Late Wednesday night in Williamsburg, I've just moved to the neighborhood and am wandering Grand Street at 1 AM looking to find, of all things, some yogurt. I hit two bodega-type places, one of which was about to close, and employees at both gave no indication that they had ever even heard of yogurt.
I vaguely remembered Bagelsmith, since I pass in on my way to the L train. I was completely surprised to find it open, and was greeted warmly by guys behind the counter. There I found yogurt, in several different forms and flavors, and a whole lot more.
I asked an employee what time they closed, and he explained that they are open 24 hours a day. He said their full menu was always available, and suddenly moving to Williamsburg seemed a whole lot better. They had about six homemade soups, sandwiches made to order, and all sorts of other things I was surprised to find at 1 AM. The place was bright, clean, and friendly.
After leaving, I managed to drop one of the yogurt parfaits I had purchased about a block down Lorimer. I went back to repurchase another, and the guy at the counter told me to just take one, no charge. I'm like, "who trained these guys, Trader Joe's?" Way impressive.
It's good to know that there's a place to hit up at all hours, where the atmosphere is friendly and the offerings extensive. I will be back many times in the future....
Read moreUsed to come here often. Probably won't come again soon, if ever. Took home 2 breakfast sandwhiches this morning, and found hair (looked like eyelashes) in both of them. My girlfriend spotted hers immediately upon opening and didn't eat it. She was grossed out, but I attempted to eat mine, until I also found a hair on the second half of the sandwich. I called and they apologized and said I could get full refund.
When I came in to return a few hours later, the person I spoke to on the phone was not in. Some of the staff was apologetic, but the person issuing me the refund argued with me and said I had eaten almost all of one of the sandwhiches. This is partially true. I ate it up until the point when I found the hair, about 55% of the way through (see pic). I didn't care to argue with him. I just said please give me my refund, but he only partially refunded me. Lol.
I am am disappointed that this happened because this was a good spot for all hours. I also understand that managing hair can be tricky in a kitchen, but there is no excuse for serving food with hair in it and definitely no excuse for challenging a customer over $1.36 (my bill was $10.36, he gave me $9).
I hope he tells his boss how well he did today in saving the business $1.36 in exchange for losing the trust of 2 long term...
Read moreI'm not sure why people are raining on Bagelsmith's parade. My experience here was nothing but wonderful.
My office is close by and I was Yelping to see who has good tuna sandwiches. After a lengthy search I decided to try Bagelsmith even though they have a crappy star rating. (Hence you can never really know unless you actually read why people are giving them less stars).
So I walked in and was greeted by a very nice gentleman who took my order. I agree with some others that the ordering system is a little misplaced and could definitely use upgrading but that maybe loses them a star. I ordered a tuna sandwich on a plain toasted bagel and an iced coffee.
From placing the order to finish was probably less than 6 minutes and there were a number of people in front of me. That's pretty impressive. The iced coffee was actually really good and I plan to use them as my morning coffee stop.
The bagel was great. The sandwich was loaded with tuna and veggies. They definitely were not meager and are stocked with plenty of bagels at all times.
I'm really glad I found this place and can't wait to try some of their...
