy texture and that despite being covered in sugar, isn't exactly super sweet. Alimama does a really good job balancing the actual donut with the sweet topping so as not to overwhelm your taste buds.
Vietnamese Coffee Boba Cream Puff/Brown Sugar Boba Cream Puff I really like both flavors, but honestly found the boba in the Vietnamese Coffee to be unnecessary. I can understand its probably there for aesthetic purposes but the extremely dark flavor of the coffee kind of overpowers any other flavors/textures of that particular flavor. I preferred the Brown Sugar Boba Cream Puff. The boba definitely makes more sense and the cream is well-balanced. Usually these aesthetic dessert places kind of drop the ball on the actual product itself but Alimama does a really good job on balancing the flavors.
Lychee Rose While it didn't taste bad, I also didn't think it was worth the $6.50 I paid. To describe the taste, it's mostly just lychee juice (think canned lychee liquid), watered down with that blue tea that just tastes like water. While very pretty, not that great of a drink. I'd probably keep the money to buy another drink.
Overall, the desserts are really good and worth revisiting for but I don't know if I'd buy the drinks again considering the nearby competitors such as Gongcha, Tiger Sugar, YiFang, etc. I would have given 5 stars but the drink was so lack-luster that I had to...
Read moreToday was our first time here and I definitely don’t regret coming, can’t wait to come back!
What I liked about this place is that is not just that everything is beautiful here but it’s also delicious AND good prices! I feel that there’s a ton of “instagramable” food/dessert places that are terrible in terms of flavor that are also overpriced. But here they have the three GOOD design, prices and flavor!
This is what we had and recommend trying: • Taro munchkins, 8 pieces of warm mochi dough, soft on inside and somehow lil crunchy on outside, the fine dusty coat of the outside is super light and delicious too. • Cereal mochi doughnut, 1 piece, with milk glaze and cereal flakes on top, the dough is also super soft and chewy. The flavor of this doughnut is LITERALLY like eating cereal like the milk having the flavor of the cereal. • Brown sugar boba cream puff, 1 piece, is a choux pastry with a airy creamy filling and soft bobas. The choux is super well made and the bobas aren’t hard to chew like in other places these were on point. • Passion fruit green tea with mini bobas instead of the aiyu jelly, the flavor of the tea was super well balanced with the passion fruit juice. The sweetness was just right as we ordered (they give you the option to make it sweeter, just right or unsweetened).
Everything was around $20 in total which is good because we had 3 different pastries + a drink.
I’ll definitely come back and don’t hesitate to try this beautiful and...
Read moreAlimama Tea is an obscure place that locates behind the hustle and bustle streets of Chinatown in Manhattan. It is a small shop and only takes to-go orders. I stumbled upon this shop on the way to the Wong Dai Sin Temple and it was an unexpected visit. I’ve seen a few raving reviews online about this place, so I decided to take a chance to buy some of the pastries. They are not big in size so you may have a couple of them in one sitting without feeling bloated.
Despite all the positive reviews about its cream puffs, I felt somewhat of a letdown. The cream filling was not soft and fluffy, while the outer shell was kind of flat and not bouncy. They are definitely not the best in town as some might have claimed. In a moment of fear of missing out, I bought too many (since I don’t live in the area), which I regretted as I should have just bought one or two to try first. The only thing that I liked was the Onyx Mochi Donut…
Onyx Mochi Donut: a bit too sweet but rich in sesame flavor. I like its chewy texture (the best pick from my entire purchase).
Vietnamese Coffee Boba Cream Puff: Highly overpowering coffee flavor (too strong that made me feel lightheaded, definitely not a fan of it).
Yuzu Cream Puff: Taste was alright. Not too impressed with it either.
Matcha Cream Puff: Not much matcha flavor.
Ube Cream Puff: The best flavor cream puff...
